Championship Appleton new Blackpool boss

Mapps back asap. I don’t care what other managers are out there. This man can build a squad, and has lots of valuable connections in the game. Played the best brand of football I’ve ever witnessed as an OUFC supporter.

Just sack this clown currently in charge, and pay him off. KR is not a patch on Mapps. FACT!

Oh my, I thought he was meant to be good. Just a flash in the pan with us I guess. Yes manager swap!

It is really funny the way things play out, and how different managers and players are regarded at different clubs.

Just to play devil's advocate......

.....the best brand of football I've ever witnessed was Denis Smith's first spell from 93-97. Marauding wingers, deadly strikers, goals galore and solid AF at the back as well.

We brought him back in 2000, and it was an epic disaster. Stayed up in League One by the skin of our teeth in his first season (mostly thanks to pre-injury Paul Powell) and then he left us the following October with the worst squad in the club's history.

Sometimes going back is not the way forwards!

I believe he was only 7 months into a 4 year contract
It's unlikely he will be free for another job immediately
There is probably going to be wrangling over the severance payment

I would say exactly the same but the best football I ever saw was under Jim Smith, look what happened when he returned.

Weren't we imploding financially in his 2nd spell?

Yeah, I'm old enough to clearly remember DNEMSO and a little bit of the Horton years.

But my only memories of the Bald Eagle involve Alex Jeannin and Phil Trainer!

That's a bit of an understatement. And the reason we ended up with the dream* centre-back pairing of McGuckin and Jarman. We also had the worst shirt I've ever seen us play in that season, some mustardy-coloured abomination.

* Nightmares are dreams.

Wouldn't want him back just because of the way he left to go for an assistant role.

Denis Smith's second spell was the early Firoz period (Kassam took over April 1999, Smith was reappointed February 2000).

So yeah, he had to deal with a penny-pinching owner who was focused on getting the stadium situation sorted so he could make his money. But we weren't about to go bust.
(in the twelve months after Smith left, we actually paid some fees for players......unfortunately the players we went for were Andy Scott, Rob Quinn, Sam Stockley and the broken shell of Paul Moody)

I still don't think it excuses McGuckin and Jarman!

Tonyw when you put it like that it brings it all back.

Second time around I remember JS going ballistic on the touchline because players couldn’t do the simple things correctly.

He must have thought why the f**k did I come back

The spending splurge you speak of was certainly a weird time, I believe it coincided with the arrival of Kinnear and Kemp (well the double signing of Scott and Quinn at any rate). Then Kinnear decided to leave the club and left us with Kemp in charge, and no more signings came. I remember Scott and Quinn playing bloody well against us earlier in the season for Brentford in their win at The Manor, so was quite excited by their signings.
