Gavin Whyte

I'll be in the minority here, but I think Hanson could well be a valuable player for us. If he stays fit (yes big if) and if we want cover in most positions across the pitch - then for me he is definitely the best Gorrin back up. And this is a key position for the team, as often we are playing 4141 - even though it's sexier and more positive to call it 433.
I liked what I saw v FGR. I think we've seen that Liam Kelly is much better higher up the pitch and Mous may well be removed from the playing squad if we get another CB in.
And the big if above, plus his wages will be a reason why it won't be easy to loan him out anyway.
But I agree with everyone who says that Hanson is certainly not a full back!

I think that's a bit kind to Hanson TBH. He has been unlucky with injuries, and granted that he did 'OK' against a L2 side the other night but I can't really think of any games he has played where he made a significant improvement to the team in any of the positions he has played.

I'm not sure that 'he is versatile' is enough to keep him if he isn't that good and if clearing him out of the 22 frees up space for someone more effective then surely that's got to be an option. Whether anyone will take him is another matter.

I think Hanson needs to play regularly for his longer term career to prove his fitness.

I'd also add that Gavin Whyte will know he'll play regularly for us and how KR plays which is to our advantage.

Be nice but can’t see it

It just isn't going to happen. Why would he take a step back. He established himself here. He needs to do the same somewhere else to show he is not a one trick pony. Hope I'm wrong.
because he wasnt good enough for the championship.easily moved too soon.

He’s a central midfielder and nothing else. Not right back cover, not centre back cover - a central midfielder. Play him there and he might offer something including valuable depth in a busy year. Treat him as a utility man and it’s back to square one, whether he’s fit or not.

At some point all players need to be put in a box marked ‘my role’ and not kicked around the pitch ‘doing a job’. The current set up has had long enough to not still be in this position. They should know where everybody plays and doesn’t play, more importantly.

If he stays fit and only operates in his natural position I think people might be pleasantly surprised by what a decent option he can be.

I think that been a problem with a few players Ayegi Sykes Hanson Clare have all suffered that fate some can do that & move positions to do a half decent job of it an make it there own Long, Ruffels even Forde possibly but others can’t

Interesting!! Last week when I was defending someone on another thread for saying players should play in their natural positions and not be seen as jack of all trades, I got told by several on here that there is no such thing as a 'natural position' anymore!! Which of course is rubbish.

Some players have one position they can play in.
I just don't buy the fact that good players can't develop and change their positions.
Any OUFC supporter will know that the great Trevor Hebberd was signed as a striker. He would have been annihilated the kips of this forum after his first season with us.
John Trewick was a centre midfield player and became a top left back .
Cadden was a terrific right back for us and even Marvin became a very good left back under MAPP

If he has Championship clubs interested and chooses to go back to us instead it would be turning down a good looking bird in favour of the old palm sisters.
Come to think of it, maybe we have a chance then?

True but Marv didn’t like that

Assume this is about Hanson, in which case I completely agree. And is what I was saying. I think he could be valuable as a Gorrin back up or as one of the 2 in a 4231 formation.
(A formation I like as potentially it gives more cover for Atkinson's ventures forward and enables one or two of the 3 to get closer to Taylor)

Yes I don't deny that can happen sometimes, usually wingers into full backs. But generally a player is coached through the age groups and they make it as a pro in that position which is natural to them and that is where they thrive. Every player has a natural position.

There are numerous examples of players whose position changes from their original development stage. Players lose pace, gain a better understanding of the game, their bodily physically changes and the level of responsibility changes.
Like most things in life, your understanding changes, your role changes. Football is no different.

I think the point was that eventually you need to specialise, you can’t stay an odd job man for ever

Totally agree but the point being made was most players stay in their development role position. There are numerous examples of players excelling in a different role from their development role. The jack of all trades master of none player tends to evolve from not holding down a regular role and being skilled enough to play well in many roles. For some it extends their career, James Milner being a prime example. Invariably they are players who have a good team ethic.

I agree a change can happen later in a career. I remember Nick Cusack being a fairly hopeless striker for us but apparently he became a good midfielder after he left us.

Towards the end of the season he was mainly used as a sub by Hull.
Who questioned his positional strengths attacking wise.
Was used as wing back in his last Northern Ireland game.
Hopefully we can get something done if true.
