Chairman Too Many Chiefs

Our backroom staff is genuinely astronomical for this level. Honestly, the sheer number of staff we have based at the training ground would make most Championship club’s eyes water, let alone clubs in our own division. It’s borderline madness.

Wrexham have more.

It does amaze me the criticism Niall gets..largely due to his past role. It's ludicrous.

Out of pretty much all the senior staff, including first team staff, he is the only one who has earned his wages over the last 18 months.

His hard work has given us a fighting chance of escaping this shitty situation.

The rest of them, we might as well have had Dean Gaffney, Joey Essex and Michael from Alan Partridge running the show for all the value add.
I thought they were on the board. Partridge could be a winner.
If Niall stands out it shows to me how inept the rest of them are.

It looks quite a lot but is meaningless on its own, you’d have to compare with say Salford, Bolton, and Luton.

Is that right? I had the impression it was quite slim and that we didn’t have that many coaches, HR, or marketing people. Where would you say we are over staffed?
Our medical, nutrition, sports science, academy departments. “The backroom”. A club employee recently described our staffing levels in numerous departments as “absolutely f*****g massive”.

Not every employee of the football club (or any other football club, for that matter) is listed in the club directory. Nowhere near. So anybody looking at that is wasting their time.

This is not all of the staff by a long shot. Particularly on the medical / fitness / sports science side.

Where are the numerous chefs and nutritionists? How many people work across the women’s side that only has a single email address? How big is the community team? What about the ticket office staff? Where’s the executive assistant / secretary?

Where is Chris Short? Gary Bloom? Hannah Stoyle? Keira Allen? Jonny Edmunds? Isaac Alder? Luke Dick? Lee Collier? Gerard McGinty? Alexandros Evangekakakis? Niall Keown? George Milbank? Dan Busch? Holly Bridgman? Eddie Odhiambo? Pete Wynne? Christian Fortuna?

The club directory is only the most senior people. The more junior figures and the part-time staff who do 2/3 days per week, just some of whom are listed above, plus those who aren’t on permanent contracts but work multiple days per week at the club on a consultancy or freelance basis, aren’t listed but are very much on the payroll and part of the infrastructure.

I’m not even going near things like stewards or match day staff in all of this - that’s totally separate as it is for every club. I’m purely talking about people who work across the training ground and club offices.

People would be stunned if they saw a print out of every single person who works for the football club, not to mention the level of spending that goes into our away travel and accommodation facilities compared to almost every other club in this division.

99% of Oxford United fans have no idea how enormous the setup is these days or the money that gets ploughed into all areas of the club. Perhaps if they knew the scale of it all they would have higher standards and expectations.

The latest accounts shows the average no of employees in the year ending 2022 to be 183, up from 146 in 2021.

The figures for previous years were 168 (2020), 166 (2019), 189 (2018) and 154 (2017).

I don't know what you lot are complaining about. We need all those people to make us a sustainable club. Sorry? £4m loss you say? Oh...

Why keep referencing NMcW's previous job? He has been at the club for several years now and has been instrumental in getting the stadium project as far as it is, and was also the one that insisted that the training ground was a asset of Oxford United rather than the owners.

Evidence of the work he has done, and continues to do is only light if you're too lazy or ignorant to look for it yourself. The man may not seek personal attention, and can sometimes appear a little dour in his interviews, but NMcW deserves so much more recognition than many offer, let alone your pathetic name calling.

Because it gets a reaction.

Presume that is playing and non-playing staff...premier lge clubs have on average 420 employees...as long as they are doing a worthwhile job can't see that it matters much and the most worrying was 1st team places left unfilled

As a % of cost against turnover, the numbers are just not sustainable.

We make a gross loss of £750,000 before incurring £4,250,000 in overheads.

Losses were only mitigated with profits from player sales.

You also have to consider that whilst the average number in the PL is 420, the lowest turnover recorded is still way in excess of £100 million.

I wonder how many fans are confused by the number of backroom/frontroom staff it takes to make our club function.
We have a (fulltime?) goalkeeping coach who was apparently happy for our best keeper to go on loan after giving him a contract. We had a defensive coach who has gone. Did we (do we) we have a coach for strikers?
The list of behind the scenes is endless and ineffectual.

How do we acquire these people do we need a CEO and a Chief Strategy Officer (ex school teacher) why are their jobs not the same? We are talking about a local football club not a multi-national. And then we have a Finance and Operations Director, probably the only position I would split because financial knowledge is not the same as operational knowledge ( perhaps he has both or neither?) Then look at the long list of other staff and wonder if the expense might be better chanelled into the team.

Tim Davies is going the five minute fans forum this week - ask him via that.

That is pretty concerning I would have thought.
Especially based on the underperformance of much of the club.
The new CEO has been in place a while now, so it should be expected that he should have reviewed the people and their performance. I wonder whether he will make changes atvyhr end of the season,

Is Garry Bloom still involved? he was very vocal a while back but it often felt like touting for more business rather than being vocal because there was something to crow about

He’s only ever been part-time so has always had other work alongside OUFC. He was still working here once or twice per week in January. A psychotherapist at his level will cost a minimum of £500 per day. Even based on just two days per week he would cost double what we pay the likes of Goodrham and O’Donkor and be comparable to players like McGinty and Smyth in terms of salary outlay.

Worth stating that I’ve got no problem if the club wants to build a massive infrastructure with tonnes of staff, because not only are the owners happy to pay for it, it means that they’re clearly trying to prepare the club to step up a level and not be found wanting. That is a good thing in principle. What I do have a problem with is the lack of expectation and the “but we’re only Oxford United - we’re the plucky underdogs who are overachieving every time we dare to get near the playoff places or attempt to take on the giants of Barnsley and Charlton and Portsmouth” narrative that too many people have parroted, without having the first clue as to just how hard we are punching.

A top six budget; constantly in the top four or five clubs in L1 for agents fees; millions upon millions of pounds being constantly ploughed into arguably the best training ground in the division; one of the biggest backroom setups in the league that is already competitive by Championship standards let alone lower… we are not a small football club. Anybody basing the size of a club on average attendances or how many seats a stadium has doesn’t have a clue what they’re talking about.

The fact that we’re struggling to merely stay in the division when there are clubs in the Championship playoff places with half the backroom staff that we have, let alone our own rivals in L1, is also mildly annoying.
