Home Match Day Thread +++ 05/09/2020 Carabao Cup R1 OUFC v AFC Wimbledon+++

Well done Easty, when it mattered he came good but a bit of a let off. Well done the lads.

Glad we won on pens of course, but a quite disappointing performance after a decent pre-season and (yet again) proves that no pre-season game really gives a proper indication of the state of the team.

Lack of pace, poor crossing, lack of supply to the striker and a weakness at set pieces are the negatives from the game.
Atkinson, Eastwood and McGuane's first half performance are the obvious positives.

Let's hope that Cooper, Clare and the hoped for two new signings improve us.

Cam mom so deserved he hit the winning goal. Easty also excellent

I "watched" us beat Charlton on penalties via teletext, that was stressful...

The one back in the day that was "the beginning of the Jefferson Louis era"? Remember that game well......we've had some good times at the Valley!

Doesn't sound like it was a great performance today, but good to progress. Nice to have a couple of competitive games to iron out some of the kinks before the important stuff starts.......

Something of an anticlimax after a promising pre-season. Lessons to be learnt and tactics required. That's two teams in a row that have stood off and waited for an opportunity to counter and we nearly lost again.
Giving a team that waits for set pieces free kicks galore is just daft. We must learn.

Hopefully a wake up call. I appreciate we’re not going to be firing on all cylinders first game of the season, however it exposed where we are weak.

Frustrating isn't it - we don't get cheap free-kicks handed to us. Basically the damage we incur is largely self-inflicted.
Too many occasions today where we overpass and nobody really took their man on when they could have .

Plenty to work on including fitness.

Very good summary, and against a team fancied for relegation as well. We desperately need far more mobile defenders to set off the wingers, to then get the ball across. Eastwood back to his best.
This is one time when we need KR to be spot on about bringing in these two players in. This season is going to be about pace, mobility and getting that ball into goal scoring areas.

Eastwood MOTM, basically got us through with the penalty saves plus made a good one with his feet

Atkinson and Brannigan also good. McGuane promising.

Fullbacks poor and we lack pace out wide.

How about your view that it's time Eastwood should be replaced? Are you sticking to that?

Henry and Sykes hasn’t really worked as the two supporting wide players. Can barely remember Henry having a kick all game today. Don’t think that’s the long term solution, we just have too many players in the squad who can play CM or on the right to fit them all in.

McGuane hasn’t completely convinced me so far but sure he’ll develop. Just takes a lot of extra touches and his passing has been hit and miss. Atkinson an obvious positive today (although on another day gives away a pen) but biggest positives are another 90 minutes under their belts, in the hat for the next round and more time to work on attacking the final third. And defending set pieces!
