Ultimately all our opinions are just as legitimate as KR - it’s preference. But I think he is incredibly passionate about attacking football and scoring goals that the law of averages will lead to wins by 4 goals which we’ll all relish but also points dropped because we’ve been sucker punched on the counter! But he’s now a very experienced manager and if he sees a problem I’m sure he will fix it. My personal opinion is he could stick Gorrin in there without sacrificing the style of football and maybe he agrees but Gorrin is not ready so his hand is forced at the moment. We’ll see in time. Either way I admire him for sticking to his principles that have served him incredibly well - how many times has he finished outside the top 10/12 as a manager? I’d love to know. He’s an excellent coach for this level and will be in the championship one day whether that’s with us or someone else.

but why play Brannigan in gorrins position unless gorrin is injured

Gorrin wasn't 100%. He was one of those who was isolating because of covid, and like Long and McGuane, all had missed out on competitive preseason game time. We were told that 3 of the squad had tested positive, so maybe it was these three and a little precaution was needed to ensure that there were no lasting impacts.

The criticism being fired at Robinson was that he was trying to be clever, but isn't it far more likely that we selected players based on their fitness data? And once you take Gorrin and McGuane out of the middle, then Brannagan, Henry and Sykes become to sensible choice - especially when they played together for the last quarter of last season.

I think Gorrin being out and Brannigan having to play there backs up the need for cover there, our normal strategy would probably be to try and pick up a youngster/non league/Irish league player and have him learning and settling in while being cover, but I wonder if with young lad whose name escapes me impressing in pre season we don’t want to hold his progress, so perhaps a loan as cover?

My preference is for Gorrin to start the majority of the games, especially every big game.

Just my opinion, KR didn’t get the starting XI wrong yesterday. We dominated for long periods and CB was the start of everything good and allowed us to play so much of the game away from our final third.

Remember when 4-4-2 existed. You didn’t have one legitimate holder. Against the weakest teams in this division, we don’t need a ball winning midfielder. We need a deep lying dictator. Very different roles.

Be interested to know if anyone thinks we win with Gorrin in the side yesterday. They didn’t look like scoring at all. One mistake cost us.

When gorrin is fit why not use him in the league games and JJ in the pizza games because if he’s good enough he’s old enough as they say

I’ve slightly lost faith in Gorrin because of some undisclosed fitness issues and also all the fouling and bookings. Hope I’m wrong because he’s brilliant when on form. It’s not unreasonable to want someone similar to slot into that role when necessary.

Another holding midfielder? We only have one, Gorrin. So we absolutely need another in my opinion.

Bold point, Pep and Klopp must be wrong always starting a holding midfielder then. In fact the only time Pep didn't start a holding midfielder was the Champions League final and it was a disaster, constantly countered and broken through. It actually stopped them being able to hold onto the ball.

Man City - Fernandinho
Liverpool - Fabinho
Chelsea - Kante

Oxford - No need for one because more ball players helps?

Sorry, can't agree on that one! Unless we are losing and chasing the game, anyway.

You're saying it's an issue that we only have one, then list examples from top premier league teams, but only giving one.

Who are the backup enforcers at those clubs? Ball playing midfielders brought back into CDM (Gundogan, Henderson, Jorginho)

I completely agree with this, excellent post. Say what you will about KR and lord knows he pisses me off sometimes. But he’s stuck by this club through some uncertain times, brought through some great players and took us to the playoffs twice. Frankly it looks like we’ll be in the mix again. Excellent manager and I hope we can enjoy a promotion with him!

Brannagan was our worst player v Cambridge and won’t let anyone tell me otherwise. Yes he can ping a top draw pass etc but he should be doing in the number 8 position. He doesn’t sense danger like a CDM should. Think Hoolahan would agree as well. Gorrin does that and without him we will always concede goals.

Disagree. I lost count of the number of times Brannagan popped up and broke up play, that was blatantly obvious if you were there. If you’re looking for our worst player in terms of what they actually had to do, look no further than Stevens; caught in possession in the first half and a series of woeful kicks in the second at a time when the game was there for the taking.

I would love to see Gorrin playing week in, week out again. When he's playing consistently there is no one better in that position. Cam Brannagan can fill in if Gorrin is to get injured/suspended. If Gorrin is due to be out for longer periods then a backup defensive midfileder is required.

We are in desperate need of fullback cover, no cover for leftback currently and I don't think Forde or Hanson are good enough at fullback to play there for a sustained period. This seems to have been the case for as long as I can remember!! BTW, I don't think we can realistically count Thorniley as leftback cover, as currently he is one of our first choice centre backs.

After taking a booking in the first half he would have been substituted for Sykes in the 60th minute. Same result.

I'll give it a go!

In any game when you are dominating, and for periods we were, you need to score goals. No sh!t Sherlock, eh! We scored one and, as everyone who has ever watched a game of football will know, going into the last part of a match at 1-0 against *anyone* is a dangerous game to play. You fall just that bit further back, invite just that bit more pressure and as often as not give up a silly goal. A penalty, a defected shot, a corner that bobbles in off someone. We have all seen it time and time again.

IMO, having Brannagan further forward makes us more dangerous, and having Gorrin as the stopper makes us more solid at the back. So - more likely to score a second and less likely to be under quite so much pressure. If that second had gone in, there's no way we wouldn't have won, probably by three or four.

Of course, if Gorrin wasn't ready due to missing pre-season then him not starting is understandable. What might be less so is to put him on the bench and then use pre-determined (and rather ineffective) substitutions when he could have come on to shore up the midfield a bit. All ifs and buts, he might have come on and make a horrible rickett due to having had little pre-season and we'd have actually lost!

As this is the transfer rumour thread, what do people think of the rumour regarding Taylor Moore coming here?
