National News Boris Johnson - Ousted Former PM

I think people who blindly and uncritically support one party or another come hell or high water have let their critical facilities atrophy to a dangerous degree.

Amen to that!

I don't see how the 1922 Committee can call them "u-turns" when we've been told they aren't on here....

Position change, the Government would get pilloried if they didn`t & then moaned at when they do.
:) :)

It holds the middle ground but doesn`t appeal to more extreme views.
Better to acknowledge mistakes and do something than charging on regardless and being called dictatorial is it not?
Can`t have it both ways can you?

Can`t see why they worry about Labour "closing the gap" as there won`t be an election for a good while, and if they can`t close the gap during the current :poop: storm they have no chance.

The 1922 Committee (ie. the heart of the Tory Parliamentary Party) don't agree with you.

And? No political party, or part thereof, is always 100% "right".
Its a percentage game, 85% of the time the Conservative view matches mine... the rest you have to cast aside to "politics".
Sometimes Labour`s policies or ideas are agreeable but its fair odds that 80% + they don`t.

Irrespective of the individuals perspective sometimes you have to "suck up" the other stuff.

Eh, I'm talking about "u-turns" not your political views.

They happen, some small some big.
Would you rather zero flexibility & a dictatorial approach?
If you make enough decisions the odds are some will be wrong, change them. Life goes on.

1922 Committee fires warning shot, top table either listens and acts or suffers the consequences.

Its politics..

They don't normally happen on a weekly basis with most Govts I've lived under.

Ah, so indecision and flip-flopping day to day because the decisions you *have* made are poor is 'flexibility'. Good to know...

Yep. Nothing wrong with it, folk make an informed choice that can sometimes be wrong.
EG: Exam algorithm..... prior to the realisation that the weighting may unduly influence the outcome it was hunky-dory, then the penny started to drop in Scotland and you then end up in a very short time frame with only one alternative.
Unpredictable times lead to unpredictable solutions.

Most Governments we have lived under haven`t really had to deal with a Global pandemic to be fair.

Plenty of u-turns have nothing to do with the pandemic or they've had plenty of time to make a decision but changed it the next day (exam grades spring to mind).

The exam situation was clear from what happened in Scotland but this Govt defended the algorithm and process even after that for days even though it was pointed out to them. They only stopped defending it just before u-turning.

Erm. I'm pretty sure that changing your mind about a big f**k-up is UNDEMOCRATIC.

Sorry, said government has a rather large majority and was democratically elected as such.
The electorate will have to live with that for a fair while yet, 2nd May 2024 if it goes the distance.

Scotland "U-Turned/reconsidered/admitted the mistake" on 11th/12th August.
England,Wales & NI done the same roughly a week later.

Summary of society these days "I want it and I want it now!".

So the Johnson Govt had a week's warning and still had to u-turn.

Alternative view.... took a week to think and made a better choice.

So what should Universities do?

Students back or not?

Relatively safe, young folk don`t get as ill, mitigation in place should be fine.

Downside........ socialising, 1 million students trundling around from/to Covid hot spots.

Your call. Now.
