Seeing as Plymouth gave him an offer, it would suggest he’s got more to give, even at 34. Manning wants experience and we need bodies so I can see it happening.

Assume he's after a two year deal, otherwise why would he turn down a chance to stay at Plymouth and play in the Championship?

Yeah, he's old. But noone started more games for Plymouth than him last season. Clearly still a top defender at this level.

Exactly what I was thinking. Who can blame him at his age?

wow good signing ...and the rumour mill seems to be in overdrive for us...if we can convert half the players we are rumoured to be in for we are in for 'one hell of a season boys'

Even if he is still good, would still be an odd one for us to sign. I tend to think we're after players who will gain in value.

I suppose you could dilute that slightly by asking why Bristol Rovers are the front runners.

I don’t want to crap all over this one by any stretch - I’m fairly indifferent about it. I just want the best Oxford side possible and due to the state of the current squad, that will mean a player or two without much to offer long term but will staple us together now while we get our s**t together.

Sensible one to look at, certainly.

I don't think we'll pay (or should pay) fees for anyone other than younger players with potential that could grow in value.

But free transfer signings to complement the young talent with a couple of seasoned and reliable veterans to improve us in the immediate short term? I see no problem with that.

The only issue I would have with Wilson (assuming I've remembered correctly who he is) is that we're already well stocked with players with his skill set - solid, strong, reliable defenders with limited speed and/or ballplaying ability. Moore, Brown and Findlay can all do that. Negru looks like he might be in that vein as well.

What we really need when we're looking for defenders this summer is a) Specialist full-backs that can defend competently but also get up and down the pitch effectively, and b) Ball-playing CBs in the Dickie/McNally/Atkinson mould.
I don't think (though someone correct me if I'm wrong) that Wilson is either of those things......

Yeah, I'd have no trouble with us signing him at all. I just didn't think it was the sort of signing the club would be going for. I could easily be wrong.

Maybe he is a replacement for Findlay? Perhaps Manning doesn’t want to have a centre half who can’t pass a ball at the back?

We were bad last season, I don’t think it’s a case of bringing a couple of players in to compliment a decent team, Manning himself said he would like players in every position, some will be cover but I have a feeling a very decent numbers will be starters.
