Home Match Day Thread 22/01/2022 L1: OUFC v Sheffield Wednesday

McGuane our best player? What are you smoking? Weakest link by miles .

Men of match Taylor and Sykes. Superb.
Certainly wasn’t our ‘weakest link by miles’. That’s absolute madness. McGuane was fine yesterday, held the ball well in a packed midfield under pressure. Brilliant cross for the goal. Don’t disagree with you on Taylor and Sykes.

Another great game to watch.

Starting with the warm up, I noticed an Oxford player with a really sweet left foot and had to check who it was. It was Bodin. And he brought that foot into the game.

Clearly the change in system in the latter part of the first half won the match, and we were very fortunate to go in at half time 1-1. Was this managerial genius. Or was it finally a manager being released from his stubbornness. It was clear after last week and in previous games that McGuane with any sort of defensive responsibility was a complete liability and he was hopeless positionally yesterday and this allowed Sheff Wed to run all over us. But this is nothing new. It happened only 7 days previously, and I said if we didn't have anyone to fill the DM role it has to be 3 CBs rather than McGuane anywhere near defensive duties. Finally it happened and McGuane became a different player being allowed to go 20 yards further up the pitch and actually do what he is actually good at in the attacking areas.

And I am going to be critical with the set up to this match again. To have only 6 subs on the bench, which included players that seemingly have no future at the club. is very poor when we are in a transfer window. If we are that short of personnel you must try harder with recruitment in the week prior to matches.

Nice to see that we scored 3 goals all of which were put away from 6 yards or less out. These are exactly the sort of goals we need to be scoring rather than keep relying on perfect passing moves leading to an unbelievable team goal. It is very encouraging that we are creating these sort of chances and that they were put away.

Sheff Wed's goals were very high quality team goals, among the best that we have seen against us recently and the sort that we like to try and create and score. Sometimes there is little you can do about opposition goals like those.

Er if you’ve got a squad of 24 and are missing half a dozen plus a couple more on the day you can’t do anything about it! You won’t sign someone on Saturday morning.

What a match! It's clear that having Stevens back in goal makes a huge difference, and hopefully he stays in goal so we can maintain our winning run.
I will admit to being surprised when Eastwood was not selected and I think Stevens will be hugely disappointed with the two goals he conceded - I hope it's down to yesterday being his first start since October.
Seddon had an awful game yesterday and gets so out of position. He’s costing us a least a goal a game at the moment. He needs to prioritise on his defending first as that is his primary role, anything other than that is a bonus.
Ironically, we looked much more comfortable when Seddon was in an advanced position with Long, McNally and Thorniley doing the bulk of the defensive duty.

Not really, he was vary shaky. Thought he was very slow to get down their first and his indecision lead to his kick being charged down which ultimately lead to their second. Neither of our keepers fill me with confidence, something to address in the summer perhaps?
Agree with that. If the pitch was twice the width Stevens would still put the ball out of play. A lot to learn. Just an observation.

Really don’t get some people’s issue with McGuane. He reminds me a lot of Joe Rothwell, who seemed to get a similar level of stick here and is now tearing it up at the top of the Champ, with Prem interest mooted.
Anybody who couldn’t see that Joe Rothwell was a Rolls Royce of a footballer needs a full medical examination. And I do mean full.

Did he chase after lost causes pointlessly? Commit needless fouls? Argue with the ref? Try to wind up the opposition players/fans? The lad is stealing a living.

Edit. I missed out pointing and shouting a lot, that’s what proper players do.

Who's doing the examination?

If it's you then I suggest some decent gloves. Clotet strikes me as the sort of guy who is pretty hairy all over.

No one and I mean NO ONE did pointing like Martin Gray. He also liked a gee-up the crowd gesture.

Amazing how little it takes to win over a crowd. .

I beg to differ. NOBODY pointed better and more frequently than Matt Murphy. Fact.

Absolutely. Even getting a cheeky,
