Home Match Day Thread +++ 13/10/18 OUFC v Plymouth Argyle +++

Plus points:

It was a win (yahoo!)
A much better performance all over the pitch by every player
A clean sheet at home
Two league games unbeaten, 4 points out of 6
Off the bottom of the table
Mackie. I was afraid that his poor performances were because he was knackered rather than his lack of fitness. Hugely relieved to be wrong!
Virtually no farting about with the ball at the back from our own roll outs or short kicks.
Eastwood being back (although I thought he'd knackered his finger again at one point in the first half)
Browne was good - he's obviously still not fit though. Will he ever be 100%?
Mousinho as defensive mf (where he played for Burton). It plays to his strengths and minimises the damage if he make one of his mistakes.
Robinson not doing the post match interview.
Nice to be going home happy from football - it's been a while...

Not quite so plus points:

Our defence is still quite capable of the occasional howler.
Still in the relegation places.
We really should have put more past Plymouth.
Plymouth are abject. I know you can only beat what is in front of you, but I'd want to see us play someone a bit better before I felt a great revival was here.
Some of the football on display from both teams in the first half was laughably poor. We were better after the break - they weren't.

Other stuff:

The Plymouth keeper was terrible - dropping things, flapping at the ball, not coming for the ball when he should have etc. I thought he was one of the poorest I've seen for a while.
Unless Plymouth improve by quite a lot, one of the relegation places is already spoken for.
Does this result change my view of whether Tiger (or whoever own the club in a couple of weeks!) should be keeping their phone bills up by looking for a new manager? Not really, certainly not yet. Maybe a stay of execution. Let's see how the 'revival' goes over the next three games.
A Plymouth fan on Radio Oxford said the keeper played well, I had to laugh at that

Regardless of how good or bad the opposition were, it was a great result to build on from Southend.

We did what we needed to do and if we had our shooting boots on 5-0 wouldn’t have flattered us.

Lots of positives from yesterday with an underlying current of so much still to do.

Other results also went well for us and some huge 6 pointers coming up... This is now the time to quell some of the negativity (me included).

Didnt a Plymouth guy on the phone in rave about his performance yesterday?

He was shockingly poor.

Yeh, a local guy but a Plymouth fan.
Deluded obviously, reminded me of Paul (couldn’t catch a cold) Kee ?

Very good performance yesterday, let’s hope we can build on that and go and get a result at Bristol.

COYY

Have to say the whole team played well. Let's hope that Mackie can stay fit, he was immense. Browne being back gave us pace that's been lacking. And what did they put in Henry's tea? He had a terrific game.

I really hope Plymouth stay up, they are a great club and well supported.

The next game will show us if there is a light at the end of the tunnel

Yes, I thought that. Was he actually at the game, or just a nutter who fancied being on the radio??

Thank you zero. I thought goal one was best but seeing it closer up the second one edges it. Well done Mackie

Just watched the sending off incident - isn't it great that we have a *** like Mackie in the side?

More of the same please!

You’re right about the negativity also me included, but yesterday’s performance won’t count for anything unless we can carry on over the next few games, and I hope we do a win against the gas could take us out Of the relegation zone.

Probably not the right thread for this but got my tickets this morning for Brizzle next week, I’ve even persuaded the missus to come long. The more we get there the better. I feel next week is even more important now than yesterday was, if that kind of makes sense? Derry spoke of building blocks after yesterday’s game. Well we laid the foundations yesterday, hopefully the first course of blocks go down next week.

Plymouth were always going to be poor. Some thought we still had little chance!
We still had to beat them.
One thing however is that Southend were absolutely no mugs at their place.
So 2 good results in a row. Totally agree with you that we need to build on this.

Sadly I was one of them. We were so so poor on Tuesday night. But so happy to be wrong!

Northampton was hardly a match to light up the skies. When the going got tough we did the business even if Plymouth laid over for us. They were there for the taking and whilst it hasn’t happened before this time it did.
Persistence paid off and Mackie made the difference for us.
I hope he plays against Charlton. Get a point there and I’ll start to believe our season is getting under way

Great sentiment. We’re playing Bristol Rovers next though.

Bristol are poor. They create chances but cant pput them away. At the back they are pretty woeful. Take a look at the highlights vs Burton from yesterday.

Bristol didn't have a shot until around the 50th minute yesterday...at home

Need the exact same as yesterday, put them to the sword. Wrap Mackie and Browne in cotton wool this week

This ^^

Obviously not at our expense but I’ve always felt there’s a good bond between the two clubs.

They are perpetually in the lower leagues with that hint of more potential and a big catchment.

We’ve had some good games against them and it’s normally a decent attendance and atmosphere.

They have good away support and their fans tend to be knowledgeable

.....and rarely act up. they still have that edge like us if they’re crossed rather than being plastic like Wycombe, Northampton, Cheltenham, etc who all have an inferiority complex around us. But without being Luton style constant Neanderthals

One player i think had a very good game but hasn't received much praise is Ruffels. 2nd half especially. Played a crucial part in the second goal putting Mackie through and was a very good attacking threat whilst nullifying Carey on there right before he was forced to swap wings. Thought him and Browne worked well together.
