Every player you just named was unknown to us at some point? Didn’t see you complaining when Browne/Holland and Barker signed. Didn’t see you complaining when unknown Shodipo was banging in the goals for us…
I will always support any player we sign, that's not my point!

Generally, I’m not a fan of signing ex-players on loan who keep us waiting, so missing out on other targets. Shodipo was not our first choice, we got lucky!

Just for clarity my personal preferences for recruitment would be:

Permanent signings rather than loans.
Younger players with resale value over older ones.
Robust players instead of ones with injury issues.

Yeah but I didn’t make the first post did I. Strangely I wasn’t sat with my DICTAPHONE ready to play it back word for word so I could get your approval. I was sat in a non league football clubhouse enjoying a few pints with some fellow yellows fans who’d taken the opportunity to come & say hello to team on their Bournemouth tour & chat about the new season. I in fact only commented because the other poster who mentioned this first was called out to be making it up, which obviously is not the case as I was there when it was being said.

Could have been someone from the club on a wind up. Who knows. But it was said.
Use your fingers like everyone else 😀

I may be proved wrong but apart from McGuane the other players mentioned on here are ok signings but not stand out signings
Williams and Bodin(if fit) are good players but if we want to go up we need very good players
This is where the takeover talk led us to believe there was more money available and it’s not as much as we think
Robson will go to Ipswich as they have a lot to spend plus Ashton is good at pitching the club he works for
Wigan are making a big move and have real intent signing Wyke is a big statement
Rotherham Sheffield Weds and Wycombe can pay big money plus Sunderland have money to spend
We will have to hope for a solid start and no injuries just to stay in touch

Saving this post for when Robson signs for us, and Wigan are in administration again in January, because they’re paying Wyke 10k a week. We would be going MENTAL if we were paying a player that much money, in such uncertain times! They clearly haven’t learned from their mistakes..

The thing is, Wigan were shite last season, so they need to go all in. We don’t. We have the foundations of a quality team, so we need to add a few top quality players to what we already have.

Sunderland have spent big for years and stayed down, while the likes of Coventry and Wycombe got 'promoted'.

Due to the nature of the Championship divide, 5 teams are usually guaranteed to outspend us, but at least 2 of them won't get promoted regardless.

We have a stable group of players coming into the start of pre-season, something we've really not had since Mapp left. Teams like Burton, Wigan and Ipswich are doing their big business now because they're behind us, and need the bodies in the door.

Just because the Wykes and Pigotts of this league are being brought in now, doesn't mean there's not other equally great players available to come in and strengthen us.

Permanent signings rather than loans.
So, youd rather we never saw:

Kemar Roofe
George Baldock
Marcus Browne
Marcus McGuane
Brandon Barker

Along with Shodipo and many others…

Personally I’d like a blended approach, with a few top quality loans each season of players we’d never be able to get otherwise, who will be of an ability level too high for the league we’re in, and who we might have a chance of getting later on.

It’s going to be a tough league next season, Ipswich’s recruitment looks particularly good so far and Sheffield Wednesday have kept some top Championship players. Ultimately though there’s not going to be a massive variation in quality from one year to the next in League One.

We managed 6th last year, have lost key players in three positions since, but have retained and added what 20 players? Our shopping list must be shorter than pretty much every club’s in the league.

My expectation right now is that we’ll improve at left back and out wide, struggle to replace Atkinson with quite the same quality, and start with a largely top 6 squad. The positive thing for next season is that maybe barring some back up full backs (or extra wingers who can be forced to play there) the squad will largely be in place, fully fit and known to each other by the start of the season. A better August and I can’t see why we shouldn’t make the playoffs again. I suspect some bigger clubs with more money will take the top two as they usually do.

The comparison of McGuane with Baptiste is a worrying one.
Hope he’s not in the treatment room quite as much!

We are yet to make that marquee signing-loan or permanent.

Williams and Bodin have little or no resale value but have experience.

Quite a few of our rivals have played 2 or 3 friendlies already, hope we don’t send out an 'undercooked' team at the start of this season.

KR considers us ‘underdogs’ compared to the likes of Ipswich, Pompey, Charlton, Wednesday, Rotherham and Bolton. Is he wrong?

Very happy to have signed those players on a permanent deal, we might have made a few bob like we did with Roofe.
Hopefully we will again with McGuane.

Crucial thing for me is that the LB and CB are in the building ASAP. We can't go into the first game with a back 4 that doesn't know each other. Thankfully, it sounds like we're close to at least one of the two, if not both.

I'm really surprised by the cash being thrown about by some teams. Wigan, Burton, Ipswich will all be expected to be up there given the money spent, Sunderland and Wednesday still have promotion chasing quality teams, Lincoln aren't far off either. Wycombe, Charlton and Rotherham will all be thorns in the side again. Pompey seem to be dropping off a little in terms of money spent but I wouldn't be surprised if they're still in the mix. That's before considering your usual mid table stalwarts who could make a push like the Gills, Shrews and Fleetwood. I think it's going to be a really tough season, even with our team mostly staying together this year.

The only solace I can see is that I think the three that came down are weaker than the three that went up, certainly weaker on paper than Hull and PBoro, so perhaps the fight for top two will be a little tighter too.

Of course we’d rather have sighed all those players on a permanent deal, but that’s not possible. The choice is between not having them at all, or having loans - or I guess not having loans but instead signing other (presumably worse) players on a permanent deal… that wouldn’t be better I don’t think!

Loans are now a common place occurrence, it’s how to use them efficiently in terms of team building is the art, which is difficult, we have had some really good players , and of course the complete opposite as well.
For key positions I would like their players to be our own and the loan system to bulk out the team, it’s interesting that none of last seasons loans have been linked to us

I’m in two minds. We seen to have a more settled squad with less spots to fill & a good pre-season unlike last year. But it was also mentioned during the foray to Wimborne Town that despite the board putting a significant amount more into the playing budget recently we’ll still sit lower in the budget table this year than last year. And that teams are spending big, with the example given of Wigan who are paying recent signing Charlie Wyke £12k+ a week. I suspect KR’s comment yesterday about OUFC thriving on being underdogs is somewhat related to the financial clout a lot of clubs have over us this year. I guess when teams are paying silly money that narrows the market somewhat.

Be interesting to see what magic the recruitment team can do! Good loans will probably be key to competing above our budget.

I wouldn’t disagree with any of that. I’m hoping that a settled squad allows us to hit the ground running, and get a step ahead of clubs with larger budgets who have had big summer turnovers - Ipswich, Wigan, Portsmouth...

We have lost two clubs with bigger budgets (Posh, Hull) but replaced them with Wednesday and Rotherham. Wigan would certainly jump above us in the budget table, Ipswich and Charlton would already be above us but would now be further ahead.

I suspect we’ve dropped a few places but still have the budget and circumstances to target the playoffs.

I agree all signings are a gamble loan or permanent but you were being a bit selective.

I just glad we didn’t sign these players on loan first:

Rob Atkinson
Rob Dickie
Tariq Fosu
Gavin Whyte
Marvin Johnson

As I said I maybe proved wrong and I hope I am, but my main point was about more investment and the fact that other clubs will still be able to attract players ahead of us.
I should add Charlton to my original list
Regarding Robson if it’s a choice between Ipswich and us they appear to have more money to spend on salaries so I believe he will go there

Wow ! You must have mentioned about 15 teams who could challenge, there only 24 in the division ! With all these 'big' teams they can't all win and be up there. Something has to give, not least when they all play each other and with so many contenders there will be a 'big' team v a 'big' team virtually every other week.
