National News Prince Phillip has died

I've done 60 years following OUFC. Does that count for anything? Must add 4 years following Headington United also.. Don't suppose my funeral will be televised.
I’ve only done 50. We’ve suffered but also enjoyed good moments

So in considering who might be one of the most significant figures in recent British history, two who immediately come to mind are HRH and Tom Moore. I think horizons need to be expanded a bit, and that's not being disrespectful to either candidate who both added to the life of the country, that's just being sensible.
There will be plenty more I’m sure.
Whenever, the name Churchill is thrown into the ring, there will be of course those who criticise him for racism or mistakes made during and before the war. Many of course will remember him as the war time leader, clearly not perfect, not that that can be said for anyone.
It depends on who is considered as a significant figure in British history. Many will no doubt think of sports personalities , film stars etc but I’m not sure they would be in the same category.
Were you thinking of any particular person that might qualify, Pete?

Quite a few footballers and pop stars there. Margaret Thatcher right up there too...bet Arthur Scargill would disagree with that. Interesting Churchill nominated by Mo Mowlam

Haha, yeah, some random names in there!
I used to listen to John Peel in my younger days and he was a great influence on my musical tastes. But I think he himself would have laughed at the idea of being the 44th ever greatest Briton! Mind you at least he beat Boy George at 46

I can’t think of too many that will be up there with him.
Captain Tom Moore, but I suppose them there will always be that will say he just did a few steps around his garden.
Prince Philip deserves recognition for his naval service before becoming a prince.
The Duke of Edinburgh award has received much praise from around the commonwealth too.
He has given this country over seventy years service. Not many people survive long enough to do that

Absolutely his military service is laudable as is the DOE Award. No problem with that but that still doesn't make him one of the most significant as was claimed.

Millions fought in WW2 etc so they get the same credit as well. There will be Politicians, Inventors, Scientists, Writers etc who are considerably more significant. The politicians in setting up the NHS (as we are going back to WW2), or the likes of Mo Mowlem for the Good Friday Agreement. Even Nigel Farage is more significant considering Brexit.

Others I'd suggest off the top of my head such as Tim Berners-Lee or Alan Turing.

As said what he did with military service and the DOE Award is laudable, it doesn't even come close to being in the most significant category

Tend to agree with this.

I would also add that accepting that your own career in the Navy was over so soon and then going on to fulfil Royal duties as consort to the Queen for 73 years is impressive.

It’s all very well saying it was a life of privilege but who on here would honestly change places? Not me, that’s for sure.

When you think that Meghan only lasted about a year in the Royal circus, it sort of puts it into perspective.

What exactly is Bono doing on the list?

Leaving aside the argument as to whether or not he's just a second tier rock star and philanthropist......under what definition is he a Briton?

Honestly, if it was me, I would probably just list Churchill, Shakespeare, Dickens and 97 scientists and engineers. But I may be a little biased.......

Depends how you’re defining significance. As I said, one of the most, not the most significant.
As the consort to the most significant person in recent British history alone he features in any list, whether you put him top or bottom of that list is up to you based on a wide range of factors.

No, he isn't even one of the most for the reasons already described. The Queen likewise is not the most significant either albeit she is at the upper end of the list.
