Transfer News January 2023 Transfer window thread

Any potential signings who might have watched that game tonight you'd be excited to join us the crowd was on form the team was well up for it the only thing lacking was goal threat

Get that striker signed play like we did tonight more often and we will be fine we might even make the play offs (but let's not run before we can walk)

I’ll have what you’ve been drinking.

I've said it before but I'm more and more convinced that if we could sign a pacy, strong central striker who's 'too good for league One' (eg a low Championship level striker) this team could scrape the playoffs.
I think we’re 3 players off a genuine shout. A GK, a ST and a CDM. BUT - a striker would make the biggest difference to this side in the shortest time. Crying out for it. I think it makes us a better side overnight. We cannot continue to play with 10 men.

We have got a squad that won't get us to the playoffs I think we will finish 10th. Its so obvious sadly about Taylor please don't do what we have done with Henry ,Bodin ,Gorrin and Baldock and give him another contract we have got to get some younger players in. And we need some power for league 1.

Maybe of interest to us?

Leeds United will allow English forward Joe Gelhardt to go out on loan in January as the 20-year-old has been told he does not figure in manager Jesse March's plans for the rest of the season. (Football Insider)

Not sure why people are unconvinced by McGinty. He looks technically decent, he's quick off his line and with his distribution and doesn't look out of place. For a young keeper, settling in to a new country (I don't know as he lived here before ?) he's doing alright. Not too sure he could be blamed for any of the goals last night, he was left woefully exposed by those in front of him not picking up their man or carelessly losing possession.

Yes, agreed. He is getting better every game and didn't look out of place at all. The person giving him a 4 out of 10 in the match thread needs to give their head a wobble.

Yeah, I saw the 4 out of 10. You have to wonder if that person actually saw the game or just saw the score line. I'd love to know what warranted such a low mark as I'm struggling to see anything that could mark him down that low. 7 /10 for me or a 6 if you were being extremely harsh but a 4 !!!!!!!!

I agree with the post match re: Taylor.

He has basically been our sole striker for several seasons being asked to press from the front game after game. No real surprise he has been run into the ground. Would also add the he doesn't have the legs around him that he did in previous seasons. Even with Mackie in the squad they split the minutes 60/40ish.

As was mentioned after the game, there's no point bringing in another late 20s striker that pretty much has the same attributes as Taylor. We need someone who will take minutes from Taylor, that won't represent a drop off (GOD obviously has something, but throwing him on is a roll of the dice and out of hope).

With the above in mind, what names would you go for if we were scouting?

Probably looking for someone:
- 6ft+
- Decent aerially
- has some physicality but is also mobile
- if transfer - U23 - cost <=300k (just an arbitrary number)
- if loan - not a first loan - has played on their own or in a two up top

If those are the parameters are what we are after, who fulfils that?

To add, I am concerned for our front line. Henry given a few extra years at 33, Bodin also (30), Baldock (33), Taylor now 32, plus Wildschut (31).

Lawrence Shankland @ Hearts is one shout!
6ft 1
Plays off the last man and gets in behind
15 goals in 20

Would cost a pretty penny, but if we’re looking long term, this is the type of player that could be worth the investment!

Shankland would be great - if only to annoy my Hearts season-ticket holder work mate

He seems to get unnecessary stick from some people.
For goodness sake: he’s young and learning fast. There’s potential there.
OK his first appearance this season was a bit dodgy but that seems to have skewed some negative opinions of him.
Give him a run in goal and increasing confidence. He will come good.

If you could play with two or at least have willing runners off of the main target man, Karl had already stated before that Stockley is the best header offensively in the league. Clearly not fancied at Charlton, whether a loan til the end of the season (unlikely) or a 1-2 year deal could be a possibility. Wouldn't be against this. Might be able to actually do something with Brown's thrown ins because for all of Moore's defensive qualities, we NEVER win headers in the oppositions box.

Agree 100% with the target striker reasoning, sadly though Karl will probably get us the opposite. 🙄

I agree with giving him a proper run. Easty has had a decent season but is at the tail end of his career. McGinty is young, erratic and has a lot to learn - but the best place to learn that is on the pitch. My hope this season (assuming we don't pull off a madness and get close to playoffs) is that we put together enough results in the next few weeks to end relegation fears so we can give a lot of minutes to our young up and comers - O'Donkor, Goodrham, McGinty, Negru, Golding, Johnson. The more they play, the more they learn and also the more we learn about how ready they are for next season. If they look a ways off, loan them next summer, if they take their chance, as Goodrham and O'Donkor have somewhat this year, keep them around.
