Same performance against Scotland and then what
Bit harsh to suggest he's going to be crap against Scotland just to make a point! Calvert-Lewin is a decent player but far more dependent on some decent service than Kane so he would have been just as invisible today. It was the negative way we set up, it's absolute madness to call for the captain to be dropped having come off the back of scoring the mot goals AND getting the most assists in the Premier League this season, most of it whilst being managed by Mr Negative Jose Mourinho.

How long do we give because his performance today was at most 5/10
More than one game? Not sure why you've got such a bee in your bonnet about Kane when most the team was fairly mediocre today and Kane is a proven performer.

BTW I had already replied to a previous post of yours when I saw this, I promise I'm not following you round to disagree with you about Kane!

So he repeats his performance today on Friday and it’s ok he can play against the Czech Republic as he’s the captain……as I said previously there no sentiment in football it’s bad enough taking a gamble on Maguire regaining his fitness during the tournament.

I know your not but Kane’s performs today was the worst out of a mediocre team as you put it. I know he scores goals and is proven as a player but it’s the now that matters.

A few less than excellent performances from Kane, who is one of the best on the planet: How long do we give him?

Eastwood is 8 weeks into his one man kamikaze mission: Give him another game, he’s probably just getting over his last clanger…

Mental.

Very conservative from Southgate today. That's OK as long as we win (and plenty of teams have won the Euros playing hyper-conservative - Portugal & Greece chief amongst them). But if we lose playing that way, then he's going to get crucified.

Like many, I'd like to see us use our exciting full back options rather than the experienced but dull Walker & Trippier.
And then I'd like to find space for a little more creativity in the midfield three. I do think that Rice is crucial - he's our water carrier, and he's going to be needed given that central defense is our weakest position. But while Philips and Mount are both fine, energetic players.....I think we could find room for a little more magic in there.

Also, Sterling gets tons of stick from England fans and the media - but the comparison between him and Foden today was night and day. He gave the Croatian defenders kittens for the whole game, scored and was at the centre of just about everything we created. Foden hit the post early on (having been set up by Sterling), and took one long ball out of the air like Pele at his peak......but otherwise was pretty invisible.

I get it - Sterling can sometimes be like an international version of Mark Sykes; bags of skill and energy but always choosing the wrong option. But he is always dangerous, and you need that at the international level.
Agree about Sterling. He'sfrustrating to watch because he gets into some great positions and seems to get the ball stuck under his feet a ridiculous amount of times but he gets into those positions.

I think Grealish and Foden are both better footballers than him technically but worry with both of them playing wide wanting it to feet we'd be far too easy to play against. Kane doesn't play off the shoulder so we would have the whole team being pretty good on the ball but doing it in front of the other team. You have to have at least one player who's going to make runs behind and across the defence to pull them out of position or at least gove them something to think about or else the build up has to be incredibly precise which is tricky. That's how the goal came about and his pace also created the chance for Foden that hit the post. He's wasteful but we need him, or someone who plays like him, to avoid being completely one dimensional.

But why would he be poor again? I'm sure if you were to ask any team at this tournament whether they'd rather face Harry Kane or Calvert-Lewin they'd want to avoid Kane. Of course if he's consistently poor then he can't keep his place, and I don't think anyone is suggesting that, but to just say "what if he's poor next game as well" isn't much of an argument.

Sterling took his goal very well today. He knew the player was coming through him but waited knowing that any decent contact would likely result in a goal. If he hadn't connected he would have almost certainly got a penalty too.

The idea that we should be dropping Sterling or Kane is insane. Foden had a great 10 minutes but then went quiet and Grealish is still likely to be an impact player from the little I've seen.

But seeing as this forum gave us the classics, "I'm not watching again if Taylor starts" and "Henry should never wear the Oxford shirt again" we can maybe see the way some have slightly different footballing views.

Was at the game today.

Got a beer in an offie on Wembley Way where the guy behind me, wearing an England shirt, was moaning about the prices for beers set by ‘these Middle Eastern C***s’. But I’m sure any booing of the knee he did was entirely motivated by an opposition to Marxism.

I’m not sure how it came across on the telly, but it felt at Wembley like the booing of the knee was drowned out by applause from the decent fans in attendance. And what a performance from England - after months of watching League One standard players, and with no disrespect to them whatsoever, it was genuinely astonishing to see the quality with which the game can be played. Not inspiring, but the kind of solid performances that win you tournaments.

Modric MOTM btw. What a player.
Cool to have been at the game! And glad that it didn’t feel dominated by the neanderthals

Thought I would look at this thread on the bog. Saw genuine suggestions of dropping one of the best centre forwards on the planet (World Cup golden boot winner, future Premier League and England record all-time scorer) and fell off in shock. Now I’ve got s**t all over the back of my knees.

Agree, Kane is quality, just look at his all round play he will grow in to this tournament.

This tournament and longer?
Surely you wouldn't drop a world class player based in one game?
I don't think that it would even cross Southgate's mind
Not unless he improves on today’s performance he was the worst England player today

That’s bull if he plays like he did today agin on Friday and we don’t score and out of the England squad he plays the same again as he did today do we keep playing him and carry him until he finds his scoring boots again or do we put someone else maybe Rashford and see how he does. He maybe a world class player but so are all the other players in this tournament so that argument doesn’t carry any weight.

I think we're taking fickle to a whole other level here!!

I didn't watch every second of the game today as the kids wanting a water fight and Mrs Egg told me to put the washing away! (International football doesn't have the same pull as Oxford I'm afraid!) However, Kane wasn't exactly shite today! He looked a bit subdued, but then again, he had seen his mate nearly die on the pitch the night before! Also, after a bright 10 minutes, Croatia tightened up at the back and chances were limited until Sterling's goal.

The idea that we'd drop a play that scores every 1.5 games or so for both club and country after one average game is insane! If we beat Scotland, and we should do that with Michael Caine let alone Harry Kane, then we'll likely have qualified with a game to spare - so why suddenly panic?

If we're to get to the final stages of this competition we need Harry Kane on form and scoring, and if he needs an extra game or two to get up to speed then that should be just fine.

Disagree.

Kane is very smart and Croatia knew he was a dangerman. He was tightly marked and fouled frequently, yet he still harried and kept Croatia very busy. This opened up opportunities for the likes of Sterling and other midfielders.

England won the opener ....did a decent job in the conditions....is it a 'must win' on friday eve?
