Ex Player A-Z Best and Worst Players (continued)

Remember watching in the London Road and he was patently not ready to play. The interesting thing was we played Brum at St Andrews 4 weeks earlier and won 1-0, Matt Murphy scoring, we should have been destroyed. Four weeks later we were. Our last season in The Championship. Ended at the Middlesborough party

Think you're getting your seasons mixed up. Our last season in the championship ended with a 5-0 win at home Stockport, elsewhere, QPR beat Palace (?) 6-0 to send us down effectively. That was the same season we won 1-0 at Birmingham before Salmongate.

Anyone else recall Jacko McDonagh? Irish centre back who only played one match away at Reading in the simod Cup....I am happy to say I witnessed him , can't recall too much about him though!

Here’s that infamous Mike Salmon game.

He’s culpable for a few certainly but I can’t say that Remy, Gilchrist, Wilsterman or Robinson (or any of the midfield for that matter too) gave him much support. Our positional awareness is all over the place. Some of those goals are non-league standard.
Watching this is an act of self harm. Didn’t we beat them 1-0 at their place only a few weeks before?

You are right Brum was 1998-99. We in the financial shite, sold Windass to survive and that was the start of our slide to the Conference.

I'm astounded nobody has mentioned Jack Midson for the best M, we should never have let him go.

Robbie Mustoe deserves a mention as he went on to have a very good career at the top level. Honourable mentions also for Bobby McDonald and Stuart Massey.
Matt Murphy was massively under rated too in my view. No Magiliton or Moody, but an honourable mention along with those you've put forward.

Also, can't let this thread finish without mentioning Lee Jarman. He should never be allowed to escape any thread including 'Worst Oxford Player' in its title.

Jeannin vs. Jarman is actually an interesting contrast of styles when it comes to footballing incompetence.

I feel Jeannin had some modicum of footballing skill; he just couldn't be arsed to use it....or run....or defend....
Jarman on the other hand, I wouldn't necessarily fault his effort. He was just slow, had the turning circle of an oil tanker, and lacked any footballing ability or awareness of any sort.
I'm parking this here.

Jeannin could 'deal with' a ball rolling gently toward him with no opposition player in 15 yards, he'd give their nearest player it or their goalkeeper. Had the pace of a librarian on a zimmer.

Once a physical challenge was threatened he'd turn to jelly.

I never really got Matt Murphy for most games. But I remember him playing a blinder at home to Chelsea in the FA Cup r4

He also scored against them in the replay very early on. Remember getting the LRC down there and the Stamford Bridge pitch was appalling. If it was at Northampton they would have called it off!

Lol, yes the pitch was terrible. I think it was Phil Gilchrist who scored. I might be wrong, we did have a very restricted view that night. I remember Zola’s goal being a bit of a screamer.

👍

Richard Branson was sat in the same row as me.

He was offered it but he didn't want to know.
With a sensible hat on, I can see how it wouldn’t of been a good move for him.
His very name is a Brand in its self, and owning a football club will always be an expensive way of risking that brand with bad PR.

Murphy was generally terrible or at least fairly invisible, but scored lots of goals. Like quite a few of our old players he had no career before or after us.

Someone had Jemson down for J so if he is a contender so is Windass, he was class up until end. Plus we never actually bought him until we sold him, didn’t we not pay the fee to Aberdeen until we receive his transfer fee ourselves?

Oh yes we only paid Aberdeen once we sold him.

Jemson was a cock as well so I wouldn't include him either. I wonder if Jemson ever shed that blubber he had when at Shrewsbury and really didn't like us due to the chants aimed at him for it? Also I wonder if those shorts and shirt ever got converted into tents?
