Jesus most of you are hard work on here. £500k is not alot for a proven centre forward at this level. As someone else pointed out Marriott has a better goal return than JCH even though Marriott has played the past season and a half in a poor Fleetwood side.

Marriott for 500k is crazy, for a club like us.

We have rich owners yes, do we want to throw money at someone on the back end of their career, where if we go up. We will have to replace him, he doesn’t have a good record in the champ.

We’re better off signing a younger but still proven player to a degree, with potential to grow with us rather than fade away.

He’s not someone to carry a team now, he will drop off in 2/3 years. It’s silly, 500k is a lot of money for a club like us that produces a multi million pound loss most years, especially on someone without a chance of financial return.

On the other hand he is a good player, and for the right price 100-200k would be a good option.

I'm more than happy with Marriott, but like others feel the fee is too high. I'm not actually convinced it'll be as much as £500k though.

The majority of the time transfer fees are over exaggerated especially when they are noted down as undisclosed. I reckon the deal would be closer to £300k.

Think peoples expectations are a little off if they think we can sign a striker who is likely to contribute as much as Marriott for less than 500k. It's 2024!

Whilst I like the notion of 'little L1 Oxford' spending within their means, I am much happier that it sounds like the club are really going for it to take this opportunity at Championship football next season. Best opportunity in years and it's evident that they know exactly how far we will need to go to achieve it. Sign him on.

£1m+ on this transfer window would show that we mean business. We can tell Kip we've been saving up those 400ks for the past few windows just for this one!

Not convinced by Marriott for anything over £150k. I’d rather us spend the money elsewhere. The winger from Chesterfield would be interesting as would Stokes though I hear championship clubs are looking at him as they will loan him back.

Also on comments made on Murphy-he was our main threat in many games this season. I would keep him as I think he has pace and lots to offer!
If you look at strikers. Clarke Harris is gonna be 600k plus. Not gonna get that young in on the cheap. Langstaff unavailable. Ipswich keeping ladapo i think. When you look theres not many strikers left out there. 500k is a little too much. But he will get loads of chances in our side. I agree on murphy. We should extend his contract

If we sign him and he helps get us promoted, I'd say it would be worth it. Any players not good enough for the Championship can be moved on or loaned out. The biggest deal is to get there in the first place and then these are nice problems to have.

Marriott was born in Beverley, but grew up in Northants area until Ipswich bought his Mum a house to get him to sign for them as a youngster.
I think he deems Northants as 'home' in that sense.

As for the Stokes rumour - the original twitter account that put that up, has never had anything correct, only tweets during transfer windows, and prior to this window opening, had last kept up a tweet from May 2023. It has deleted shed loads of false rumours that it has created and they've not happened.

He'll be a player we're fully aware of, but I would be surprised if anything is "live" this early in the window for any club to be getting him.
Ipswich bought his mum a house!

Right my 12 year old is suddenly going on an intensive training and fitness regime starting at 8am tomorrow.

Name one that is going to cost under £500k? Also don't forget it's not just about the transfer fee it's the players wage demands that are the main stumbling block with younger proven players.
I mean I’m not a scouting expert, also a reminder of we’re looking at getting another loan in, that may be Ladapo, Mellon, Taylor or whoever so pairing of any following with that loan addition for similar or less money seems perfectly fine to me.

Jake Young - I don’t know the price but 300k has been rumoured, a lot younger and on the up.

Al Hamadi - believe price is high? Maybe too high? But again younger and another on the up.

Lorent Tolaj - Brighton academy player, struggled to get going now flying at Aldershot. 22, big physical can score goals. Not as proven as the others but money - player potential is a lot higher.

Malik Wilkes? - Still 25 proven in league one, can play anywhere across the front line. Not wanted at Sheff Wed & reported he could be one to leave as they recruit.

Again these players aren’t the WOW.

But alongside a loan option may be a smarter way to spend money rather than 500k on someone on the back end of their career

disagree. Sheff Wednesday threw money at players that are good for league one, ageing and didn’t cut it at champ level. And they’re a shambles, better to build a team of players that progress with the club, Plymouth/Ipswich style

I certainly don't have an issue with the fee, it's the fee plus his age that worries me, I would much rather go and spend £750k for someone who is younger and somewhat proven, and either has many more years left in them with us or can command a larger fee in a few years to someone in the Championship (if we don't get there first)

Exactly that, it’s not player or fee. It’s the Player, with the fee and his age. Better financial options for future of the club

Christ, can't win with some people.

We beg for months for a proven goal scorer at this level and then one becomes a real possibility (Marriott) and everyone turns their nose at it?

Then if we'd signed an inexperienced unproven youngster from below you'd then complain we don't have a proven goalscorer.

We sign a loan striker and people then accuse a lack of ambition and/or backing from the board!

Whoever we bring in, Waldron and Co have earned the right for us to trust them. Stop shutting players down before they've even picked up a yellow scarf ffs!!
