Home Match Day Thread 11/9/2021 L1: OUFC V Wycombe Wanderers

Well I think the home atmosphere this season has, so far, been the best I’ve “heard” in 11 seasons.
For most of those the old “Oxford mail” stand crowd were a fickle bunch- not this season, they’ve got behind the team and as a result, the rest of the stadium has rocked.
I generally stand at the back of the East Stand and would disagree, promotion season L2 was best I've seen it. This season hasn't been particularly up there for me at all...

Was a bit pointless like their chant about winning the big day out 2-1. Durrrr no fans were allowed to go. Anyways the atmosphere was crap, I'm not sure what's gone on but we had louder fans in the conference days especially in the east stand. The variety of songs is not there anymore whats happened to the constant singing through out the match? Is it that alot have moved to the North stand so we don't have the buik behind the goal that sing? Away games we are one of the loudest in this league but at home we hardly make the place in to a fortress do we.
Personally I don’t think we’re that loud at away games either. Yeah, may be for the first 10-15mins, but after that it’s pretty quiet.

On another issue, Seddon doesn’t look as good as he was for the first few games. Looked so assured to begin with, but recently, especially the last 2 games he’s looked dodgy defensively, wingers seem to look like they’ve got the beating of him. He also doesn’t seem to be over-lapping lately either which is a shame as his crosses tend to be very good.

Also, as I’ve said previously, we missed out on getting another decent striker in which looks like it may ultimately cost us.

Are any fans that loud anymore? Ageing fan bases at football clubs have killed the atmosphere more than anything, a lot of reasons for that but I doubt it’s that much of a fun experience for older teenagers and lads in there 20s anymore, it’s groups of them that create an atmosphere and they can’t even sit/stand together in most grounds.

Football doesn’t want groups of young lads being boisterous really so nothing will change, the game was sanitised long ago and it will probably never go back. I go to watch the game and chat to my mates, might join in with the odd chant in the big games but at 42 I am not going to be going mental.

Bolton were, it’s the only away day I’ve done so far, and they obviously have far bigger crowds but it was far better than anything we muster except for the truly big games

Say right next to the segregation and despite a lot of weirdos thought Wycombe made a bit of noise at least, heard absolutely nothing from the East stand, not sure what we can do to get back to the atmosphere we had in the Appleton promotion season as since then it’s nosedived imo

The East Stand sounding quiet may be partly down to the poor Stadium design as away crowds/North Stand can sound quiet the other way.

I thought the same - Sedds was poor again for me. From all accounts this goes back to Bolton where he had a tough time and certainly at Wimbledon last week he was arguably at fault for two goals. He looked leggy yesterday and at times looked vulnerable versus McCleary.

Thought Thorniley had an indifferent game again, too. On the plus side McNally is looking a real find. Once he learns how to confidently
bring the ball out from the back - he is still pretty raw on the ball - he could develop into another excellent centre back.

Unfair on Anthony Forde - I would mark him up from a six to an eight. He had a fine game.

For me the most disappointing performer after the out of sorts Taylor was without doubt Gavin Whyte. Yes,
he is playing on the left so doesn’t look as comfortable but he needs to do far more on the ball and I would expect
an international to adapt better.

Brandon Barker - a right footer - but played primarily on the left side was far more of a threat and looks quicker than Whyte
from what I have seen. Mide Shodipo was also a very underrated wide man for us.

What we have is plenty of wide options in Holland, Whyte, Williams, Bodin , Cooper and Sykes but I’ve no idea
if Robbo confidently knows for sure who his first picks are. Which concerns me.

Something I’ve picked up on their forum, which goes some way to explain why the OB went into the Wycombe fans.

I was sat next to segregation (unfortunately, full of clowns) through out the game a black steward was telling people to calm down and towards the end of the game a moron behind me shouted at him "f**k off you golliwog" I turned and challenged him and to my surprise a black guy was stood near him and was also challenging him. I've give a statement to the police etc.....

Well done Bazza, challenging and reporting it. Bravo!

Why didn’t they just roll him off the pitch for treatment ? Those sort of knocks are normally dealt with on the sidelines, he wasn’t knocked out or anything yet somehow managed to get himself from the centre circle where the incident took place to within 3 yards of the touch line before keeling over as if he’d been taken out by a hitman !

Embarrassing.
