If that's £300K then that sounds a decent deal. Whilst he's raw and fresh, I fully expect the club to have done loads of homework and no doubt they're delighted.

Fair play Ed, Des and the owners!

Plucky Charlton need to go back in for JCH now and re-negotiate with Darragh. Mwhahahahahahahahahahaha

If we spend that 400k, I honestly will not know quite how to react. It's been sitting there since 2007, so it's quite sentimental.

Well you can start complaining that taking into account inflation since that time it should really be £500k...

If we’ve had it since 2007 it’s only worth 200K now!

It might have been worth £500K or more if we had invested it in an Eisa (I am Jeff Stelling, goodnight).

No, I’m not advocating the club simply close down the academy but as with every expenditure in the fantastically expensive business of running a successful professional football club I would like to see a proper cost analysis to see if it’s worthwhile. Yes, of course we’d like to have one but not if it doesn’t achieve its purpose and doesn’t become a money pit. I’m not yet convinced one way or the other. But I hope the club is across the financing of it which proves that overall it is of real benefit to the club. Is that analysis available? You would hope so. Are they going make it available to the fan base? Probably not.
Strategic investment so a direct cost/benefit only part of the picture. We don't *need* a training ground as nice as ours as far as the spreadsheet is concerned but without it many intangible benefits are lost. As well as other people's examples didn't we also have an academy graduate keeper go to man utd and another to a premier League b team in last year or so? Likely the academy not a major drain in the grand scheme of things.

Could always do a Brentford and abandon the academy model but that needs extremely deep pockets and much more upfront financial risk.

Henry is obviously gone (wait for someone to say put him on the coaching staff now) but I hope its the same with the other two, you have to have higher standards than what Browne and Murphy are able to give you, even on cheap deals where is the value? With Edwards added as well, a player with no real history of playing a lot we are carrying a lot of attackers but still light there due to how little we get out of so many of them.

I believe the various ITKs have alluded to Browne, Murphy and Henry's combined wages being the best part of £20k a week. That's a hell of a lot to play with when those contracts expire. For that money you could expect 5 or 6 good quality wingers, each with working knees and hamstrings.

By 'significantly reduced wages' for retaining Browne and Murphy, I'm really talking about something heavily weighted towards appearance time, and something that should only be offered if we have room in the budget and the squad places. It really would be a 'well let's see what they could do' but only as a bolt-on after we've recruited properly in the first place, not as a cornerstone of our recruitment policy. The days of 'best player in the league when he's fit' should have gone out the door with Karl.
