Ex Player Rob Dickie

so don't state we're going for it this season then if you can't afford what lay ahead

We sold players and still got better under KR and the recruitment team. How are we funding these losses if we aren't selling players*?

*And if you think we are suddenly going to get loads of money to cover those losses in the Championship, I suggest you look at the losses Championship clubs suffer.

Once again the main point is missed, all that can be achieved with us if we truly are ambitious and the 2.5 is chicken feed compared to what the Championship can bring.
so again you've proved my point grab the money. Why not stop all this one season more crap and try to achieve your ambition with those players.
We clearly aren't going to agree on whether we should retain Dickie or not. My view is we shouldn't retain what would be a disaffected player and throw away the £2m fee however, what will be interesting is what happens to the money. If it is reinvested in a couple of decent new players, that does show ambition. If however, it is used to offset next season's losses then I agree that this doesn't show ambition but rather a desire to run the club sustainably.

Jeez they're buying another defender out of his contract to fit Dickie in. They must really rate him, fair play.

We have this 'debate' over selling players literally every transfer window. It gets very tedious. If people haven't grasped that selling players on for millions of pounds of profit is our model by this point, they're not going to. You can 'be ambitious' and 'got for it' one season while still selling players to suit the model. They're not mutually exclusive things.

£2.5m with a 10% sell on would be my guess. Good business by the club, and as zero said earlier... It puts the club in a good light, and will enable us to bring in other young players, and if they perform the club will not begrudge them a move.

People get shitty if we sell someone for less than their valuation of a player, but as fans we have no idea of a players worth, we are not going to see the money, we don’t have to fund the club etc, so I struggle to see why some get so irate about it.

We are Oxford United, anyone who is decent will move on elsewhere, it’s not likely to be a big club they go to (who was the last of our players to go directly to a big club, Ray Houghton?), we won’t be getting £5 million plus (not at league one anyway) but what we are doing seems to be working at the moment.

what is tedious is saying one thing and then making decisions that are risking those initial statements.Anyone can state an ambition but achieving them is another matter.
We took a risk last summer to suit the model, an even bigger one in January to suit the model with promotion staring us in the face and an opportunity that does not come your way very often. Then having taken that risk and ultimately failed we state now we're going for it from scratch rather than when there were just a few games remaining and yet now sell our captain because that's the model...so for ambition replace with hope to get lucky.

Why is having a different opinion getting "Shitty"?

I don't think that the Championship is the land of milk and honey you make it out to be. £2.5 million is not an insignificant amount to teams in the Championship.

Here’s how to value a player:

1. Whatever the highest figure a buying club is willing to offer
2. Whatever the lowest figure a selling club is willing to accept

Ultimately it’s an intangible asset folks

so a spend north of 40 million on a new stadium rather than remain where we are is to stay in League 1 is it? maybe i got it wrong but i thought i read on here that this shiny new stadium that we're suddenly going to fill in the Championship was the answer?

Where is this £40 million coming from? It certainly isn't the extra money that being in the Championship would generate.

Dickie has been announced by QPR "undisclosed fee" number 24 shirt given.

Surprised we are still having the debate, we always knew he was going.
All this rubbish about lacking ambition is nonsense in my view. The reality is that league 1 is still where we are at and retaining Dickie is not an option because we can't deny him the opportunity to move to the Championship and earn the money that will be on offer. The ambition to keep building and bringing in young players and then selling them on for profit is the business model and actually wouldn't change even if we were in the Championship because all we would do is sell better players for even more money. Personally I don't have a problem with it, if it ensures the clubs survival.

On the 30th July the Oxford Mail reported KR saying the following about Dickie :-

"There's been a lot of interest.

"We've had a phone call (talking) in excess of an awful lot of millions.

"Would that be enough to get him? We've said no.

It's quotes like that which get the fans speculating on the size of fees.

Ultimately as others have pointed out Dickie is only worth what a club(s) is willing to pay and then it is down to OUFC as to whether we agree with that valuation.

In Dickie's current contract situation I think the largest bid(s) we'll get will be around £1 million plus a decent sell on clause, perhaps tagging a decent player on loan / in exchange would help sweeten the deal for us.

Dickie has already signed 1 contract extension which gave us some added protection last summer, it worked well for both parties. Understandably with likely 'treble your pay' offers he won't be signing a new contract with us and who can blame him? I think for all parties involved a deal needs to be quickly done.

Exactly this. I just don't get why some people think losing millions each year will result in anything other than disaster. So far this model has been working.

Interesting how much debate this is about the amount we sell a player for. Must have been a boring forum between 31 Jan, 2006 when we sold Craig Davies Verona for £85,000 and the next sale Callum O'Dowda to Bristol City for an undisclosed fee on 01 Jul, 2016

Our extremely rich backers if they can see a return from the investment. Look at what Thohir did at DC United.
