I would love to see someone substantiate this with proof. I can think of loads of times where it worked, and loads of times where it didn. Given how much our club has suffered recently, I can't fathom how the return of Appleton wouldn't give everyone a much needed lift.
Denis Smith and Jim Smith are the 2 we have had- both awful when they came back.

But if we’re honest with ourselves they were past it and had no idea at the level we were at, whereas, I think Appleton is a different kettle of fish.

I’d take him for the short & long term.

Some managers for some clubs become a good fit even if they’ve struggled elsewhere so if they do ever come back they continue their success and finish what they started. Nathan Jones at Luton and Eddie Howe at Bournemouth spring to mind. Perhaps MApp and Oxford are a good fit.

Nathan Jones went back to Luton and just carried on where he left off. It is all a nonsense. It either works or it doesn't, there is no rule. And we can't underestimate the winning over the fans factor, Mapp has already done that, which gives him a massive headstart.

Look, The board keep the fans on side, the fans are happy, we get good attendances. It just makes complete sense to make it all Appy!

Totally agree, and I think he would hit the ground running as he knows us and we know him.

Statistically Jim wasn't that bad , 41.5% win rate and highest ever conf position.
Denis rate of 26% much worse but obviously leagues etc have to be taken into consideration.

The job is going to be tough but nowhere near unsolvable.
We have been struggling for quite some time and I am sure that the players themselves will have a damn good idea why things went pear shaped.

Personally, I think it would be daft to think that absolutely everything came down to Karl and his incompetence. Professional players, you would hope would give the best of themselves whatever they thought of the manager or his actions.
Assuming then, that we can get someone in who can quickly make a team out of the wreckage and get them to play, there is no reason why we cannot expect the results to come but I don’t see that happening with anyone who hasn’t got that kind of experience in his locker already.
That must surely rule some of the monsters out ( you would think?🫣)!
It's important to remember that it was the players who finally forced the club to act after the Bristol Rovers debacle
Simon Eastwood made it clear they thought we were fighting relegation prior to the game and Cam pointedly failed to back the manager in his interview afterwards
It looks like they decided that things couldn't carry on and they made it impossible for the club hierarchy to continue to ignore the elephant in the room
I suspect that whoever comes in will have 100% backing from the players, who have been as frustrated as the fans

A successful return of Michael Appleton could only be possible with the full backing of the board. Hopefully that would be the case with any appointment.
I think he still has a lot to prove at this level, with only a couple of seasons of experience.

There’s no need to make it personal.

Doesn't matter who replaces K.R. we as supporters must give him a chance ! Get behind the team/manager no more bickering we are on a tightrope between relegation and league 1 survival let's all do our part !!!

Michael Appleton is a proper manager who has been around a bit and will get the players going. Having been here before I would say that is an advantage. I see he’s favourite again on sack race, yet Des has gone out to 25-1. I’d love Des as an assistant with a likelihood of following Apps as manager.
I am surprised that there has been no indication of any candidates dropping out or narrowing down of candidates.
The silence is deafening given we have a game on Saturday.

I think their going to go as is this Saturday

Does that mean Michael Appleton will be awful? If anything it means it's about time a manager came back and did ok.
It doesn't mean that at all.
You were asking for 'proof' that going back was a bad thing.
It is generally said in football that going back is a bad thing.
These are the only 2 examples that I can think of for Oxford
How often has going back been a good thing?
Mourinho at Chelsea? Won things but not as good as first time. Ferguson at Peterborough?

Really I think if you take the history out of it he has a better record than Mapp. Or do you mean his character?

Just in general, seems a bit indifferent and not towards the top of most peoples lists. I'm not sure he's the type of character who can come in and lift a club from the doldrums, he always seems a bit undemonstrative and laid back on the touchline. Not dismissing him completely, just think there's other names being touted who fit what's required a bit better.
