National News The Brexit Thread πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί

Business changes as do transactions between them. Also note we have been in their Top Ten since 1950 which was rather before the EU or EEC.
And in the linked BBC article from March it says..........

"Certainly, the slowdown is not simply about post-Brexit trade rules.
The coronavirus pandemic has played a role in reducing trade flows.
German imports worldwide were down nearly 10% year-on-year in January, and exports down 8%.
There is also another issue specific to the UK.
A large amount of stockpiling took place in December, as businesses prepared for possible disruption in advance of Britain leaving the single market and the customs union."

"Certainly, the slowdown is not simply about post-Brexit trade rules. - So Brexit IS in part a reason for the slowdown
German imports worldwide were down nearly 10% year-on-year in January, and exports down 8%. - So all countries have been affected but the UK has been affected more.
There is also another issue specific to the UK.
A large amount of stockpiling took place in December, as businesses prepared for possible disruption in advance of Britain leaving the single market and the customs union. - It's eight months plus since December 2020 and so stock piling would have already worked its way through the system.

You can ignore the facts but it doesn't stop them being facts.

I didn`t say it wasn`t a contributory factor but the world is a far different place and still impacted by recent events.

So work stockpile loads of "stuff" due to forecast of delays, then Covid happens and we have stockpiled stuff that isn`t getting used as quickly because we are doing Covid stuff and routine stuff has diminished. Trust me we have a big shed rented near Lutterworth that is rammed full of stuff, when did you last hear about a shortage of PPE?

Another prime example - robotic heart valve replacement kits, imported from Germany - Β£14k each, they are bought on use or return as every patient needs 6.
1 size on either side of the pre-surgery measurement and 2 of each in case someone drops it in theatre.
We used to consume a lot of them, which has dropped by 60%+ as it is almost exclusively urgent work only due to the shortage of critical care beds post surgery.
They still arrive on time we are just buying less of them.

You sound like my neighbour who told me yesterday the HGV driver shortage was "fake news" because he'd read a letter from a HGV driver in the Daily Mail which said he was out of work and couldn't get a job.

That doesn't bode well for the driving skills of that HGV driver.

Are you just taking everything I try to explain to you out of context intentionally or just ignoring it because it doesn`t suit?
I haven`t said Brexit hasn`t had some sort of impact on some businesses but, compared to other "stuff" that is going on, we really don`t know what that impact is.

Yeah @QR, stop it. What are you, some sort of Brexiteer or something?

I remember a prolific and largely respected Yellows Forum poster suggesting that many Remainers/Remoaners misinterpreted that slogan, and that the Vote Leave campaign were NOT suggesting our EU subscription could be better spent on the NHS. Easy mistake to make, I suppose, as it was pretty ambiguous. I do miss those referendum debates.

Simpler times back then when you could lie about the future with impunity because it hadn't happened yet.

NHS Budget you say? How little you know......
1631218048245.png

In 2018/19, NHS England held a budget of Β£114 billion.

The majority of this budget (Β£75.6 billion) was allocated to Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) according to a population and needs-based formula.

NHS England retains around a third of the budget (Β£38 billion in 2018/19) for the direct commissioning of specialised healthcare, primary care and military and offender services.

And that is without the Β£13.4 billion of historical debt that Hancock wrote off at the stroke of a pen.

Then factor in the NI "slice".

And the small matter we are still paying in to the EU pot for prior commitments.

Probably pee`d all over the total on the bus and then some already.

PS: Don`t give the NHS anymore money they`ll just soak it up like a sponge and ask for more...

Lets just drop this as well................ that nice Mr Barnier might have learnt something...

Paywall....

Free Read.

And what he said...........
"We cannot do all this without having regained our legal sovereignty, being permanently threatened by a ruling or a condemnation at the level of the European Court of Justice or the European Convention on Human Rights, or by an interpretation by our own judicial institutions. And this is the reason why ... we have chosen to say that we will propose during the first round of the legislative elections the terms of a referendum that will be organized in September next year, with two objectives: that of a parliamentary control on the quotas of immigrants each year and finally that of recovering through a constitutional shield our freedom of maneuver and interpretation on the subjects related to immigration."

I thought FOM was a key part of being in the club............... what price Frexit??

You are at it again you cheeky little rascal! Loads of big numbers in an attempt to divert.

It's a well known fact NHS has had to go up due to the increased demand an aging population brings . Any saving in payments to the EU haven't been realised yet so we're yet to see what will be done with it... if it will even ever be possible to 'follow the money'.

As a leaver I am too am bored with this thread. It’s been going on for too many years
Until a government can grasp the nettle and get Brexit done, this will never stop. The reason we have so far not made any progress is because the Government and the population are still not ready to accept what the genuine realities of leaving the European Union are!
As a former Remainer I do see an upside. 40 odd years of EU membership allowed us to be nostalgic about the past without any consequences. Now we have to stand on our own two feet. We’ll have to embrace change in the same way we did in the 50s and 60s.

I think the government are secretly hoping that the interminable time it is taking to get anything done means everyone will just get bored, move on and largely forget about it. Then it can all be kicked into the long grass and things like NIP will remain in their current stasis in perpetuity.

Meanwhile nothing much changes, other than who we blame for our bills and ills of course.....and the fact that Brexiteers won (they'll get back to you sometime in the next 50 years to confirm what, exactly[emoji1787]), so we just need to get over it and move on.

As another aside, it is nice to see that the Government are being accused of creating a policy vacuum on China with a view to softening up for a trade deal. After all....a much better prospect than those nasty, human rights respecting Europeans as a major trading partner.....

As Vic and Bob would have said.. 'Huawei'.

All the remainers conveniently scrolling past Barnier's thoughts on the EU..............

Generating enough warmth to run a small town. :)
