Nelson

I think what was being referred to is that Nelson will see it as a disappointing few seasons for him personally (aside from a couple of highlights here and there). He joined an up and coming squad managed by Appleton that was playing (and winning) good football.

For just over a year now (across two seasons) he's now been with a team bordering on relegation from L1 with a management structure that seems devoid of any plan at all.

Hemmings, Hoban etc. were disappointing signings for the club and fans as they never really worked out. Neither player can be particularly disappointed personally as they were never good enough.... Completely unlike Nelson who, along with Eastwood should be plying their trade well away from OUFC in our current state.

It wasn't particularly professional of either Nelson or the management RE the interview but at least he's still playing (unlike O'Dowda and Johnson).

Spot on.

Also, this was against the team he left!!

In addition he showed frustration at losing which shows he still cares.

Supposedly joining Sunderland along with Tony McMahon, according to there fans

Symptom of the way the club seems to be admistered at the moment that Curtis is still shown as captain on the club's website

What would you think would be in the best interest of Curtis Nelson, not the club, but Nelson himself? If he refuses to sign a new contract with OUFC, but allows the club to sell him to a bigger club, the club is financially better off. Now think about this for a second, Curtis in talks with his agent knows that there are a number of clubs wanting to sign him. If he waits until his contract has run out, he will be able to negotiate a massive signing on fee which will go to his bank not OUFC. If your in the same position would you jump ship now or in 6 months knowing you will be receiving a large amount of cash ? There is no loyalty in football so money in his bank account will be a great driver for him to hold off a move.

If we lose Nelson i just don’t see us getting a upgrade in replacement unfortunately with the position we are in now we will struggle to get better quality we wanted to bring in before the transfer window with us losing 3 in the bounce & now back in the relegation zone again

Well, shortly before the last (Jan) window he picked up a very serious injury so if he gets the chance of a big money move in the next couple of weeks he would be mad not to take it.

No hate towards Nelson from me. MApp and DE must’ve sold the club to him and now those two have trotted off he’s under the stewardship of Tiger and DE. I think I’d fancy jumping ship too!

He’s going to be sold to make up the shortfall for paying £250k for him. In terms of short term finances, better that than seeing him leave for a free. I don’t know what the financial cost of relegation will be though …

Anyway, a replacement will be needed and I think I know the an experienced head who’ll run through a brick wall or two …

In defence of Nels, he’s been trotted out into Yellow Player today and gives a much more measured and apologetic interview than the Radio Oxford farce yesterday. Williams also takes some of the blame for sending him out to be interviewed post-match

(Oh, and as much I’d love him to stay I suspect he’ll be departing this month and hold no ill-will against him for it. Fantastic CB to watch on his day. I’ve enjoyed his time at our club and sad that, like Appleton, the size of his ambition and ability substantially out-strips our own)

I was under the impression that KR decides who gets sent out for interviews

Fair play to him for today’s interview. He may be off next week, he may be off in the summer, but he is giving his all, unlike some others in our team. Probably our best player in the last 2 home defeats.

Who isn’t trying?

Williams acknowledges in the interview that it was him that sent Nels out (as it was his old club apparently) - and also admitted that it was the wrong decision

I can see the point that we were getting players to drop down a level, get good game time in a decent team, and then move on with everyone's blessings if they left amicably. See Roofe, Lundstram, JonJoe Kenny.

Nelson has already had one bad time out injured, and playing at the bottom end of League 1 presumably wasn't in his career plans. It's a bit of a risk to stick out for a free transfer at the end of the season just in case he does get another injury.

Still, if Dunkley is still getting regular game time at Wigan in the Championship, surely Nelson should be up there too - I thought that was too much of a step-up in class for Chey, but what do I know?

He gets a signing-on fee in either case, whether now or later.

Whether United get a fee for transfer of his registration doesn’t affect this.

It affects the size of it. It’s the difference between someone going, say, you can have 20k because I’m already paying 150k for you, or you can have 75k because I’m paying nothing else.

Be surprised if football clubs were quite that liberal with their money. I think they’d have a set signing-on fee ceiling in mind and would negotiate up to that regardless of what they’d paid in transfer fees.

I would however accept that the signing-on fee always used to be a percentage of the transfer fee paid, so your original statement is correct for that reason.

Fair play to them both. Tbh after a 3 goal defeat at an old club I think anyone would be terse in their replies.
And over the last few matches CN has been one of the few to put a bit of a shift in. I hope he stays until the end of the season.
