The other thing aren't Italy supposed to their strengths? What were you expecting England to go all out attack and give a side who hadn't lost a game in 30 a proper hiding?

We were playing against a superior team, I think the first half we played really well and probably should have gone a bit more aggressively at Italy. Second half they were always going to come at us, they were never going to lie down and accept defeat.

The change in momentum for me was when Henderson came on for Rice. We started to midfield and verrati and jorginho were allowed time to get the ball to Insigne and Chiesa the danger men.

Well in goal and defence I agree they are better but attacking wise we had the better options overall just a shame our manager got euro 96 syndrome.

get through the group then as soon as a half decent team plays us we will defend the whole game and lose. exactly the same as world cup in 2018 and euros of 2021.southgate is not proactive and hes not even reactive.

Rarely do I read messages from a single poster on here that consistently defy logic or common sense. You are the exception. Your world is very simple, isn't it? not like you think like that at all is it? how about you talk to some people too. its a pretty pointless exercise trying to argue with the left as they basically ignore everything that would ever prove them wrong, but you know that already.

I think you've got it Pete. Southgate was totally right wing except when we played Scotland (he couldn't make his mind up about which wing he should be), but then was totally left wing yesterday.

Same as Cameron, really--I really had no idea how left wing he was until he was against Brexit. He must have switched sides without telling anyone the day he decided to have the referendum. Although, sneaky bastard that he was, given that he was paving the way for Brexit to happen, maybe he was a right winger in left winger's clothing while pretending to be right wing.

Damn, it's not quite as cut and dried as I'd imagined.

Are you very young?
The only reason that I ask is that you don't appear to have seen England much pre Southgate and what huge strides we have made in the past few years.
As Lineker said last night, for the first time in decades we are competitive against the best Countries in the World.

Yes, certainly not the most exciting or individually talented English side I’ve seen but maybe the strongest and hardest to beat. We beat Germany and Croatia , drew with Italy and got to the final - blimey, I’m actually looking forward to the World Cup rather than just assuming we’ll be rubbish. It certainly beats being knocked out by Iceland

i wouldnt say we are competitive when it comes to the big games at all, in fact i think we are far worse in those games. Weve never been so defensive as we are now. plenty of times in the past we were unlucky in games and absolutely went out to actively win those games.

Yes, for 55 years we’ve actively looked to win those games... And failed, often miserably!
We have a young and dynamic team that are very hard to beat.
We have been to a WC semi-final, followed by a Euro final.
For a team that is not very competitive in big games, we seem to have done pretty well recently.
The wait goes on for an actual trophy but I believe that this group is almost ready.

and we failed miserably under Southgate in those important games.We wont win anything under Southgate.
 
Aside from obvious disappointment my only critic would be trying too be to clever on penalties and putting Sako last - a 19 year old with just too much pressure. What took the taint of the incredible performance was the number of football "fans" who are nothing more than thugs and the disgraceful behaviour throughout from keyboard warriors. Calling a crying young German girl a "slag" and punching kids to get them out of their seats makes me never want to support England again. Makes me so angry - we have bouncers a nightclubs yet fat old men acting as stewards which allowed it to happen - all down to money again. Think we need to have more cameras, identify the scum, and take their passports off them and ban /jail them. Arent we better than this because this is the legacy that will be left behind? Not one of them would stand up to a black guy and abuse him to his face. We also need to look at scum "media" like "The Sun"/Priti Patel and the nasty party which makes these actions "all right". If you were one of them - FU
