Ex Player Best Player - Post 1990

Are we picking this team based on pure footballing ability, or based on the impact they had at OUFC?

If it's the latter, then Beano is one of the first names on the team sheet - but he probably doesn't make the squad if it's the former because he was a solid League Two striker, but no better than that.

Assuming it's the former, I'd go with:

P.Whitehead
Baldock Elliott Gilchrist Powell (pre-cruciate injury)
Simpson Magilton D.Whitehead Beauchamp
Roofe Moody

I would listen to arguments about having Brannagan in place of Dean Whitehead, but I think Deano was better defensively - and given the absurdly attacking nature of the rest of the line-up, we might need that (or just win every game 6-5); would agree with Mr. Walton that they were very similar quality - and I would argue that they were both better than Lundstram whilst with us - obviously Lunny continued to improve once he left......

I’d say Lunny and Deano is a tight run battle in midfield.

I also think Windass may have a claim over Moody even though I much prefer Moods for what he did at Oxford

Loved Moody but feel Windass was a much better player (in what was a short spell admittedly).

I could never pick Dean Windass just because of his disgraceful effort shafting his teammates in his final game at QPR. That he wouldn't go for a free header into an open goal summed him up for me and he deserved all he got from us supporters at the game. That Gilly and the other players ignored him after the final whistle says everything. I will add he should have been subbed as soon as it became apparent he was being an a**e.

So worth noting that Windass only score 15 league goals in his one season with the club (playing on a genuinely bad team, admittedly). Definitely some moments of high quality, but I'm not sure that's quite enough volume to make Oxford's 'Best Ever (since 1990) XI'? Not when he's competing against someone like Moods who had two and a third epic seasons after joining (even if the two seasons were at a lower level).

Course you could make the argument that the single best season by an Oxford striker since 1990 was Nigel Jemson in 1996/97.......it would be an easier argument to make if he hadn't been such a t**t, and so useless in his second spell!

Ooh I’d forgotten Powell! He can be left back, or Fordy for his hand clapping and pointing. Agree Windass didn’t endear himself enough to be included.

PS put Cam in for Whitehead and we’re sorted.

Oi, leave ‘Super’ Kevin Sandwith alone. He was a lovely bloke and very handsome for good measure.

On a more serious note, Powell was absolute quality for 2/3 seasons when we were in the Championship. Was on the verge of joining one of Newcastle and Derby and was called up to the England U21 squad at one point, although I don’t believe he played. Unfortunately he liked the booze and ciggies too much and had a touch of the Joey about him in some ways. Only really wanted to play for Oxford and his head didn’t always seem to be right. Such a shame that he was basically finished by the time he was 25.

Foster as in Luke Foster? What's he done to deserve that?! Players player and Supporters player of the year, was miles better than any CBs that played for us around that time, until Jake Wright came along.

Also, Smith as in Dave Smith? The guy who played central midfield week in-week out for what was almost certainly our best team since 1990 (both the 95/96 promotion side and the 96/97 side that stayed up in the Championship comfortably)? Yes, he wasn't very exciting but I reckon there's been at least fifty worse Oxford midfielders since!

I'd be going with Peter Fear in that spot personally.......

Aye, but as someone who saw Chris Wilder literally throw him out of his office after he walked in and demanded a new contract, purely because his partner (now known as Rebekah Vardy) wanted an even bigger house than the one he already couldn’t afford, I have very little sympathy with him being shat on. He was a silly sausage.

Whitehead a different level to Clarke .
Powell/ M.Ford better than Sharon
Moody ,Jemson ( 1st spell) .
Elliot/ Gilchrist / Ceri Evans centre backs although understand you likely were not able to watch them .

Yes that’s all very true but Windass was just a brilliant, brilliant footballer. As good a finisher as I’ve seen at Oxford (post 95) and his close ball control was superb. An absolute bastard too (as shown by his behaviour towards us right at the end).

And yes Jemson was so, so good in that first season after promotion. A top A*****e too, as everyone in the game seems to agree 100% on!

Man, I used to love watching Matt Elliott play in yellow. On his day, he was so absurdly dominant in his own box that he would crush the spirit of opposition strikers as he cleared everything all day long.......scored 25 goals at a rate of about 1 in 7 from centre half as well!

Beauchamp pinpoint corner, Elliott near post flick on, see you later.

Must have got a fair number of assists too with all those near-post flick ons.

Also: he looked weird with hair.

I'm sorry, but no left-back could draw inept to the level that Alex Jeannin did. Sandwith was just feeble tho I seem to remember him scoring from a pulled back corner at Histon or Barnet (poss Didcot) and being quite surprised.
