Home Match Day Thread 16/07/22 PSF: OUFC v Coventry

On the plus side we get a nice long look at Golding against very good attacking opponents 😅

Yes and he did well. Reckon he has given himself a good chance of being part of the squad going forward.

Also, Goodrham looked one to keep around the squad as well. His direct running was something different and could be an option to use off the bench.

Findlay yes - and quite frankly has to be signed.

Another LB? No chance. KR has Seddon and Brown and he’ll think that’s sufficient. Neither of which are good enough. Seddon could make a LWB or even LM but he need to rein it in when it comes to attacking.
Don't agree.
We have been linked to a number of left backs. We are clearly looking for another

Sinclair is not the number nine we need. Lacks ability to hold the ball and also lacks pace.

Apart from the times he held the ball up and he had to wait for the midfield to get to him which he then laid it off. He had b****r all service today and the one time he did, he hit the post from a difficult position. But yes, it is Sinclair's fault he had no service and the midfield were a distance from him.....

I can't say I think that we learned much from that. A couple of the younger players did OK, a couple of the older ones sounded a bit disappointing.

There was a general lack of excitement though, it was all very one-paced, unthreatening and workmanlike. Unfortunately that might have been coloured for me by the fact that I am feeling very uninspired by the club at the moment. Let's hope they pull off a few positive surprises before the season starts to get us all fired up - because what we have is simply not good enough.
I wonder if this is a universally-held viewpoint at the moment, because I don't really feel energised or excited by the club at the moment. I do worry that the good feeling and big crowds we had built up over last season might be quickly lost.

Which four teams will be worse than us next season?
Whilst things aren't great on the signing front, I don't think they're that bad. An XI of Stevens, Long, Moore, Brown, Seddon, Brannagan, Gorrin, McGuane, Bodin, Taylor, Browne is more than good enough to see us in the top half this season. The only problem is that that isn't our aim this season, promotion is.

This is it for me too. There’s no momentum at the moment. There’s a spine of a team there but nothing extra to get us all out of our seats.

Think back to the summer of 2015. Signing Baldock, Roofe, Sercombe and so on. A flood of good signings to sit up and take notice.

This season? Nothing much at all. A couple of familiar faces (who didn’t manage to make the playoffs let alone get us promoted) and that’s it.

Very uninspiring.

It must be frustrating for the owners. They’re clearly spending a lot of money and at this moment it just feels flat.

That was lost about a week after the season ended...........the Club should have grabbed that with both hands with ticketing offers, merchandise sales etc etc.
Instead, everyone packed up and vanished for several weeks when an early season start was looming over the horizon almost as soon as the last one ended, ticket offers have been poor, kit "launch", well you can give us £50 and wait, and the lack of new folk through the door.

Maybe we don`t want to be promoted until other things progress further?

All a bit meh really.

That was as bad as anythjng we saw last season. Nothing up front and a defence that couldnt cope with what Coventry threw at them for the most part.
Goulding did well when he came. Into the second half though he struggled in the second half The youngsters ran around but Coventrys solid unit kept them at bay, towards the half way line.
It wasn't just obvious there was a complete lack of depth in the squad, but a lack of cohesion and get up and go.
Last seasons squad would have given Coventry a run for their money.

I think we are being naive on the strength of this div next season.

I think just that you need to put your money where your mouth is!
You could get great odds at the bookies if you really think that
Can you bet on a bottom-half finish? Feels wrong to bet against your team, I would be very confident on it though.

Not many
I see us finishing bottom 8 rather than top 8

That’s as it stands, the news about Baldock is not good
Gorrin hasn’t played , Long is injured
Moore has gone off injured

Our defence is much worse than last season

I feel a general gloom around the club at the moment

The buck stops with KR.

Few positives from that:

-McGuane looked a different animal in that holding role no one could get the ball of him & he used it very well
-Sinclair was better than I expected (although expectations were low) Put himself about, tried hard & should have scored
-CamBran industrious as ever & Ciaran Brown is a bit of a nutter uses all parts of his body to defend
-Goodrham looks a very very good talent
-James Golding while he may not be ready to start every game feel more than confident to rely on him if needed.

Negatives:

-Moore injury
-Defending set pieces + Forde is no starting right back
-Bodin & Henry anonymous and gave the ball away when they did have it
-Appreciate it was hot but movement was stagnant at times
-Goalkeeper distribution horrific as always

I also don't see why Karl rates Josh Johnson so highly, everytime i've seen him play he doesn't look to be a footballer, needs more composure hopefully that comes with experience
