I think the mistakes are pretty frequent to be honest. If an up-and-coming commentator had a trial and made the amount of mistakes and hesitations that he did, they wouldn't get the gig.

But he is not an up and coming commentator though. He is someone with years of experience of knowing the club inside and out and offers a useful perspective in that regard.
