How to complete the season

Really though, a professional club is a name, a tradition, a league place, a shirt and ideally an established ground. I'm sure a lot of us would go along to watch in future if the first team was mainly kids plus maybe Ruffs and a couple of other senior players playing largely out of goodwill and helping to run the club. The problem we have is of course that we need to pay rent on the ground.
Once again, all the "usual" rules could go out the window and the lease could be terminated. We might have to change name or something, but so might others.

What about this, Oxford United as we know it, ceases to exist and becomes Oxford City. City changes their colours to Yellow and Blue. Games are played at Court Farm (as we dont need a stadium, as its all online viewing). Our Squad is made up of full and part time players, for example paid 500GBP a week or per game.

Do Oxford city know about this?

No.

In France they are planning to finalise the season through one of the following means

  • base the final standings on a points-per-game average
  • finalise the table on the last full round of games played - 27 in the case of Ligue 1
  • take the standings as they were after 19 matches, the halfway point of the season

If one of these approaches were applied to our league, where would we finish?

Well they can't do the second one as its never happened due to the Bury situation.

Possibly in court if the FlEFL have done this rather than consult the 71 league clubs

China it is then!

I was thinking maybe HERE wouldn’t be any less ridiculous than attempting to finish this season any time soon.

Quick run round with the whipper-snipper, ready made lodgings for all the teams to isolate in, and not another soul for hundreds of miles around...ladies and gentlemen, I give you the home ground of FC Stroitel Pripyat...it’s perfick!

Premier League bosses had let it be known just how important it was that the season be completed, pointing to the three-quarters of a billion pounds that contractually would have to be paid back to live TV rights-holders Sky and BT.

Whether the two broadcasters actually intend to demand all of the refund they are entitled to if the season cannot resume remains unclear. I understand they are considering asking to show more matches next year, or requesting a year's free extension to their current deal to mitigate the damage their businesses have suffered. But some kind of compensation will almost certainly have to be paid

I'm not sure the pitch would suit our passing game.

Plus of course, the broadcasters are losing out on subscriptions as people have cancelled or paused, and are concerned that if it goes on too long, people will find other ways to spend their money when they release they coped find without football on Sky

And Macron is saying that Europe should follow suit to what the French have done and cancel football

"If it goes on too long, people will find other ways to spend their money when they realise they coped fine without football."
That could be a big problem for football, people have broken the habit are now having to try and find an alternative past time, there is also the financial side of things, with a new season possibly on the horizon will the pleasure pound be there to spend on football, will ST be brought in sufficient numbers to justify the outlay of club owners (if they have the money), this virus will change the way football was run and clubs that survive will have to adjust their business model accordingly, it might be many years before football and society gets back to the pre virus days,.
We have always had a steady ST take up that the owners could base their budget on, to do better and increase the budget we have relied on walk ups and bigger crowds, will this be still feasible after the return of football and the lack of the leasure pound around.

I know most of us would turn up for a game even if Death himself was manning the turnstile but, I'll bet there are just as many "sensible" types who will see going to a crowded place as a suicide bid and will simply not go. Going to be some hard times for a lot of events and traditional entertainment venues.

Quite, will the normality come back when there is a trusted vaccine freely available, when the pandemic is under control worldwide, when people have got the same financial freedom as before the virus or when the grounds are open to allow "punters" in.

Absolutely. Outside of football and things like concerts and live music, cinemas are also on the brink now. Film companies are taking their movies directly to paid streaming and reporting very good initial results. Odeon have just thrown a massive tantrum and said they won’t show any Universal produced movies going forward after they essentially went “Yeah... we’re going to keep offering our movies as streams on the day of release rather than giving cinemas the exclusive rights to show it.” The ‘at home economy’ is positively booming at present and the longer it goes on, the harder it will be to drag people back even when things start to return. Or at least attempt to.

As for the season, I’m more convinced than ever that this country is never letting go of this season. That European countries are already starting to end it and an increasing number are now talking about coming to a group decision just makes me think it’s even more likely that we are going to go the other way. Surely to God nobody can justify carrying this on any longer?
