Grant McCann has a promotion from league one. He also had Hully City sitting clear of the relegation zone despite having a very limited budget and a transfer embargo before the takeover- he also nearly took Doncaster to the championship who would have a considerably lower budget than ourselves. If you remove the MAPP tinted nostalgia glasses I think this is the best appointment we could of hoped for. Personally, I would of favoured Mark Warburton but i have no idea if he was ever in serious contention or not- he may well be in takeover charge of West Ham soon.

Today seems like a good time to
make the announcement but what time do these things normally happen?
9am?
11am?
4pm?
Allow time for the media rounds, news bulletins and other meetings to take place.

Other than joining the former Premier League Champions and taking Lincoln, a side with a bottom half League One side to the play off final in a short time-frame.

Then you’re right. He’s not done anything.
David Kemp went to the Premier League too...would you have him back? (not saying anything about MApp returning, just that joining staff in the Premier League is as much about who you know).

Out of interest.

Does anyone know if McCann has coached/managed any of our squad before?

so are people seriously saying they should recruit who the majority of fans want ?
I wanted McCann so I hope the rumours are true - nothing against MAPP but going back rarely works
More importantly none of us were at the interviews so we have no idea how they performed - maybe McCann was impressive & MAPP wasn't

I’ll accept the decision and hope it works out. I was certainly unsure about a MAPP return but if that was the decision, I would have been okay with it.

I was just expressing irritation about an invisible board in general.

I don't think anybody is critical of his credentials - he's clearly got L1 figured out. Not quite to the degree of Paul Warne or such like, but he's rarely far from the top. Posh, as we know, are not a great measure when it comes to managers as the slightest whiff of a bad run and Darren Ferguson showing interest, you're out on your backside.

If we had been in the top 2 all year, faded away to 8th and needed someone to finish the job, McCann is your guy. Great appointment. But is he what you want with 10 games to save your skin with a squad that is full of ability but missing 3 or 4 key ingredients? In this race you want a goal scorer, a couple of tough tacklers and proper vocal, lead-by-example leaders. We lack all of this, at the moment, unless he can unearth them within this group. I don't have a crystal ball, he may be a masterful appointment. But in my mind I'm doubtful.

The Hull boys, certainly. Smith was at Donny & Hull with him and he brought Fleming through to the first team from the academy at 18/19. Probably others, too.
Well if it is McCann hopefully he can utilise these two - as well as the rest of the squad - to the best of their abilities by playing them to their strengths. That will be a novelty after what we’ve seen so far this season!

I still think both Fleming and Smith have a lot to offer us this season. They arrived in the middle of an absolute train wreck and have probably wondered what the hell they agreed to. With a calming and organised influence - possibly someone they already know - let’s see what they can do.

I like them both to be honest. Easy to criticise them but we haven't set up well., tactically, for months. Shef Wed away is the last time I watched us and thought the game plan was on point. Fleming is a good technician but not once been used in the right setup. Smith I think has been given the ball about 5 or 6 times since he arrived. Wouldn't be at all surprised to see him bag 3 or 4 under McCann - his teams do tend to score goals and he has played a back 3 with wing backs before. We must go to that system.

I wanted Appleton purely because it was a romantic choice that the guy who got us promoted to league one comes in and saves us being relegated BUT I think McCann would be a solid option for us I don't really know much about how his team's play but he has got a promotion out of this league before

A few years ago, Dwight Yorke phoned up a Brum radio station and complained that he hadn't been given an interview for the Aston Villa manager's job. When he was asked if he'd got his coaching badges he said he was 'getting them'. When he was asked how he'd applied, he said he'd 'texted the club, but didn't get a reply '. It's no coincidence that most (but not all) successful managers have fairly modest playing careers. There are very few ex Prem players prepared to slum it in the lower leagues. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbank is the only one I can think of

Edgar Davids is another and don't forget the greatest mind Sol Campbell. :)

That was my next question.

What is McCann’s preferred formation/system? Is he flexible?

Can we expect to see 3/5/2 with Fleming and Anderson as wingbacks under McCann?

I tried to find that out last night and to his credit, it hasn’t been the same everywhere which is a good sign. He’s obviously flexible and picks the team based on what’s available.

He has played a back 3 quite a bit and also a 433/4231. So could be any of these that we see. I can’t see anything other than 352/343 with the players we have. Surely he will spot that….

I think a 343 with Fleming overlapping beyond Brown on one side and Anderson doing the same past Henry or, dare I say, an interested Josh Murphy, could be lethal.
