We are not a big club though.
No, we are not. But our manager tells us regularly that we should act like one, especially in relation to the playing squad.
His words, not mine.
We are not a big club though.
The rebuild is far less massive as it stands.I know there'll be some who will disagree with me, but if we want to really have success on the pitch, we can't keep leaving ourselves with such massive rebuilds each year.
Suggesting £2m for a L1 CB as peanuts is utter madnessWhen has £2m for a league one defender ever been peanuts???
The problem is though Sarge that we are going to need to be very lucky to keep replacing them because at some point the conveyor belt will stop churning them out if only for a season or 2 and as long as the expectations are adjusted then everyone knows where we stand.Luke McNally will be Atkinson's main replacement I reckon
money doesnt win you promotion, keeping the best players wins you promotion. The meltdown on here every time a player might leave is ridiculous. Atkinson will get triple the wage and get to show what he can do in a higher league. No doubt he is thinking of what's best for him and his family, and will want the move, so there's not much we can do. A player who wants to be here and 1.6-2m in the bank to sign that player is better than a player who is upset because they were denied a move and then doesn't play at their best.
It's not about big club mentality. The difference between the championship and league 1 is huge, and the reason we are able to sign players of the quality of Atkinson/Dickie/Moore is because they know we'll help them to make that big step. If we didn't have that track record they'd go to someone else. I'd rather be us with young, exciting players and money coming in for them year on year than a team of journeyman cloggers.
agree 100% ... other 'selling' clubs (posh as an example) appear to get more realistic fees when they sell an asset than OUFC doThe problem is though Sarge that we are going to need to be very lucky to keep replacing them because at some point the conveyor belt will stop churning them out if only for a season or 2 and as long as the expectations are adjusted then everyone knows where we stand.
The issue becomes a problem when those at the top talk about Top 30 club when evidence from being 15+ pts from the top most seasons suggests otherwise.
We can't keep hoping to hit 6th place
Yet not with us so stop talking big and acting otherwise (the club)The meltdown on here every time a player might leave is ridiculous. Goodness, I am sure that there have been many on this board who remember many a time when the club had virtually no players anybody wanted. We have got used to seeing these great young players and then selling them for millions but it’s not universal at our level. What’s the last big sale Plymouth or MK Dons made?
Posh would be buying up the cream of league 2 / conference with the fees received.agree 100% ... other 'selling' clubs (posh as an example) appear to get more realistic fees when they sell an asset than OUFC do
If you want to stump up the money to triple his wage to keep him then be my guest.money doesnt win you promotion, keeping the best players wins you promotion.
makes it even more important to not sell players on the cheap then.If you want to stump up the money to triple his wage to keep him then be my guest.
He is under contract so don't need to triple his wages. Just like we can't get rid of Hanson. Players can't have it both ways.If you want to stump up the money to triple his wage to keep him then be my guest.
But money gets & keeps you the best players… And unless you have a bottomless pit and thus always owing to an owner, you need other ways to fund growth.money doesnt win you promotion, keeping the best players wins you promotion.
We are. But they don’t sell their players to the first bidder, and sell only on their terms. Countless PUFC players have been told to stay.Goo
Goodness, I am sure that there have been many on this board who remember many a time when the club had virtually no players anybody wanted.
The older supporters on here will remember Hugh Curran, Mick Tait, Lee Taylor, John Aldridge, Ray Houghton, Matt Elliott, and many many other players sold even when we were in the top 2 Divisions.
We are trying (I assume) to do a Peterborough/ Brentford
So why do we keep selling them after earning large fees? But money gets & keeps you the best players…
We have allowed ourselves to be a very brief stepping stone for many players in recent years, who have all then gone on to bigger and better things, while we've been left treading water.Bristol City wil be offering him at least 3 times more than he’s getting here
The club can’t compete with that salary, neither would they want to stand in his way
No right direction is about our club being able to be competitive, in whatever league we are in. Not in a situation like Swindon who can’t employ a manager, can’t pay the players and look like they could be relegated again! Im definitely happy with us being in the mix for promotion.right direction on the pitch means hoping to reach the lottery that is the Play Offs ?
even one tiny glance at League One shows there are some 12 clubs to compete against + the odd surprise each season
We need to be cemented in top 2 and our chances of doing that decrease when handing advantage to opponents
if it's just about survival then stop this top 30 club nonsense
