Away Match Day Thread 08/02/2022 L1: Accrington Stanley v OUFC

Expensive hotel bill last night (are they on the bus now?) How were they set up tonight? Clearly not in the right frame of mind and another shambolic night.

I think the pitch and conditions hampered our style of play massively as well tonight, that can’t be underestimated the ball was bouncing all over the shop when dribbling through. Sykes had a few runs down the left and the ball kept sticking which stopped the momentum massively, in other conditions I think we may have seen a different result here. Only option we had was a long ball forward which isn’t any good for someone like Taylor, needed a big unit up there tonight.
at the very least it wouldve been more entertaining

A very simple point - Accrington aren’t a good side, we are (as you’ve shown) - hence we should be beating them.

What’s yours? Accrington are better than us?

Not sure I follow you?

We can’t win them all.

What Accrington managed against those teams has no relevance to us.

You were suggesting Oxford are not as good as those teams because they didn‘t lose to Accrington and we did.

We both know football doesn’t work like that. I get your frustration, but not your reasoning.

Some of our fans need to get a grip of themselves! Lose 1 game and we now aren’t going up, Robinson isn’t good enough, transfer window wasn’t good.
The same fans then have the cheek to laugh at Pompey, Sunderland and Ipswich fans for over reacting to a defeat!
This league is one where anyone can beat anyone. Accrington are no mugs and have picked off some of the so called bigger teams already this season!
Christ, Cheltenham even beat Sunderland tonight!
It was a bad night at the office but that is all. No big dramas.

Wonder what excuse Robbo will come out with
Well Baz, Robbo was bemoaning that he had to put out a 'makeshift' defence and then losing Brown caused us even more problems.
Well Karl when you don't sign enough defenders that can happen.
You couldn't make it up!!
Conceded 2 goals in 6 of the last 7 games. That has to change, we won't score 3 every game.

Crazy decision to rest Mark Sykes tonight as he has been playing well and he gives us energy and legs.

Should have kept him in the side ahead of Willow.

Agree with Robinson in his post match assessment when he said the ball was barely in play in the second half.
So many times the ball went out of play on the far side with so many throw ins which we were often second best to.
The game was frequently broken up and we conceded too many free-kicks all night. Incredibly frustrating.

Can’t grumble about the result Accy were full value for all the points

On the way home. Soaking wet and bemused at the performance and way we went about it tonight.

Accrington probably have the tallest backline I’ve seen this season. They were giants! Despite that, we reverted to playing hopeful, direct balls forward to the attackers and it was apparent early on that we were not going to win any first contacts.

When you don’t win first balls, you’ve got to win the seconds and we failed to do that often enough tonight, either. Both CB & HK were in effective. McGuane tried but had little impact.

I was surprised Holland played. A wet Tuesday night in Accrington will not be his type of game for as long as he has a hole in his a**e.

Steve Seddon is not up to it. Either that, or he is totally devoid of any confidence. Whichever it is, we need to find a way to take him out the firing line - sharpish!

I do have concerns that our inability to sign legitimate defensive cover/competition for Seddon, along with no midfield enforcer (some kind of physical presence) for the Accy’s/wycombe’s/Wombles/Rotherham’s of the league May cost us this season.

I believe it’s something like 1 clean sheet in 19. This needs to be addressed - even if it means we have to sacrifice a little in attacking areas. We can’t keep conceding 2 goals a game.

Having said that, if we win Saturday then we’d most probably all have taken 6 points from 9 for the week. All is not lost.

If you haven’t got a ticket for Saturday yet, get one! Now is not the time to sit back and leave it to others - Saturday is the biggest game of the season to date.

(Fair play to the other 306 that travelled. Those conditions were horrendous!)

For those saying about lack of defenders we have had the following for CB’s this season, Mous, McNally, Moore, Brown, Thornley. Thornley gets recalled so Brown is brought in so still 2 players for each CB role plus Long.
Long gets injured, McNally has a personal issue, Brown gets injured. That is bad timing/luck.
You can’t sign loads of players incase we have a injury crisis.
It was only today people were saying this is the best squad we have had in years!

Didn’t see the game but sounds like one of those feeble away performances we sometimes put out. People here have surely been watching us enough to know we won’t win every week, especially with quite a few absences. Very pleased to see many of our rivals drop points.

Is it me or do some of our posters only ever watch us lose? We never see them after a win!!
People always have more to say after a defeat. Radio Oxford’s post-match phone-in was often almost caller-less after wins.

It’s the same everywhere.

Why is everyone scared of ROBBO even after the proformance like that tonight even radio Oxford is scared of him 😳

I won’t overreact to tonight’s result. A few thoughts though.

- Seddon had a very poor game
- Bran is much better playing deeper IMO. Would have him in the Gorrin role for remainder of the season, with Mcguane/Kane further forward
- Taylor needs a rest (Baldock Saturday pls)
- Holland just not good enough. Yes, he has some quality (rarely) but I really hope we don’t sign him permanently
- Conditions/pitch really not for us tonight, however shouldn’t be an issue really and we need to adapt
- agree about the defence. I go to every game now fully expecting to concede at least one goal. That needs to change quickly. Unfortunately I don’t see that ever changing under KR

Anyway, win Saturday and we are back on track. COYY’s

Mous is clearly not considered a reasonable option to start games. We therefore have three centre backs and two full backs at the club. Two of them being unavailable isn't bad luck, it's expected.

I actually have the sort of record this season where I'm beginning to think I genuinely won't watch the playoffs if we get there..
