Matches Homophobic chanting

Now that you mention it...

...has any club actually done this yet?

Better yet, the rainbow flag incorporated into our away shirt to be worn for a whole season?

Would sell like hot-cakes and spread a message far and wide - hopefully, (although not bloody likely after yesterday) - in Division 2.

Bristol Rovers a good few seasons back in 2005 posted that they’d have a pink away kit for a season as an April Fool’s. The idea proved so popular that they actually did it! I don’t know what charity it raised money for but it sold really well.

EDIT. Breast cancer research benefited from the sales which was a great initiative.

Same "excuse" for the lads in the ground then?

Surely its the younger generation that are more aware than us old fogies?
Haven’t seen any apology’s from the grown adults that were actually singing it in the ground, the only one I’ve seen is from a school age girl. Happy to be corrected though if you can point me too any apologies from these lads.
She said something stupid, was very rightly called out for it and has apologised after realising the error of her ways and I am sure learnt a very valuable life lesson. I wonder if those lads singing it have realised the error of there ways, I very much doubt it.

To put a slight positive on a very negative topic - the reaction on here apart from a couple of posters who are staying true to form has been that the chant was wrong, offensive and shouldn't happen again. I think if another goalie wears a pink top, we won't hear it or if we do it'll be quickly quashed.

When we played Kidderminster back in the conference days, they had a player who had blonde highlights in his hair and practically the whole East Stand were chanting the 'G' word at him and there was no reaction to that behaviour on the forum.

So......the fact that only a few raised this chant yesterday and that the reaction on here has been correct from 95% of forumites is progress of sorts, not that I am trying in any way to suggest that means it's fine!

A pink shirt is good but, as we already have rainbow laces if only for one game, why not go the whole way and have a rainbow kit? Is that even practical, possible? I'm sure someone on here will be able to confirm feasibility or not. Would be a fantastic display and, almost without doubt, a good seller.

Didn't we have a song about Matty Day in the conference years that in today's world wouldn't be appropriate?

She has taken ownership of her wrong and apologised publicly, can you point me to where the lads you refer too have issued their public apology?

Given how stupid the rules are around kit clashes where we have to change the kit if the socks clash I can't imagine the efl would ever let us play in a rainbow kit as it clashes with everything!

Maybe a white kit with a sash like the kit we had a few years ago but instead of yellow and blue it's the rainbow flag? Has the same statement but would also look a proper smart kit too.

I can't see a kit being made in all honesty but hopefully a one off statement like the players wearing a rainbow armband can be made against Sheffield Wednesday in front of what is going to be a big big crowd.

Will be disappointed if the club does nothing other than just the generic statement they've made so far, something to clearly show this is not welcome or acceptable at OUFC is required in my opinion.

Shock horror, offensive chanting at football grounds. Nothing new there but because in this instance it was targeting the gay community it’s a big issue. I find the foul and abusive language and culture in football far more offensive generally, especially where kids are present but for the most part it is accepted.

I don`t know either party involved.

They both did the same thing.

She was silly enough to do it in a medium that can`t be deleted, although she tried.

The yobs in question did it verbally, some people heard it many did not and I have no idea of said yobs have had second thoughts.

There have also been reports of homophobic chanting at Cheltenham v Charlton yesterday. Three youths were ejected and had details taken.

I take it you’re not gay yourself? Or are you? If you aren’t then it’s not really up to you to say how offensive it is.

I was at the match and this is being blown out of all proportion in my opinion .
I didn't hear anything to do with the pink kit just the" oxford boys on a bender'etc , I do wonder whether that was mis interpreted?
No offensive chanting acceptable but it really wasn't lots of the crowd for long periods which would indicate a problem .

It was a handful of people at most I think from what I’ve seen and heard today, I definitely heard someone shouting about gayboy in the pink and it was straight after that when the GK complained to the ref, so it wasnt the akinfenwa chant misinterpreted. I personally only heard a single voice up behind me tho, not a group of people chanting. Not acceptable either way.

I wasn't at the game. (Just saying that as some think that excludes having an opinion!)

However, its embarrassing how there are those who are simply unable to control themselves the moment they get involved with football. Not only is the homophobic chanting offensive for all the reasons so many have said, but it's also absolutely f*****g pathetic. Jack Stevens wore a pink kit last season for christ sake! And in 2022, why is anyone even using "gay" as an insult? It's not banter. It's not only embarrassing but deeply damaging. We've heard from forum members talking about their own sexuality and how offensive these kind of comments are. Who someone falls in love with has absolutely f**k all to do with football and the sooner these idiots get that, the better we will all be.

I love the idea of having a pink away shirt next season just to trigger some of our idiots! Or even a one off shirt that we could wear to highlight the clubs support for the LGBTQ+ community with shirts auctioned off afterwards for associated charities.

No thanks.

I go to football to watch exactly that. If I wanted to participate in a LGBTQ (and any other letters you want to add on) love in then I’d find a march and **** the football. I respect anyones sexuality but I don’t want it rammed down my throat (so to speak !), just as I don’t feel the need to express my sexual preference in the public domain.

Football doesn’t need to mix with politics, religion, sexuality etc. It’s meant to be an enjoyable relaxation not a vehicle for groups - minority or otherwise - to jump aboard and express their views.

You might not have heard it, but I did. It was sung twice, by a small group, directly behind the goal about half way up.

The words were "who's the gay boy in the pink".

Whether you actually find it offensive is a totally different thing, but it was chanted.

Well said.

This is the biggest blow out of all proportion I can recall. I was central in the stand and I didn’t even hear the goalkeeper chant, like you all I heard being sung continuously was the Oxford bender chant and that, taken in the jest it’s meant, isn’t at all offensive - in my opinion.

I said I hadn't heard it and that shows that is wasnt a constant or loud song that would have been different in my opinion as per the coverage.
It must have only been a very small group and ouy of 1800 3 or 4 ?
I'm more concerned by their fan allowed to run the full length of pitch and almost make an incident as well as one of our players being pushed . Let alone McCleary's disgusting celebrations and their subs intent on warming up as close to the away end as possible and trying to wind the fans up.

A small group ? What, 20, 30, 40 ? There was 2000 there and if 1% want to act like idiots can’t they be easily ignored ?

Do you think it’s an enjoyable relaxation for people who are gay and hear people singing that? I agree let’s not blow it out of proportion but let’s not ignore it either. Comments like ‘and any other letters you want to add on’ and the ‘rammed down my throat so to speak’ aren’t really needed either are they
