We knew between January 1st & January 7th that..

Mills was out for the season.
Browne was out for the season.
Edwards was out for the season.
Bodin was managing a serious injury.
Murphy was out for a while.
Beadle was getting recalled.
Perkins wasn’t good enough.
Gorrin (the clubs only DM) wasn’t good enough.

We proactively replaced Beadle with Cumming. Fair enough, that’s how we should be acting for a lot of our issues.

However adding a half fit Burey (played about 100 minutes of football since the summer), adding Goodwin (missing for a couple of weeks in a vital period) & adding Edwards (who we know is out till Easter at the earliest) is simply not good enough for a side trying to finish between 1st & 6th.

Des likes 4-3-3 with a 6 & two 8s which push into 10s rotationally..

So in an ideal world it’d be Marcus as the 6, Brannagan and Ruben in the 8s.

He’s gone to 3 at the back because the lack of wingers that are effective in that 4-3-3 formation.. he like them high and wide with the ability to beat a man. (Murphy,Brown,Edwards) but he hasn’t got that available atm. (Tyler likes to cut inside and play in half spaces)

So he’s resorting to 5 back to try get Stevens and now Leigh to hold width, which should allow Ruben and Tyler to play in those tigger spaces.

But unfortunately it’s not paying off atm!

With Burey it’ll help, and I think some Fellow on the right would also help and we’d see a more “Des” style of play
I agree with all of this, but not sure MM playing deeper should be ideal world. If we could find 2021 Alex Gorrin, then rotate the other 3 that’d be a very nice set up. Wingers will obviously help, a couple of those plus a CDM and we might still make the playoffs.

On writing this season off, I’d 1000% prefer us to sign one or two players who absolutely fit the right profile to kick us on over the next couple of years like Goodwin, than try and find quick fixes to maybe make the playoffs.

It does tell it's own story of what we are up against mind when Bolton with their absolutely nuts array of talent up front are looking to add Aaron Collins to it.

Charlton also. Ladapo, Collins, May, possibly JCH.

That’s why I think it’s utterly mental people are turning against Des.

He’s been given nothing to work with.

The only help he’s had since joining us has been replacing Beadle very quickly with a good keeper in Cumming & the signing of Bennett to cover for the loss of the best left back in the league Greg Leigh.

We’ve basically limped (quite literally) through January, with only an inferior quality goalkeeper swap and a half fit Burey added to the squad in terms of players actually available. We’ve got 6 points from 12 in the league (not bad all things considered but below expectations) and gone out of two cup competitions in embarrassing circumstances. Mostly the performances have been below par. We’ve continued to play the same negative way, lacked energy and pace and flogged the same players week in week out because we have no viable alternatives to improve the situation.

Yet a number of posters seem to think that by bringing in a couple more players by the end of the window it means our January dealings will have been successful. There’s no guarantee any further additions will be better than the ones we could have brought in at the start of January or that we’ll even get the ones we’ve been waiting for those dominoes to drop for. The month of January again slips by as if it doesn’t count!

Instead of making early Jan the time to make a statement and kick on with a serious promotion push, we have let a general air of malaise come down over the playing side and other things too it seems.

3 much needed points against promotion rivals tomorrow night might lift the mood somewhat, but another defeat will seem like the rot has set in, especially if those new faces are Perkins and Konate esque, rather than something considerably better. Here’s hoping for a much needed win and some serious quality added!

Not sure MPH was a direct replacement by any stretch, or that we even have two players of Poole and Robertson’s quality to lose.

It’s the volume that’s the issue for us more than the quality. We’re can’t just go and sign half a dozen more replacements and carry a squad of 35.

It would be nice if we picked a formation and recruited the players for it though. Then only signing a couple more might not be such an issue.
I think k our hands are tied a bit because of all the dead wood in the squad on good money. This still goes back to Robinson's incompetence. Big clear out in summer and see how it goes.

I don't buy the idea he's been given nothing to work with.

Our starting 11 on Saturday:

Cumming - young, but very experienced for his age. Over 130 appearances between L1 & L2
Brown + Moore + Leigh - all well established, good L1 defenders
Negru - young but we know he can perform and plenty of potential
Stevens - not very experienced
McEachran - personally don't rate him but experienced at this level and fairly well thought of at MK
Brannagan - best CM in the league ;)
Goodrham - made over 60 L1 appearances. Personally think he's a solid player with lots of potential
Rodrigues - one of the best perfomers in the NL last season, we all know he's a capable player
Harris - Again, personally don't rate him but lots of experience at a higher level

Only the players in bold are those who maybe aren't good enough - the rest are more than competent enough to be in a team/part of a L1 squad battling for promotion.

Interestingly, McEachran is a player Des thinks is good enough and Harris has been left till at least a couple of weeks as our main striker.

What is strange is that fans, every year, build up to January as the time we are going to show our hand and cement that playoff place. Every year we underwhelm, for whatever reason that may be.

It's probably the same at most clubs, but even back to the days of going for Onandi Lowe and ending up with Neville Roach, we just don't really "do" January.

You’re absolutely right, that’s why we’ve underperformed in January even in the matches we’ve won!

As you say, nobody really does. Fans cling onto the hope that it will bring a raft of new players that will change the season, but it never really happens.

I so much hope you’re right. But on past recent performances I‘m not expecting 3 points.

I think Des is trying to play a formation that needs a defensive mid, he’s tried McGuane who isn’t that player then reverted to McEachran who doesn’t have the legs for it. He’d like to play 433 but he hasn’t had two wingers.

I can understand why he’s made the mistakes he has to an extent, but think he’s shown he’ll struggle without “Plan A” being available to him.

I’d be surprised if we didn’t go to a back 4 on Tuesday and start Burey or we didn’t see at least another winger in this week.

A few people are now suggesting that McEachran and Thorniley are not up to it and Perkins wasn't either.
Presumably that was Mannings incompetence as part of this issue?

He's had Goodrham and Burey last couple of weeks. He's said we don't need another midfielder, which is incredibly concerning if the formation he wants to play requires a defensive minded midfielder.

I just really don't get what his plan is.
