Ex Player Luke McNally

Good luck in the championship Luke was a pleasure to watch him play surely he's going to be going to better places than Burnley in his career 😝 but gutted he left but can understand the reason behind it good deal for us good deal for him now we just need to replace him

I will watch Luke McNally’s progress with great interest. Such an exciting prospect, has the most potential of the current squad to play at a higher level, the most exciting OUFC player since Shandon Baptiste in my opinion. Not many players of his height and stature are that quick and athletic. You can see why he was bound to attract attention from a higher end Championship club.

I actually think the move will be a good for him, especially if Company gets Burnley playing well and pushing for an immediate return to the Premier League.

Disappointed that we won’t see him continue to develop in a yellow jersey but wish him well.

Bye Luke. Bedankt and good luck at Burnley.

You've misspelt "Vincent Kompany's Burnley".

But seriously, I will follow his career with interest.

It's quite a fee for someone with only one U-19 ROI cap.

Hats off to Luke McNally, it's clear from his interview with the Burnley website, that he was aware of the potential of the move before flying out to our training camp. Got on with it, trained hard with us and didn't play any silly games. Waited for permission (presumably when fee agreed) to go and have a medical, finalise terms etc.

Agree with the model.

Accept he needed selling.

Agree with Tonyw.

If we had Ashton at the club we hood out until transfer deadline day and ask much bigger money and he goes for above 3m.

We undercook our prices. Sell ons are a risk as proven by how few ever seem to actually turn to reality

From a recruitment perspective this is also a good thing. Untried players seeing us as a strong route to the championship (one way or the other)

So any club Ashton is at only sells players right at the death to get the maximum fee ? Not sure that’s right. £1.6m for a L1 defender is big money. If Ashton was here and adopting that transfer strategy how could Robinson be expected to plan for the season ? That would be a nightmare not knowing whether McNally was staying or going, could he fail the medical, might Burnley pull out at the last minute etc.

I wonder if Burnley will be in the group of “top thirty” clubs that we are aiming to be part of in a few years?

I guess the same way dozens of clubs manage every season to make big name sales on deadline day extracting maximum from desperate purchasers. I don’t think it’s that “out there” especially given he has a contract for two years. If he doesn’t sell then just flog him next window.

I presume it’s not hard to have more than two decent central defenders in a squad.

One assumes Oxford would be aware of his medical fitness and would know if he’s going to pass or fail. That’s a bizarre one to question.

I think that number only looks good in the same way someone would be happy if they sold their house for more than they bought it even if it was 30% below the market value.

The key point is that very few of our sell ons have actually kicked in since 2016.

Burnley have just been relegated from the richest league in the world. Sold a goalie for tens of millions and have parachute payments worth tens of millions.

We’ve just sold them a defender better than Dickie (who is rated one of the best in that league) for 1.6m gbp. My opinion is that’s not good business

That's just not true.
Dickie was a far better defender than McNally when leaving Oxford. I would be surprised if many disagreed with that.
McNally has huge potential ( and he is far quicker than Dickie). But last season he was inexperienced and at times naive.
ÂŁ2m in my view is a very good price, but the add ons could be really important if he reaches his potential

Burnley must be one of the favourites to go back up. As mentioned they have the funds so if needed they can go out and buy players of pedigree. I would hope we have various clauses in the sell on that include getting promotion, number of games played etc. I think it’s good busines.

We can agree to disagree given it’s pretty subjective 🤝🙂

What's your basis for your Ashton bit?
He was with us for 18 months: July 2014-Dec 2015. In that time we didn't sell any one.

At Bristol City
16/17 - 7 sold for fees. 1 on summer transfer deadline day (Jonathan Kodija)
17/18 - 2 sold for fees. Neither on a deadline day.
18/19 - 9 sold for fees. None on a deadline day.
19/20 - 5 sold for fees. 1 on winter deadline day.
20/21 - 5 sold for fees. None on a deadline day.

Ipswich
21/22 - 8 sold for fees.1 on winter deadline day (Scott Fraser)
22/23 - no sales yet.

I retract my Ashton point about deadline day specifically. Great research. Perception. > reality

I still think we’ve under negotiated and he was good at negotiation

How often did he sell his best asset 60 days before the transfer window “SLAMMED SHUT”?

Well I think it's risky, as a L1 club, playing hardball with a monied club higher up and taking a transfer to the last knockings on deadline day. They'd have had more irons in their fires than some L1 defender with 30 or 40 games to his name. ÂŁ1.6m is very good money, all Burnley are buying is potential and there's no guarantee he will succeed. We think he will because we see him in action against Morecambe, Accrington and Fleetwood but the Championship is a genuine level up in quality.

In my opinion Dickie is a superior defender, by some way. He was imperious for us and his defensive game is better than McNally. He's positionally sounder, a better reader of the game and an all round better footballer. Both are very good at moving forward with the ball and it's a close call as to which is the most accomplished in this part of their game. I'm in no way down playing McNally's ability - he's been great but for ÂŁ1.6m he has to go.

Fair enough . I disagree.

Also my final point (I don’t want to get into one of those awful arguments surrounding this forum right now) but if Burnley found someone else I think you’d still find plenty of buyers interested in McNally. Tottenham were being touted as interested only a week ago (pinch of salt) but you get the point
