There's a time and place for it, not all the time. He won't be able to do that with our defenders and especially not Eastwood. He'll have to forgo it with what he's got at the moment otherwise it'll lead to giving goals away.

Lol, that's a worrying thought.

Just had visions of us needing a point at home to Accrington on the final day (Stanley need a win for survival) - it's goalless with 20 minutes to go - and Eastwood is trying to work triangles with Ciaron Brown and Stuart Findlay 🤣

Yes I know worries me as well. It could happen, that's the reality!!

Similar way to KR, losing?
That's unfair. KR completely lost the plot this season, and we all know why that was. Crazy decisions from summer to now. Honestly we might as well have had Timmy Mallett on charge for the value Karl was adding. Did he lose interest?

Prior to that, he was very capable of putting out a decent starting lineup that was good enough to beat a lot of what was put in front of it.

The trouble occurred when tactics came into play and we may as well of had a boiled egg on the touchline.

Agreed they’re doing way better than Man U in the last decade and converse to popular opinion haven’t spent as much as Man U on transfers

Yes, very successful. Great at what they do, I just don’t like watching City. Bore the pants off me. Not sure what Man Utd have to do with it though ?

Eastwood tries a Cruyff turn on his line and 35 year old veteran Shaun Whalley goes through him and the ball like a train.

I have two primary concerns regarding the appointment of Manning.

Firstly, and most pressingly, he is going to have no time whatsoever to implement his philosophy or preferred style of play. We are in a relegation battle and need wins immediately. Moreover, even if he somehow miraculously managed to get his philosophy across to the players before the Morecambe game, we simply don't have the requisite skills/abilities within the squad to implement it properly. The thought of Eastwood and Moore attempting 1-2s around opposition strikers in our own penalty box is going to give me nightmares for the next week.

With this in mind, I don't actually think Manning will attempt to change too much this season. He's a smart guy and will be well aware of the perilous position we're in. I think instead, he will be heavily reliant on Short and LBS, perhaps with the odd tweak here and there, providing specific instructions to certain players etc. Will that be enough? Time will tell I suppose. I am of the school of thought that believed the whole coaching staff should have been let go at the same time as Robinson, but I am not privy to what goes out behind the scenes at the club so that thinking is based on little other than my personal belief that we very much needed a full reset.

Furthermore, I also have concerns about Manning's ability to stop a rot. His MK Dons side was in free fall and he couldn't seem to do anything about it. Again, I don't know enough about what went on there. I understand he was let down by their recruitment in the summer, but we probably have an equally poor, if not worse squad than MK. There's very little evidence to suggest he will be able to change around our fortunes in the very short term.

My second concern relates to the club's supposed desire to move towards a more data-driven model, a la Brighton and Brentford. I think the word 'data' has become a bit of a buzzword in football in recent years. It sounds sexy (in a geeky sort of way), but just saying it isn't anywhere near enough. @Shosho will know much better than I how the likes of Brighton and Brentford have utilised data models, but I think I'm right in saying there needs to be a complete acceptance of the model/approach for it to work. You need a proper structure made up of a DoF (or similar title), scouts, and coaching teams, all of whom buy into the model entirely. Worryingly, however, it was, what, three weeks ago that Tim Williams brushed aside suggestions that we required a DoF because we have people in the building who 'know football'.

If the club truly want to go down the data driven model it's not as simple as appointing a manager that buys into it and employing an agency to scout some players. It's a full blown, live it and breathe it way of running a football club. I'm just not 100% convinced the likes of Tim and Grant see it that way.

Now, all of that said, I really do hope they get it right. Manning is undoubtedly an exciting, fresh, young football manager with lots to prove and lots to give. The data driven model could lead to us going back to signing hidden gems again, watching them develop before selling them for millions. If they do get it right, we could be in for a really fun and exciting few years and potentially a transformative period for the football club. Imagine if we do do a Brighton or a Brentford. It would be absolutely bloody amazing.

Let's just stay up first. Please. COYY.

Agreed, I much prefer watching Arsenal this season - attack with pace down the wings, tricky pacy wingers who run at defenders, and a good mix of midfielders. By far the most enjoyable team to watch in the Premier League at the moment, and I’d rather we played more like that than boring possession tiki-taka (although Man City have moved away from that a little with the signing of Haaland)

My point was just that to paint Manning as some kind of "continuation KR" isn't what most fans are hoping for. I was genuinely hoping for a more pragmatic manager who doesn't just try to pass teams off the pitch, the teams promoted from this division often show you have to be able to mix it up.

I sincerely hope Manning is better tactically than KR. KR's strengths were getting good players to be confident but even when we were making the play offs teams with weaker sqauds would tactically do a number on us often.

The fact Manning hasn't been announced yet is almost making me think there may be a late twist. This board know nothing about acting quickly though.

Lincoln saw an upturn in performance and confidence from the players even before a new manager came in
Of course we are short of numbers because of the spite of the outgoing manager
But I'm confident that the team will do enough to pull away from danger one there is a more stable environment once the new manager comes in
Providing of course we don't appoint another unstable, irrational candidate

So let’s just take another game/week before announcing the new manager or allowing them a chance to fully engage with the players!

If people want to argue over Man U, Arsenal, Liverpool, ManC etc please can they do so elsewhere and not clog up the thread about the manager of our club.

Link to the thread you might need.

Thanks in advance.

Really strange that there has been no formal announcement 📢.

It was related to the style of play which the new manager, if it is Liam Manning, will likely play, and whether people like that or not. Pretty relevant, and much, much more so than half the posts that are usually on these mammoth threads.

But still, maybe someone should say ‘There’s an old saying, never go back’, that’s much more interesting…

The board is taking the p... keeping everyone on tender hooks unless there are contractual problems ! We have an important game less than 24 hours away a disgraceful way to treat fans !!!

The final choice of manager is still to be made. It’s going to be like Great Pottery Showdown or The Farmer Wants a Wife. Except it’s The Manager Wants a Club.
At 2pm tomorrow the successful 3 candidates will be paraded on the pitch in front of the baying crowd..
Liam with his blond locks will read some Shakespeare.
Mapp will get his biceps out and McCann will be doing keepy-uppies whilst explaining his theories on 442.
They will each present their footballing ideas in a limited 15 minute practical session.
Tim and Rosie will do a Q&A with them and whoever answers the most number of correct historical OUFC questions or wins the crossbar challenge will make it to the final 2.
The crowd will cast the final vote using yellow or blue flags and Tiger will present the winner to rapturous applause.
Meanwhile Derby fans and club alike will be so moved that they decide to forfeit the the game and we are awarded an automatic 3-0 win.

I remember years ago they would occasionally put an embargo on news until like 6am so the Oxford Mail and radio Oxford would both 'announce' it at the same time.
No reason in this day and age, with websites, twatter, Facebook etc etc to kept us hanging on like this.
