Matches Homophobic chanting

It is rather a sad and depressing subject all round but, it has to be said, the songs that are sung these days from our support lacks so much. If it's not "We all hate Swin*don" then it's "Kick his f*****g head in" or, as of late, homophobic or libellous sex offender lyrics. What has happened to make it so predictable, boring and offensive?
Not so long ago we had the brilliant Kemar Roofe chant that practically the whole ground joined in to sing. Back in the Manor we had a variety of chants, some borderline, granted but none the less a variety.
I have hopes that the new fan group will put their heads together and come up with some new original chants/songs and will do what I can to help.
Yesterday seems to have brought things to a head with all the negative activities, let's hope that it is also a catalyst towards change and improvement.
It says something about our support when fans start to feel uncomfortable attending.

I was sat front and centre so as close to the GK as could be. I Definitely heard one person somewhere up behind me shout it, and then again even after the warning they shouted something else about ‘gayboy’ not sure who it was but I’m sure it was the same person shouting both. I didn’t hear any groups singing it but It wouldn’t surprise me if they were as seems to be a few confirming it happened on social media. Shame in this day and age, and a shame the rest of the oxford fans are tarnished with the same brush for the actions of a few idiots.

As for everything else that happened, the Wycombe fan will be getting a banning order, rightly so and possibly charged by the police. I also heard one of the ousp got kicked out at half time lol(some things never change🤣). As for the tweet above, she’s a young girl who’s apologised, let’s not go over the top, it will be a valuable lesson for her but we don’t need a lynch mob after her.

I hope these homophobic pigs never turn up to another OUFC game quite frankly. Stay out of our club.
Totally agree. Or get them educated.
I had no idea what this was all about when the announcement was made. I was in the far corner of the stand and truthfully can say I didn't hear those chants. I was trying to work out what it was all about and honestly thought at the time that it must have come from home supporters. Now I know.

Well said, sir.

I was about ten rows back behind the goal, and it was pretty much non stop offensive chanting all afternoon. A bunch of about 30-40 morons, mostly in their late teens/early twenties. It was like being back in the 70’s. I haven‘t seen that sort of nonsense for years. Hope they don’t turn up to an Oxford game again.
Back in the 70’s those 30-40 morons would have run a mile. They need to be called out identified and banned long term from football and not just Oxford.
The mentality of a few and it is only a few thankfully, is appalling.
Sorry it I shout and scream at football but I don’t target an individual apart form 🎵 your not fit to referee 🎵
The club take the right attitude but some of the outsourced stewarding take a different attitude and that is not to do anything.
@OUSP Secretary can you email AT and see what he is going to do about it as this will affect the club we could also possibly be fined for yesterdays chant as the referee got involved and spoke to the managers.

Radox said the same when the ref spoke to the managers

Did notice this when I sat in the oxford mail end for the Cheltenham game. A certain group giving the keeper stick all second half and singing the same crappy chants. Seriously we need some new songs to support the team rather than the constant abuse aimed at the away supporters and players from the opposing team.

I was about behind the goal just to the left of centre maybe halfway up the stand, and certainly heard an individual attempt to get the chants going twice. I think a couple of others joined in with him initially but it died out very quickly.

What’s wrong in singing” we all hate Swindon “ and a song such as “Build it up with Yellow and Blue “? Songs that are discriminating should cease but until the outsourced stewards we have actually do their job and if needs be remove offenders that are chanting these discriminative songs, afraid we are going to be in for a long hard slog in trying to prevent them.

I love the idea of having a pink away shirt next season just to trigger some of our idiots! Or even a one off shirt that we could wear to highlight the clubs support for the LGBTQ+ community with shirts auctioned off afterwards for associated charities.

#PinkAndProud
Now that you mention it...

...has any club actually done this yet?

Better yet, the rainbow flag incorporated into our away shirt to be worn for a whole season?

Would sell like hot-cakes and spread a message far and wide - hopefully, (although not bloody likely after yesterday) - in Division 2.

Agree, let's not forget in the home fixture the Wycombe fans challenged one of their own fans for the golliwog chant aimed at one of our players. Every club has these dickheads and thank god its just a brainless minority of the crowd these days.

Didn’t the Cardiff owners change their home kit from Blue to Pink? I know that wasn’t anything to do with LGBGT+ but maybe a season with a pink away shirt might be a good idea……but also to see what reaction we would he for wearing a pink away shirt and some fans adorning the shirt at home and away games.

Sorry, but what is the difference between shouting such things at the ground or posting the same on social media?

Sauce for the goose and all that.

The white away shirt we have this year with multi coloured design instead of the light blue would sell well. I would buy an all pink one like scotchers posted though. Think this would be good for the club rather then just issuing a general statement on the issue.

It was red as the Malaysian owner wanted to grow the brand over there.

I've found the replies interesting. Last time I posted about this, on the older version of the forum half the replies were supportive and half were disgraceful.

At one point I mentioned that I'm bisexual, and after that someone personally messaged me to say that nobody has ever "come out" on this forum. I wonder if I'm still the only one who has?

Not that it should be necessary, of course, but when people are being homophobic, it is necessary to show that there are LGBT people everywhere, whether they are open about it or not.

Things seemed to have improved since that incident, which I am thankful for OxVox and the club for raising and tackling in various ways (not least excellent articles in the programme, which I still have a copy of). But there still seems a long way to go - in 2022 there *still* haven't been any out professional footballers in the English game, and there seem to remain minority of fans who think they can still get away with homophobic chanting. Let's make sure they don't- yes, inform the club or stewards, but please be brave and confront the issue head-on on the terraces. That's not easy, I know, but it's the only way proper progress is made.

COYY!

Thanks Tom for both your courage and your eloquent post which hopefully reminds everyone that these words impact many folk including plenty of our own fans who may be gay and sat amongst us having to listen to it.

Wider question to everyone as I wasn’t there and it still doesn’t seem clear to me.

Was this 5/6 individuals shouting stuff or a larger section of the support chanting? Just trying to understand the scale of the problem yesterday.

Nothing. What I am saying is she is a young girl who has said something stupid and has apologised for it soon after. I’m sure we have all said things we didn’t mean or didn’t realise the consequences of when we were younger.

Genuinely mental to me that some peoples reactions to LGBT supporters saying, rightly, ‘these chants are offensive and I want them to stop’ is ‘well I didn’t hear it and even if I did it wasn’t offensive’. I don’t understand why anyone who isn’t a member of a persecuted minority feels capable of telling members of that demographic, who have likely experienced a lifetime of discrimination, what is and isn’t acceptable.

Wholeheartedly agree with the comments that it would be great if the club made a real statement in relation to this. I want OUFC to be a club that I can be proud of, and being the first club in the UK (that I can think of) to make a bold, visible statement (not a few paragraphs on Twitter) against homophobia for me would be an outstanding gesture.

Same "excuse" for the lads in the ground then?

Surely its the younger generation that are more aware than us old fogies?
