Current Player #8 Cameron Brannagan

We should sign him back on as hes the most important player we have and is worth more than the money we can get for him.
Exactly this. Some players aren’t worth the wage they get paid, in Cam’s case then I’d say he does earn his wage for what he brings. Also, wages are only going 1 way in football so it won’t be many years where Cam’s wage is just above the average wage of a league 1 footballer.

But then he'll moved on to Mortimer, Whitehead and Brannagan; gone fishing.

There is a hop on - hop off provision that will hopefully meet your positivity needs!
Ooo I’m not sure about that!
Some permanent residents of the positive bus seem to resent others “hopping off” when the bus seems to be heading for trouble.
For me, the Reality Bus is the one to board. I’m much happier travelling with those occupants, personally.

Oh go on then.

What is the average wage for a League 1 footballer? How does Brannagan compare to that currently?

Average wages are difficult to compare as there will be a lot of players on their first professional contracts and a few loanees on huge PL contracts. But if you're looking at established first team players such as Cam, then it's worth looking at the top 100 earners, and they average a little over £7k per week. Generally our top earners are on a little more than that with mid earners around the £5k mark. Brannagan is significantly above that, but I'm not sure it's quite as high as the £12k that is often quoted.

Either way, Brannagan is one of the highest earners in league one and will be for some time.

He's one of the only Championship ready players in our squad and he's seemingly on Championship wages to reflect that. We came very close to losing him to Blackpool (if KR is to be believed) and his "eye-popping" new deal was the result. Whether we think it was over the odds is moot. The money men were prepared to pay that to keep him and that is what matters. Whether that approach comes back to haunt us as a club is another matter entirely.

Had he gone to Blackpool, who knows if he'd have helped them become an established Championship club by now, but it would've shortened the odds of that considerably imho.

I'm sure KR promised him the moon on a stick to stay here and enthused him with his plans to build a squad around him that we're serious contenders. Unfortunately, actions spoke louder than words and we all know how that ended.

The fact that we're 2 managers down the track and Cam is still pulling up trees for us is testament to his honesty and commitment to the club.

I agree. And I've never been too worried about wages, it's always about value.

and with that in mind we possibly should be looking to sell him as from January 25 he goes for nothing or you accept that and let him run his contract down.

You're not going to sell Cam for the money - he turns 28 next month, and he's never played above League One. Blackpool were the only club to trigger his million pound release fee, and that was a couple of years ago when he still had more seasons of his prime left. The fee we would get for him would not make a significant impact on even our annual finances (honestly, right now, I think Tyler is the only player that could).

The only reason that you sell Cam is because he wants to go and give the Championship a crack before it's too late, and we feel we owe him that after six years of dedicated service (and we don't get promoted this season!)

Talk about tough to replace though, if we did. Second leading goalscorer, in double figures again, and more assists this season than any other two players in our squad combined!

Although allegedly paid twice as much as anyone else. So with good recruitment you could get two really effective midfielders for the price. (But would you?)

Being very fussy but didn't he actually get off the bench for Liverpool?

He isn't replaceable by one player is he though? He is essentially finishing his time here (if he does go) as a one man midfield, second top goalscorer, top assists and the real leader of the side. The only way to replace him is with an entirely new midfield, that is 3 players with the way Buckingham is setting up, which is pretty much a testament to his contribution here.

I will start this by saying CB is a fantastic player and I'd be very happy if he were to see out his career with us.

But I wonder what people were saying about Steve Biggins back in the day and what they said after John Aldridge got going.

I have a feeling Brannagan is more the Aldridge type player in this situation. I think you are being a bit hopeful in our ability to replace him with an upgrade in one player, he is one of the best players in the division.

Hopefully we can get a much better midfield unit in though, he is literally our midfield at the moment, whether he stays or goes we need to change that.
