Home Match Day Thread 26/02/2022 L1: OUFC v Cambridge United

I said before the game that Cambridge were a side deserving of respect. Much of that comes down to Mark Bonner. He’s a manager well worth keeping an eye on.

I'll say the same thing that I said at halftime - I didn't actually think that Cambridge's players, as individuals, were much good at all. Lots of poor passes, poor touches, mistimed challenges. But Bonner had them exeptionally well drilled, and their tactics were just right for playing against us. And purely thanks to that, they almost nicked something even though we've got by far the better set of players.

He's one of the new breed of managers that never played professionally, but has worked his way up the coaching ranks starting with the kids. Big future, you would think.

Very well summed up. You’re right, individually they weren’t great, except maybe Hoolihan, Smith and the ginger haired lad, but collectively they knew their jobs. Closed down the space in midfield, especially in the first half, and had a bit about them on the counter. To me, it looked like they ran out of steam and just got a bit ragged around the time we got our third. Having now seen them I’ll have a bit of hope though when they’re playing our promotion/play off rivals and that point on the opening day, that looked a bit underwhelming, doesn’t look such a bad point after all.

Someone left a scarf behind on their seat, the north stand end of the Jim Smith stand i handed it to a steward

Cambridge fan here in peace, chaps. Wanted to echo our manager’s words really. Thought you handled a very difficult situation with class today and I’m sure Joey’s family were extremely touched by the tribute. Can only apologise for Smith’s behaviour - an embarrassment and certainly not representative of our club or what we are about. Hopefully he’ll have had a word in his ear from the manager and some of the more experienced players (Hoolahan etc). Anyway, all the best for the rest of the season. You have a very good side - dangerous going forward and you’ve every chance of going up, in my humble opinion.
Thank you and thank your fans who attended today and behaved impeccably on a very difficult day for many of us. It looks like you have an excellent articulate manager. All the best to you all as well.

Mad how quickly Baldock has endeared himself to the fans. What a quality player and decent bloke. Would love to have him for another year or two.
I think if there is any possibility we could get him for the next two/ three seasons we need to do it the same with brannagan

Thank you so much for this. Cambridge have made a lot of friends in Oxford today and I for one will be looking sympathetically on your progress henceforth. The empathy demonstrated by Cambridge fans is not a given in football but it helped a lot of people, including I'm sure Joey's family, get through a day that was both heartening and very difficult. What an incredibly thoughtful and intelligent manager you have in Mark Connor. As regards Smith, he has apologised and we should now put it to bed.

Thank you , your fans acted impeccably, class, unlike Smith

Club and fans aside, huge credit to Joey’s family, especially his young daughters. What incredible strength to go out there in front of everybody right now. Seeing those two girls walking across the pitch was absolutely heartbreaking. They are a credit to him.

To win the game and for a couple of Oxford lads to get on the scoresheet in Taylor and Baldock was simply perfect. Exactly the way that Joey would’ve wanted it.

Well done to all who were a part of it.

Agree, although if we don't go up this season, I'd imagine keeping Brannagan will be virtually impossible.

I'd also like to see us work hard to tie Williams down to a new long term contract, the guy is an awesome player, who performs well wherever he plays.

I'm so surprised at how much he has matured into a much more complete player than when he was here last, he had a hand in every goal yesterday, either with his excellent passing, or intelligent crossing, his overlapping runs were superb, and he really gets stuck into his defensive duties as well, and seems to really understand the position.

Ok, he got pulled out of position for their 2nd goal, but it happens, and he'll learn from that, but for me, he's now one of the first names on the team sheet, it seems like whenever he plays, he gets MOTM!

I'd expect Long to move back to RB when Moore returns, so I'd look to start Williams ahead of Seddon at LB or LWB.

Well done Willo! 👏
