Murphy too? He's been our most exciting player for some of the last few games (admittedly, that's not much to brag about), surprised he isn't worth thinking about keeping now we can actually get a tune out of him

0 goals and 5 assists from 35 League appearances across 17 months - and specifically 0 goals and 0 assists in his 6 appearances since his apparent resurgence.

I'm not hearing this tune.

I kind of know what you mean. On one level I like McEachran. He inserts a lot of control. On the other hand he reminds me of myself when I'm playing 6 a side on a week night (not comparing my ability obviously). I'm in my 40s and know I can only run to a certain speed otherwise I will ping a hamstring or calf. He looks like he is restraining himself when playing because he knows his body will not necessarily keep up if he doesn't.
I'm not a massive fan of McEachren, You can tell he's played at a good level, and he doesn't make many mistakes- but I don't think he does much apart from keeping things ticking over. He reminds me of Lewis Bate, but with dodgy hamstrings. He's not a game changer. Put it this way, Smyth was MOM and won us the game yesterday on his second (?) start for us, and McEachren has never done while he's been here. I'd be happy enough if he moved on in January.

If you play a simple pass to a teammate who then goes on a mazy run past 4 opponents and smashes a shot in the top corner from 35 yards, you get an assist. If you sprint down the wing, absolutely skinning your fullback and put a brilliant cross in which Ruben Rodrigues somehow contrives to put over the bar from inside the box, you don’t. Murphy has done a lot of the latter. He’s played very well in his last few appearances, that’s unarguable despite the lack of G/A.

We pay him a very big wage and we have got a handful of games out of him in a year and a half and he isn't available to play again, obviously a good player but for me we can get two players in for the money we pay him.

It makes more sense to do both. The problem hasn't been that we've had injuries, every team has them. It's that we've had them whilst having a completely threadbare squad.

As always, you want to make it very binary. This is not about the starting 11 and no successful side in this league limits itself in this way. This is about building a squad, one transfer window at a time. We can afford to bring in "better" players whilst also having others around that might just make a vital difference.

Henry was praised when he came on against Cambridge in a little cameo. No one is suggesting that we build a team around him but to dismiss any potential contributions are shortsighted.

Gorrin is very limited in what he can do. He was before his knee injuries and is more so now. But 1 nil up, ten minutes to go away to Portsmouth, Brannagan on a booking, could Gorrin be the player to keep the 3 points? And the value of those points could far outweigh the wages he earns between now and May.

It's got nothing to do with a small club mentality, it's the exact opposite.
A threadbare squad is really a problem of your own making if you continue to hand deals out to people like Gorrin. I appreciate a lot of it is luck but you are dicing with it a bit if you keep players like that around and we have loads of them, our squad carries far more than is necessary. I'm not saying have none, I'm saying have less. Much less. I understood why Manning added him to the group (again, to cover a shortage of bodies) but I can't see any sense in a renewal now that we have January to move things around. You won't convince me that Gorrin will make a 'vital difference' for anybody but especially ahead of, say, a non-league holding midfielder in his early 20's with a bright future in the EFL. The scenario you mention is fine, but why does it need to be the ever-unreliable Gorrin? Is he sharp enough to trust with such precious minutes as what you describe? There's as much chance he's injured for the game against Portsmouth as he is to be the hero. We should be trying to lower our risk tolerance, not extend it.

Henry was praised against expectation. If he was a new signing people would wonder what on Earth he was doing here. He was praised because we're desperate for players and after months of absence he managed to come on in our time of need and waddle around for us for 15 minutes. He's a likable chap but for God's sake, he was stiff as a post. He's done. Time to move on. We're trying to get to the Championship, are we really applauding and encouraging the inclusion of stalwarts that can hardly bend at the knee because it balances things? Crazy.

Surely the point is that Henry is under contract so won't be going anywhere, whereas we have the option of releasing Gorrin. I'd be happy to do that provided we replace him with a similar but better alternative.
Yeah I appreciate Henry unlikely to go anywhere for now. But I’d like to see us in no way dependent on him, even for 10 minutes.

This is fast becoming the forum's new 'Eastwood had more to do (and less protection) than Beadle' - a ploy to defend poor contributions.

How many times has the scenario you paint above actually happened? Murphy has electric pace but more often than not he skins his man and then fumbles it into the next one or scuffs the shot/cross. That isn't Rodrigues fault any more than it's Moore's fault that Eastwood can't get down to stop shots from distance.

For comparison, why is it that Mills has had 7 assists this season? And a goal? Surely there are occasions where he's been let down by poor finishing too? That's the life of a winger.

Sometimes you have to make things happen - as evidenced by a kid, playing in defence, making his 1st start of the season yesterday.

With a bit of luck I doubt we will see much more of him, a couple of players back and a couple of signings and he isn't getting on the bench. Been a good player for us si i don't mean it as an insult its just that his time has gone here, I wouldn't be suprised if he retires from playing at the end of this season.

Even he didn’t look happy to be thrown on at Derby. He got thrown around like a dog toy. The game was much too quick and aggressive for him. He looked fragile and uncomfortable and there was a moment in the box he could’ve shot and he got closed down but he looked terrified to get clattered. Nobody benefits from relying on him. 5 mins at the end of a 3-0 win to help keep the ball? Testimonial vibes. Fine. Any more than that is just daft.

That's not really true, Murphy's shooting has been bad but he's put in some great balls. The goal he set up for McGuane in the cup is one of my favourite moments this season.
