I don't think today was meaningless. We showed that we can compete with the team very likely to be champions. We saw the importance of having Elliott Moore back. And we saw how Des wants to play with out and out wingers, and Murphy and Dale were excellent. All of these things are huge positives that we can build on for the remainder of the season.

We also saw that not taking your chances and making mistakes at the back will cost you. And it is just as important to focus on this as to look at the improvements.

10 games to go and 6 wins and a couple of draws will probably be enough, and there was plenty to show that this is possible but by no means guaranteed.
Given that 'Today is meaningless until we play like this and win' isn't a long sentence how did you miss the 'unless we play like this and win' bit?

Enjoyable game, was thinking of giving it a miss, but pleased I didnโ€™t.

Yes, a great improvement, yes, some on pitch feistiness at last, yes, great support.

But Pompey were there for the taking, we lack a lot composure in front of goal, and howlers at the back cost us the points -again.

Body language terrible once they scored the second. . We are blowing our chances of promotion in a very mediocre L1. Top man for me, Dale, a nuggetty little player whoโ€™s got the right attitude.

Can see why Pompey are top though, they defend set pieces and broken play magnificently.

We donโ€™t

Ps Pompey fans are ok, pretty fair minded and lack arrogance.

Arguably it makes absolutely no difference how we play if we win. But finding a style that allows us to perform nearer our best, and building confidence and consistency does matter.

Therefore today wasn't meaningless.

It was if we donโ€™t play like that next week and so on.

Throughout the season, 2 of our better performances have been against Pompey.
After the last few weeks and literally only watching 45 minutes last week.
any way you look at it. Somethings not right.
The effort was there today
Is it a case of, weโ€™re against the so called top of the table, or just something prove to Mous.

It was if we donโ€™t play like that next week and so on.
For weeks we have been told people canโ€™t see the way Des wants to play, the football is boring. Well today we could see how he wanted to play, it was exciting to watch and yes we didnโ€™t win but it is a step forward IMO.
Play like that next week and we will win.

How is that in any way a "told you so" post?
Iโ€™m interpreting it as a dig towards people who wanted Des gone after last week (of which there werenโ€™t many anyway, some were just nailing their colours to the mast after we crowned a pretty shocking 4-6 weeks).

Thereโ€™s little basis for that argument being overturned after one decent game in which we still didnโ€™t beat a side categorically weaker than us on the day. If you took league positions out of the discussion itโ€™s a much more disappointing result because weโ€™ve failed to get the better of a poor side on the day. But theyโ€™re clearly mentally very strong to be winning games in that form.

Iโ€™m not unreasonable - that was our best game for months and had we been playing like that for the last 10-15 games Iโ€™d be far less pessimistic about the future with Des. Every individual turned up and gave it some welly. Itโ€™s long overdue, but weโ€™ve been desperate for those signs of progress and today, suddenly, we looked the part (Iโ€™ll politely ignore the awful mistakes that cost us the game).

Finish top 6 from here and weโ€™ll have had to have played well and got some very good results meaning weโ€™d be peaking at the right time. Encouraging day but little more than that even if we did deserve more.

This is the problem, can you see us putting in that performance next week ? I canโ€™t. Iโ€™m basing my view on 19 games, not one. Why would Des suddenly become this pro active, front foot manager ? We know thatโ€™s not him and we can almost guarantee that if we get ahead next week he will go defensive to see the game out. Iโ€™d love to be proved wrong but I just donโ€™t think a defensive minded coach can switch his philosophy just like that. We know by now exactly what we get with Des.

Afraid the players have more to show than the odd week here and there to say Des has it right.
Would point to players respect of themselves or Mous, rather than saying weโ€™ll see it to the end of season.

Jesus Dick.

Would you have predicted todayโ€™s vastly improved performance based on the previous half a dozen games?

Since he joined us, this is the type of football Des has said he wants to play. Sometimes these things take time to develop.

If one performance was indicative of the way a side would perform over 46, thereโ€™d be no point playing 46 games.

Itโ€™s called โ€˜progressโ€™, you ๐Ÿคก

Dick by nameโ€ฆ

Much better performance but it looks like our season is over, I thought so last week against Leyton Orient.
We will finish higher than last year maybe as high as ninth, but as for the play offs letโ€™s be realistic and write this season off

I will absolutely love it if we win next week , love it !!

Remarkable chutzpah from someone who was saying this, just 13 months ago...

I like Mous...but I'm not sure that he's ready (yet) for the top job at a club that wants to be as ambitious as we do.

How do we know itโ€™s not him? He literally said last week we have only seen his style of play in parts. Today seemed like that was a full Des performance and it was exciting to watch.

Still, if I was you Iโ€™d worry about your 1 true love getting an absolute pasting tomorrow by Man City.

No, 1 performance doesnโ€™t mean everything is ok but surely it is a stepping stone to build on. To dismiss a much improved performance after the last few weeks is very short sighted IMO. I would also suggest that no one expected us to play like that or that weโ€™ll before todays game. In fact most were expecting us to get walked over today.

I know it takes time but weโ€™ve seen no games really when weโ€™ve gone after the opposition. Look at these hideous games weโ€™ve seen of keep ball amongst the back four, often when we are leading and the game is there for the taking. Whatโ€™s all that about ?

Itโ€™s taken 20 games for his philosophy to shine through - to me thatโ€™s a communication problem and the players not understanding or able to execute his game plan. I have very very little faith in him but will gladly be proved wrong.
