National News Boris Johnson

I can see reasons to vote LD but wish there was more clarity and honesty in politics. Too much to hope for I guess

Thing is, the last person who tried clarity & honesty in British politics was Nick Clegg on tuition fees:

"It was a pledge made with the best of intentions – but we should not have made a promise we were not absolutely sure we could deliver. I shouldn't have committed to a policy that was so expensive when there was no money around. Not least when the most likely way we would end up in government was in coalition with Labour or the Conservatives who were both committed to put fees up. I will never again make a pledge unless as a party we are absolutely clear about how we can keep it."

He got absolutely excoriated for it, his party got blamed for all the failures of the coalition government and then got decimated in the next election, and the autotune remix of his apology made it into the singles chart.

Wasn't exactly a blueprint to encourage future generations of British politicians to do the same!

He'll win, and portray this as some great victory. Resign? Tish pshaw and nonsense, his party love him!
I’m not sure they do so much any more, but I think they’d be mad to drop him. He’s vain, lying, amoral, and idle but has a popular appeal that the likes of moronic Truss and swotty Hunt don’t

The most Important thing to bear in mind is it’s the figures that matter.
He won’t go unless the figures rise above 80/100 or so who oppose him.
Mind you it is a secret ballot so who knows

He had 131 MP's I'm support

He won't resign if he wins imo, regardless of the number who vote against him. If it becomes a problem getting his policies through, he'll try another general election.

Boris smashed it, 211 voted for him!
Still only 32 votes short of being forced to resign surely he has to look at that as a damning vote even though he knows he can’t be out through the mill for another 12 months.

I think it is finally sinking in at Tory HQ that defending being the morally bankrupt party will be impossible to fight a GE. Voters of all parties have had enough of brexit failures, economic hardship, galloping inflation and moral bankruptcy. Each day Pinocchio stays is another ballot box of voters lost. The Tory party can now only fall into two segments, those who support moral bankruptcy and those with no balls. The fact that so many MP's see no prospect of retaining their seat at the next GE whenever it is and the prospect of being a weak and divided opposition is deeply concerning. I cannot wait to hear the Mogg jump ship and call Boris a delinquent morally reprehensible cad. Only Mad Nad will remain loyal, still hoping to be a Boris conquest.

In percentage terms it’s a total disaster. 148 against is absolutely enormous. I believe that May attracted 63% of the vote in her no confidence win, and it was widely acknowledged that she was finished at that point. Johnson has managed to get just 58% tonight.

It’s going to get bumpier than ever now as he desperately tries to build a shield around himself.

Well I was thinking he was going to lose the vote, so... 🤪

Yup. By-elections are upcoming this month too in which the former Tory MPs were voted out for a) sexually assaulting a boy and b) repeatedly watching pornography in Parliament.

Of those by-elections, the former was held by Labour for 80 years until 2019. The latter has a large majority, and Labour and Lib Dems will likely split the vote, but who knows.

If the Tories lose one or both of those, there will be calls to remove the one year wait until another no-confidence vote.

Probably the best possible result for Labour. Bad result for the rest country for the next two years.

Gutted, 2 off a return.
