Away Match Day Thread +++ 21/09/19 L1: Lincoln City v OUFC +++

Karl Robinson talking to former Lincoln and Headington United defender Alan Hall pre-match at Sincil Bank.
Hall played under Harry Thompson in the 1950’s in the Southern League.

Alan’s last match was on Boxing Day 1956 - a 0-6 thrashing by Bedford at the Manor (courtesy of Rageonline stats).

He waited almost 63 years for redemption.

Robbo is a class act in this respect. He’s always put emphasis on buying in to the club, the city and it’s heritage and there’s so many fly by night managers who wouldn’t give a s*** about this side of it.

Indeed. He’s good at the PR aspect of the club’s history but actually walks the walk too.

6 goals. 7 shots sounds as if we put everything in. We actually had 13 shots.
An intersting read , although I think that things are just a little more nuanced than has been suggested.

7 shots on target. Based on the quality of chances we created we should have scored once...yesterday was very good but that won’t be happening each week!

Impressed with lots of things yesterday. Our defence looked impenetrable, with Mous man of the match for me. Obviously our attack was on fire. People around me couldn't believe when Fosu's third and Mackie's hit the back of the net - we all thought their shots were heading high and wide.

And a couple of shouts for Lincoln too. Their stewards were helpful and fair, allowing a few lads to stand at the back of our aisle because they couldn't find seats and making it clear on entry that it was free seating so no-one was insisting on sitting in their ticketed seat.

And as for the Lincoln 'ultras' - even the most blinkered away fans must have been impressed. Noise and colour even when 0-4, 0-5, 0-6 down at home!

This one will live long in the memory.
Glad you enjoyed that one Pete. It sounds like everything just clicked. Fosu looks like a great acquisition for us. I’m sure some players won’t feature for West Ham. I hope we can get another good result on Saturday against Gillingham. This season looks to be very promising

Good to hear. Results like this are once in a generation and absolutely vital we build on it, not so much against West Ham but Gillingham next Saturday is massive in terms of not wasting today’s efforts.
I wouldn’t be expecting a classic next week against Gills. They’ll have seen this result and will probably set up with all 11 behind the ball. It’ll be about us trying to break them down with them having the occasional counter I reckon. Hopefully we can get an early goal to open the game up.

Fine Margins!

As great as yesterday was, I don't think it yet makes us world beaters, but neither did I think we were awful beforehand. However, there were a couple of factors that I think made the real difference.

We took our chances

7 shots on target, 6 great goals. But we've had similar chances in other games but not made them count. Against Bolton, Henry gets the ball on the edge of the box and puts it out of reach of the keeper only to see it hit the post. Fosu in a similar position finds the bottom corner. Woodburn has a shot blocked and it falls to Henry to volley in, where as we've missed the second ball dozens of times in the box before. Fosu shots from distance and it dips in. Against Coventry the keeper makes a couple of great saves in similar situations.

Scoring at crucial times

We scored early to settle the nerves. A number of times we've come out the blocks well but not made this count. Yesterday we put our market down early. We then scored just before half time and then twice very quickly after. These goals killed the game, but it could have been very different had we only led by 1 at around the hour mark.

Leadership

Mous and Mackie offer so much more than just their playing contributions. Mous leads the team, marshalls the defence and keeps everyone focused in the middle. Mackie does the same from the top of the pitch. Our shape and discipline were much better because of this and it allows others to focus on playing their game. Gorrin didn't have to worry about what was happening behind him and had a fantastic game breaking up play and not allowing Lincoln to settle in the ball. Brannagan and Woodburn picked when to go and when to hold and looked a class pairing in the middle. Playing a little deeper gave Woodburn more time and I can see him scoring more from this position than in the 10, but that all comes with discipline. Fosu played with more freedom and confidence and you could see Mackie talking to him throughout the game, getting his head up when things didn't work and a pat on the back when they did.

Belief

Robinson stuck with the team that started at the beginning of the season and showed that he believed in the players he had. Although Woodburn sat deeper, the team was set up very similar to how we've set up in the 4231 but it enabled the space to bring the best out of the players. Once they started playing with confidence and freedom you could see the belief in them and each other return. We have some real quality throughout the team and we have the opportunity to start moving in the right direction in the league.

Wednesday we get a free hit in the cup before going again against Gillingham next weekend. A win there are suddenly things are looking a lot more promising in the league and I can gloat a little more having predicted 10 points from these 4 games!!!

It’s funny how football works out. Everyone was bitterly disappointed that we missed out on a goal glut against Bolton’s youth team like others had done earlier in the season but then we get it in the very next match. If the results had been 0-6 v Bolton and 0-0 against Lincoln everyone would have been very happy with the last week.

The strangest stat from the game was that we won only 1 corner (compared to Lincoln's 4).
