It is clear that KR went after James Vaughan, and on Tuesday thought that the deal was done (the Matty Taylor handshake moment). However - and some are saying this was directly down to Vaughan's agent - he went to Portsmouth, presumably for more money.
It is hard to blame KR for this. He did manage to sign Sinclair, whether as an alternative or as the second of his two intended targets.
What this does show is the gap that now exists between the Championship and League 1. Two big clubs by any estimation (Sunderland and Portsmouth) have spent a great deal of money, seeing this as necessary to ensure their return to the Championship. Please also note the crowds these clubs get every week. Another club, Luton, which is slightly larger than ours, has also done similarly.
I admire KR for his honesty this morning. It would be easy for him to have said nothing, and to allow us to think he had not been backed by Tiger.
KR is at fault for placing far too much trust in Smith In August. The fact that Smith was not good enough, coupled with the unfortunate (but not out of the ordinary) injury to Obika put us where we are.
