There are simply too many players pulling a decent wage who are not having an impact. We need 4 or 5 more from here to be able to compete in the top 2.

Who are the other talents that our Academy has produced in say, the last 5 years?
IIRC the cat 3 academy was restarted with promotion back to L2. So assume 2010 and if you were a 9 year old then you would be 23 now. In reality from pretty much a standing start I think it takes about 10 years to really build a system and starting bearing fruit. There have been some such as Shandon Baptiste (although not in the academy for long) and of course the current cohort and those coming through but not significant numbers into the first team. Alongside that there are many talented players who never get to the top of the pyramid ay Oxford. For example in the past year there has been circa £400k of players sales.

The outcome that I think we are heading towards is 1 or 2 a year that are potential first team (after a loan period) and an overall first team squad with 5 or 6 graduates - and elsewhere the player sales to Prem clubs means that the academy is a zero cost or even net contributor to FFP.

Way I see it, we need to sign three forwards - one of whom is an experienced out-and-out striker. That is the bare minimum to compete this year.

We should also sign another box-to-box midfielder to provide some cover for Cam. If we don't, then it's season over if anything happens to him. But we could decide to risk him staying healthy for 20 games.

Otherwise, I reckon we're in good shape.

I'd be interested to know what sort of a fee we're talking about. Not exactly been prolific in his career so far, but he's still only 21 and their joint top scorer. Think they signed him for £20,000 from Stoke.
Initially £150k plus add-ons. Now £250k.
There is a sell-on fee due to Stoke.

Personally wouldn’t be fussed with him going if we got a fee. He was excellent at the start of this season, but has become incredibly inconsistent recently (typified by ten seconds in the first half against Carlisle where he gave the ball straight to a Carlisle player 30 yards out in a dangerous position, won it back and then went on a 40 yard run), and I think this level right now is his norm.
As long as we didn’t replace him with McEachran…

If there is genuine interest in McGuane this month it will be difficult. If we have a year option that will play into negotiations but I doubt he would want to turn down playing in Europe at his age. I was hoping for another central midfielder this month anyway so that would leave us needing two. Lots of signings required in a short amount of time, hopefully they tell them to wait until summer. Legia currently lagging behind after a 2nd place finish last season so probably want bodies in the door ASAP.

On a side note, notice a Leicester City type story happening in the Ekstraklasa this season. Slask Wroclaw are currently 3 points clear at the top after finishing 1 place and 1 point above relegation last season, and only finished 1 place and 3 points above relegation the season before that. Don't you just love football!

Be gutted in McGuane left. Some fans seem to hold him to such high standards where the odd misplaced pass here and there means he's suddenly out of form. On his day he dominates midfields and that's hard to replace.

This strikes me as a much better deal to be pursuing than Marriott who sounded all-together much more expensive. Appreciate with that you get a slightly different player than Goodwin but this one feels like a much better fit for us, again, to add to a blended group of strikers.
I'm not sure. Goodwin has not really scored goals consistently til Clarke came in.. he's got 6.

He's a different type of player, tall and quite physical.

It's a gamble for sure, as opposed to proven League 1 goals. But I trust Ed.

Constantly among the higher rated players by oppo fans, whose unbiased opinions generally hold more credence...

So it starts, the European big guns circling round our players, Mcguane to Legia Warsaw, Henry to Honved, Smyth to Steau Bucharest and Moore to Sheriff Tiraspol.
Top googling for "obscure European sides" there ;)

Would bring much needed height and muscle to the team, something we’ve been crying out for.

He might not score that many - with decent wingers and RR providing assists that might change - but he would definitely be a welcome presence in both boxes - attacking and defending.

I’m probably showing my age but I still think you can’t beat a good old fashioned ‘big ‘un’ at CF

In true MCG style he could be our Haaland!
