Since apparently Des was coaching at an equivalent level at highly successful Mumbai City, can’t their greatest players be poached or would the wage demands be too high?
Some of them would give Nick Harris a coronary. Lalengmawia Lalengmawia for example, although he'd only need to learn his surname. Strangely their squad mostly consists of players over 30 or under 25.

Right it’s getting late on, and I like this game of “would you take Sam Smith” 😂

McIntyre apparently 75k to Pompey.

If the price is 75k for Smith, would fans put everything behind them for him to sign?

Sounds like Bristol Rovers are very keen on him but I’d be very surprised to see him turn his back on a survival push with the club he loves.

No, he upset me and I don’t like being upset so keep the big meanie away from me.

Keep that game to yourself I couldn't be any more tired of a players name being mentioned on here since Matt Tubbs and Barnes-Homer

That's harsh, those are four excellent players who sadly can't stay fit enough, though Bodin has been reasonably available. This time next year we'll have four more you want rid of, don't worry!
I'm sorry but this is the exact mindset that means we remain in League 1, we cannot afford passengers, let alone the 6 or more we currently have, there is no room in successful football teams for sentiment on that level, none of those 4 players are either good enough to challenge at the top of the league, or fit enough, often enough to have any meaningful impact, or sadly in some case, both.

We need to do better

Thanks for that, Warks.

So in other words the owners have already essentially given (not loaned) the club £2m to enable us to run a much higher wage budget than a club of our size ought to be able to under League One SCMP rules.

That's.....kind of scary. I already knew that we weren't running sustainably and racking up debt, but that's even worse than I feared.
So if our owners decide that they don't want to pay another £2m for worthless shares next summer (assuming that we haven't got promoted), then we would basically have to slash our wage bill massively to stay within SCMP?

I think that's a pretty fair summary of where we are.
And it wasn't only £2m in '23, there was a £1.5m share issue in June '22. The owners are hugely bankrolling us.
They have to. If you do a rough calculation of our sources of income given there have been no significant players sales since McNally, you're left with ticket sales, merchandise, efl payments, TV, cup runs. With average crowds of 8500, it's hard to see income much more than £5m (in line with the last published accounts).
SCMP would allow 60% x £5m = £3m in squad wages. If we assume a 24 man senior squad, if Bran, Murphy, Browne, Henry, Moore etc are payed anything like the rumoured numbers (big if, I know) then the rest of the squad would need to be on about £1k/wk to meet SCMP - without the share allocations.

I agree, I was just taking issue with his tone. I’ve really enjoyed watching those guys but don’t expect to see them next year - maybe Bodin, if he finishes the season strongly, but again I suspect he won’t be fit.

Bodin is the only maybe, but to be honest, I think that is me being generous rather than cut-throat and I think we need cut-throat in the summer of we're serious

The board have history of not fully going for it & backing the incumbent manager. Wasn’t there a season where we wanted szmodics but they didn’t want to put up the money? Remember Peterborough’s chairman going on about it, saying that we only wanted a loan.

Can you not read warksox message 4 posts above? The owners are putting in around £2m a year to fund the wage bill.

I know we all like laughing at Reading, but their problems stem from their owners pumping money into the club over a number of years, it seems to me like our supporters want our owners to do exactly the same.

And until the owners have a way forward to put the club on a more sustainable footing, ever will it be thus.

It is the huge pachyderm in the room.

Yes, the top 30 club schtick from the club is problematic - unless they clarify it by saying "when we have our new stadium" and even then it's probably a push.

We're nowhere near top 30 off the pitch (we don't own our ground, we get 8k fans) so it would take something incredible (either massive overperformance, or loads of cash) for us to get to it on the pitch.

If we're aiming to be a top-30 League 1 club then we're doing really very well.

I don't think anyone could reasonably deny that we're one of the top 30 clubs in league 1*.

*Maybe not quite on current form.
