Don't know, but the game was a lot slower back then so you might be able to get away with carrying a knock back then which you can't today. Bodies are being pushed harder, so things will break more often if you aren't careful.
As players’ pace has increased, I’d guess the increased reliance on skill to beat a player (rather than just running straight) means more lateral movement and more stress on ligaments, in particular.

As you can probably tell, I haven’t really got a clue.

Like everyone else, Matete has to prove himself on the pitch (especially with no competitive football in his legs this season...it's not an injury thankfully so he will have a different "getting match fit" routine than Goodwin). But on the face of it a fantastic signing...if you could pick anyone (within sensible reason) for the CM role we are lacking, he would probably be on 9 out of 10 people's lists at this level.

But yes, I remain of the opinion that we are just a little short up front and subject to the up-and-down nature of Des getting his style over to get to the very top this season. But playoffs? Why not!
Yes it was an injury that has kept Matete out . He picked up a knee injury on a pre season tour to the USA. It needed surgery and he only returned to training in December. His first squad inclusion was January 13th.
Hopefully that is OK now and we see the best of him soon.

Looking at what we’ve got now,

A very strong squad (when fit) with options to chop and change style and formations.

Really good work from Ed and everyone involved.

I still think, without that extra striker/forward we are weaker than most sides in this play off race! The hopeful side to me is looking at Gatlin to continue this burst of form and grow into the back end of the season!

(Also a rumour of a potential Baldock situation signing) but I’m not holding on to anything there… think it’s B*****s personally
Well isn’t 7 free in the squad numbers?

I think it’s been the strongest window we’ve had for some time - on the face of it.
I would have given it a 9, as the excellent (theoretical) quality level of the players, in relation to what was available to us, merits this score.
However, some niggles take it to an 8. Bennett and Goodwin are injured; goodness knows when Edwards will be back; we’ll reserve opinion on Matete until match fitness is clear.

All credit to Des, Ed and the owners. If the injury situation is kind to us, AND this squad clicks, we’ll be top 4.
Potentially, but that wasn’t hard following on from Karl’s reign!

There’s still some question marks surrounding injuries etc, so let’s wait and see. I would have felt slightly more optimistic if we had signed a proven striker, especially as we’ve been chasing one for nearly 2 years!

Browne!

Both Manning and Buckingham appear to have bought/signed loanees in positions where we obviously needed strengthening . With KR (particularly in the last 12 months) I often got the impression it was a case of seeing if he liked the look of players his favourite agents were punting- obviously very unkind of me, and |I am quite sure KR was far more intelligent in his approach.

I gave it a 7/10. I still think we are light in the forward areas, if we can get through to whenever some of Edwards, Browne and Murphy are back, without picking up any further injuries up there, then we may get away with it.

The encouraging thing for me was that we have clearly gone for players that we have needed for a very long time, which indicates that both Waldron and Buckingham are seeing what the rest of us have been. Of course there are limitations on how much you can do in January, but it's reassuring that we should be going into the summer window much better prepared when we'll also have a lot more room to manoeuvre.

We've got a lot of boxes ticked off and it's a world of difference from what we've been used to over the last few years. We've been crying out for a midfielder to do the dirty bits for a couple of years since Gorrin got injured and we have another option up front with Goodwin who gives us something different.

It was promising when 5 days into his reign and outside the transfer window we signed Joe Bennet rather than just shoving Brown out there until Leigh got back. It's how a normal club should operate but we'd become so conditioned to the whims of an idiot that it was a surprise to see us trying to fix areas that could cause us problems. We're better set than we were prior to the window but I wouldn't have minded another striker and the fact that a few of them aren't available to play immediately which isn't ideal. In isolation they were all worthwhile but we really could have done with some help over the last few weeks.

If nothing else it gives me confidence that we're going to build a proper, balanced squad in the summer when we get rid of some of the big wages that we're paying currently.

I do get all this "light in the forward area" stuff, but is it perhaps the case that Des sees things a bit differently, given his City Group experience?

Great window, for a January Ed has done extremely well.

If we are still after a striker, they've got to have been a free agent when the window closed. A little bit of pedigree is out there: Connor Wickham, Lys Mousset, Gary Madine, Troy Deeney, Josh Eppiah, Bobby Duncan, Caleb Chukwuemeka to name a few.

I feel a bit the same we have a lot up front. I only gave 7/10 because of the fact that we have agin gone for injured players. Other than that a good window.

This ☝️

Was having a similar conversation with a colleague yesterday regarding a new system being implemented in the company. As she phrased it "honestly god forbid we try to mitigate the possibility of a fire instead of putting them out all the time". Nice to see the club taking a proactive approach!

Des looked like a happy man in his pre-match interviews. No doubt he is very happy with the new players in. He also looks like he's had a couple of decent nights sleep too. #DesWatch

🤣

I love this club
