I wouldn’t sack Southgate but he should provide an answer as to why he did not insist Sterling take one before a couple of kids with limited tournament experience. Something is amiss if your supposed player of the tournament and first pick - and a free scoring forward player - is scared to death to have a free hit from 12 yards against a static goalkeeper.

Weak management.

I would argue that weak management would be publicly saying why Sterling didn't take one. That would be a throwing under the bus moment if ever I saw one. Southgate has been better than that. He's taken the decision for the penalty decisions.

But hey, the minority want to keep kicking him for achieving something that no manager has done since 1966 but there you go. England fandom for you.

Nope, I'd be shocked, however, if Sako had ever taken one.

Grealish though I would have thought would have put up a hand?

That's my point. Southgate should have insisted his most lauded player in this tournament, Sterling, took one ahead of a quaking kid. Not too sure Grealish would have done any better, he wouldn't instill me with confidence from the spot.

You just knew that the moment we’d lost some people would start criticising- even though we were the width of the post away from winning.

s**t penalties though!

I don't go along with the manager forcing a player to take a spot kick in a major final. I'd hope that we had at least practiced some beforehand and the players who stepped up had shown some sort of aptitude for it in training. (noting it's not the same of course, nowhere near close).

Was Calvert-Lewin on the bench? I'd certainly question why he wasn't brought on to take one. It's also worth noting that, for argument's sake, Stirling scored the fifth penalty, we still would have needed at least one more taker. I've seen Stirling singled out in a few places for not taking a kick, just think it's unfair on a player who pretty much got us out of the group stage on his own.

Sadly the racist abuse kicked off on Social Media, by the usual morons no doubt.

It’s time these platforms sorted their s**t out.
Someone took a screenshot of a racist post on Twitter before the poster deleted it. It was traced back to estate agents Savills. Savills said they would investigate when their offices open. So on the heels of an estate agent prosecuted and sacked for abusing Chris Whitty we have another moron from the same profession about to be sacked and, hopefully, prosecuted.

I hope the OB can find these racist scum of our boys and lock these C***s up, there’s no place for this s**t and our games.

That will never be tackled and if it was reference to
My obscenities towards that scum then you can juss my a**e if it wasn’t then ignore

I saw the photo of that bloke with a flare up his a**e, but I didn't know putting a thin French sauce on it was a thing too. An alarming prospect.

Not really seen it mentioned anywhere but page 26 of a Euros final thread from a mid-ranking League 1 football team forum is where it should go - how good was Jordan Pickford this tournament? Bollocked his defence like Schmiechel Snr in his prime, top saves throughout, two belting penalty saves in the shootout and so close to another, let in only two goals and let no one down.

If he's reading this, which I'm certain he is, well done, fella.

Well said

From someone who was lucky to be in attendance - gutted.

Not because we lost, it was the manner of the performance after getting the perfect start.

Should have used that and kicked on and went for Italy when they were very much on the back foot. The crowd were up, we would have driven the boys forwards if they’d have only been given the licence to believe in themselves.

One thing I noticed from seeing it live and to compare it with Italy was Southgate was mostly always on his own. Very rarely did you see the back room team alongside him on the touch line. Mancini had plenty of advice and support from his team. Italy were very together on and off the pitch.

I like that in a team.

Fair result. Once the game settled down they dominated as we let them.

Very strange subs and the crowd sensed the unease in which Southgate was managing the game.

Ultimately it came down to pens and that was that.

If your keeper saves 2 pens from 5 after you score the first you should be winning that.

It is what it is.

Must also say the stewards and police were shocking. Must have been thousands who gained entry without tickets. This led to a very nasty feel to the atmosphere away from the game. Lots of small pockets of trouble too. A return to the bad days.

Fair enough Saka, and Sancho are youngsters but don't portray Rashford who took the worst penalty, as a youngster he is 23 and has played 46 times for England he's not a kid.

I just hate those soft stuttering penalties!! Put your foot through it! You could tell those penalties would be missed from the run ups, never mind Saka's stricken face as he realised it was his turn.

Ridiculous comment. Rashford took the best penalty of the three missed ones. 4 or 5 inches to the right and that's the side netting and no keeper on the planet is getting near it and Donarumma is never getting that low down so quickly to turn it aside. Sancho and Saka's were awful spot kicks. Ideal height for keeper, too far inside the post (keeper was nowhere near full stretch), lacked pace and were telegraphed by their run up. Out of interest, I called every kick correctly last night bar Maguires which I said would go high but opposite corner. Best of the lot was Kane's, it was easy to see where he was putting it but keep it low, hard and with pace and they just don't get saved.
