How to complete the season

It's ridiculous claiming that you've been disadvantaged because of that. They'd conceded 21 goals in their previous 4 games with almost exactly the same team you played. It's a complete red herring

They signed nine new players the day before they played Oxford, none of whom were available for the game against WhyCome? in which they fielded from memory, six debutantes in the Football League.

Four players were common to each game in the Bolton XI, of whom one was a goalkeeper and one played eight minutes as a sub.

It would be absolutely delusional not to think you got lucky with the Football League’s abysmal management of the Bolton issue.

Interesting point. But (apart from Cov) our remaining away games are at Burton, Lincoln, Accrington, Southend, and Shrewsbury. It's highly unlikely that any of them will have had anything to play for.

Regardless, it just proves the point that you can't predict purely based on home and away form alone when all these other factors come into it which could affect relative home and away performance. You can't introduce a control variable without accounting for unfair variation in the control variable itself

That old nothing to play for is a weak argument. I could give you countless examples of teams with supposedly nothing to play for raising their game to try and spoil the party. The only real example I can think of is when you rolled over on the last day and we went up. I think you’d get 9 points out of those remaining five away, not the 15 you seem to think.

Revisionism is continuously claiming that we were lucky to play Bolton's kids, even though:

1) We beat them comfortably away from home just before the season ended

2) Like us, you played them near the start of the season too, at a time when they'd lost their previous four league games by 5 goals (three 5-0s and a 6-1)

You'll notice that I have never once personally brought this argument into it. In my view, we all had the fixture lists given to us by the EFL.

The point is that you are trying to claim you had your "easier" away fixtures yet to come so you've been disadvantaged. Hence some are pointing out that you had the fortune of getting a walkover fixture against a Bolton youth team on the opening day of the season. You seem to be very defensive about this, which is the height of hypocrisy given your counter-argument against weighted PPG.

Another thing which I've just noticed. Like Wycombe, Oxford's home PPG is better than our away PPG (but with less disparity between the 2 because we've been the more consistent overall). But unlike Wycombe, Oxford have played more away than at home, hence that is having the effect of reducing our net PPG. So like you claiming you had some more favourable away games to come, we've had fewer home fixtures (where we are stronger) so our straight PPG doesn't have the artificial boost yours does by virtue of it being unevenly weighted in favour of fixtures where the team is stronger.

Weighted PPG corrects for this, and does so the same for every team.

And this is even better - we are champions with Wycombe in 8th.

Whilst I appreciate these can all be argued against, the fact that we are attributed much better ratings than Wycombe in both models does support the proposal that we have a better case for finishing third than our little non-league neighbours.

When you scroll down and see that 2 Matty Taylor goals gave us a final day comeback win to seal the title, I dread to think of the naughty things @RyanioBirdio would be doing to him after the game ?

Wycombe are in free fall their game day m hand is I believe away to Coventry, a draw at best in that game their game against us at their conference ground would have been a home defeat, the teams that have nothing to play for..... do me a favour they would love to spoil the chance of going into the play offs. So no there is no argument here based on home and away games you probably get fourth.

Oh dear, don’t let facts get in the way of a good story

That's revisionist. We won 5 of our 8 games between January 18th and February 22nd. And we are still only one point behind you with a game in hand. Hardly "imploding".

Before your five game winning run (which was very impressive), you were in terrible form and dropping away yourself. You can't say that form wouldn't have changed, when it changes all the time
Check the team I think it was 7/8 senior decent players with L1 and some championship experience lucky Bolton it they had played the kids tyat you had played against sod the 5 & 6 goals we would have scored more. What a stupid post to make comparisons

Just had a quick peak on their forum, as you’d expect they are saying the fairest way is to promote them, quite a few of them saying they’d rather stay down than get promoted on a technicality, wonder if they’d be saying that without it looking like it won’t go their way

comes to mind

One of these Bolton teams was the team that lost 6-1 to Rotherham. One of them was the Bolton team you drew against one week later. There isn't more than two players different, and some of those who didn't start came on as substitutes. So much for the influence of those "nine new players" that signed day before they played you...

Our game in hand isn't against Coventry or anyone specific. It can be against any of the ten teams we still have to play. That isn't difficult to understand.

If we'd played our match against Burton or Southend or Accrington, or whoever at all on that last weekend (instead of a week off) we'd have played the same number of games as you, and therefore would have made up the game in hand. Burton or Southend or Accrington etc would have been the "game in hand". Any one of our ten remaining games can be considered the "game in hand".
