Transfer News January 2021/22 Transfer Window

Was it ever really. Lots of fluster and names mentioned, as seems to happen every window, deals done early, 3 deals done of last week, so and so is in the building, recruitment was started last November, yet here we are less than an hour left in the window, and we are three players short of where we should be.
God your poor wife

I agree we need a defender to come in (hoping two) but we’ve lost only Thorniley and kept Kane, signed Brown and Smyth - I think we’ve done ok
If the window 'slammed shut' (copyright every sports journo ever) right now then I think it would be disappointing in terms of *this* season. We were already a bit threadbare in defence and Thorniley going has made that more acute. We need a backup for Taylor (no, that really isn't Winnall!) - can you imagine what would happen if he got injured for a few weeks? We can't be in a situation where were are only an injury or two away from having to start Winnall, Mousinho and/or Hanson and hope to finish the season strongly by crossing our fingers very very hard.

Browne is a known quantity (but not fit), Smyth could be the next Whyte or Sykes - but equally he could be the next Hoban or Cooper. They are for next season.

I’m not so sure that it’s good business sense to turn down £250k for Sykes now (if that’s what was offered) when he’ll just leave for free in a few months. He’s decent, but replaceable. If they offered something derisory like £50k, sure, but anything above a quarter of a million and I’d reluctantly take it, save his wage and use the money on finding the next Mark Sykes.
He's called Oisin Smyth.

Where would everyone list the positions in terms of most to least in terms of where we desperately need players? For me it would be:

Most:

1. Left back
2. Centre back
3. Striker
4. Defensive Centre Mid

Then I actually can’t really seperate left wing, right wing, centre mid, right back and goalkeeper all as don’t need anyone at all.

Kane loan recall bought out, Cam and Sykes kept despite big offers, Browne on permanent and young prospect from Ireland. Doesn't seem weaker to me?
Kane, Cam and Sykes were already at the pub so them still being here can't be called strengthening. Browne will be a very good signing but not immidiately and were inundated with wingers anyway. Like the look of Smyth but doubt he plays this season. Meanwhile we've lost Thorniley and have no back up for any of our defenders apart from Mous who's basically retired or just shoving some of our extra wingers in at full back.

I'm still hopeful of getting someone else through the door but if we don't then I'd say it was a disappointing window. An injury to any of our defenders and we're in trouble, and if any experience a dramatic loss of form there's nothing we can do about that either.

Depending on a final one or two signings, we have an insanely imbalanced squad. If everyone stays fit, no problem.

However I cannot fathom what we do if Taylor, Moore, Long, McNally or Seddon suffer a serious injury.

Seriously, what is our strategy if Taylor is out for weeks, Winnall and no backup each game?

Seddon injury, Long left back, Force right back?

Moore injury, Long centre back, forde right back...

Either way, suddenly we look a lot weaker with square pegs in round holes.
Losing Taylor would be a massive blow of course, but I like to think a fully fit Browne could do a decent job up there.

Think your second point about any injury to the defence is the bigger disaster of the two.

I wonder if us seemingly needing to constantly bat away Blackpool has helped lead us to missing out on a couple?

Centre back who can cover left back if needed.
Then a striker .

That's bare minimum.

For me, ideally we'd sign an experienced left sided defender who could make a decent fist of covering 1 and 2 (yeah, hen's teeth in January, I know!) and a striker as a priority. We *do* need a DCM, but have managed to scrape through with Kane suspended - so I'd put that as the lesser priority. With 42 minutes to go as I type, I am getting less hopeful of signing any of them!

let’s be honest we don’t really need a striker this window. Browne or Whyte are more than capable of filling in (as they have shown) should Taylor get injured/suspended. Winnall would do a job in my opinion too

A left sided defender is a must though
