Away Match Day Thread 02/01/2021 L1 Burton Albion v OUFC

A few decent additions to compliment the quality that we already have and we are in with a big shout..

Yes...apart from Hall. The small pitch didn't seem to suit him after all.

Good performance from Henry at last and he needs to keep that up.

Long motm.
I think you're correct on all points. Henry missed a sitter but his link up pay was excellent today. In fairness to Hall, he only had 5 mins.

That'll play.

Awesome month we've had. Now everyone can take a breather for ten days, with the core taking two weeks off. Chance to give Brannagan, Winnall and the squad players a run out against Cambridge.

And then our next four games (Covid permitting)? 19th, 17th, 18th & 21st. Chance to really push on and threaten the playoffs.

Brannagan and Winnall will be big players if they can remain fit.
We need a back up CB and a good wide man (Browne started and scored for Middlesbrough today- shame) to have a very good squad for the second half of the season.

Some of the usual suspects are particularly quiet tonight
🤭Well, I was close when I said..... “as has been said before...managerless, bottom of the table, leaky defence, haven’t won in ages......what could possibly go wrong? So..if it goes ahead....I can confidently predict a Kane Hemings hat trick with Oxford to lose 3-4 in the 98th minute of 92.”

......Hemmings scored and the game went ahead. 😉

(Seriously ....well done boys! HAPPY NEW YEAR to all at OUFC)

Also, pretty rare to score five goals but also miss two literal open goals in the same game!

I think Henry's was worse because he had time. But while I give Shodipo some sympathy because the ball was fairly fizzed at him - to clear the stands from one yard out was a feat of geometry!

Burton were truly atrocious. Possibly the slowest League One defence I’ve ever seen . (Apart from our marvellous 2000/2001 defensive offering. )

We needed to do the business though and we did this very well.

What we have now is a very fit, very hard working team with a settled back 6 . Who do the muck and nettles. This allows players to take risks further up the pitch.

Sam Long is vastly vastly improved. He is a good decision maker. In both boxes. Hats off to Ruffs for intelligent runs forward in transition, he is very difficult to mark. Rest of starting 11 put in a great shift, even Shodipo. Both QPR and Forest must be pleased how we’re bringing their players through 😫

On a downer I am sorry though, Robbie Hall is finished at this level.

Didn't expect that at all. Fair bloody play. Henry scores that sitter and I think we beat the Lincoln record - but obviously not complaining at all!

Nobody played badly but a special shout to Sam f*****g Long. SUCH brilliant attacking fullback play. It's not just the deliveries now, it's the movement, the intelligence and effectiveness of the runs forward, the energy for 90 minutes. I genuinely don't think it would be outrageous to say, based on the last few games, that he's now better than Cadden was for us last season. Three assists today, should have been four.

Burton didn't actually look that bad I didn't think. Better than Northampton and Plymouth when they actually got the ball down and started playing, certainly. Defence and midfield looked shaky at times, but equally we were playing some brilliant attacking football. I think Hasselbaink will keep them up.

Four points outside the playoffs now. Players coming into form, momentum building: we're top of the form table over the last 6 games, and fourth in the last 10 (since losing to Crewe). We won't make the autos, Hull and Lincoln are going at it too strongly, but if we can nip into the playoffs, with the momentum we have nobody would want to face us. Fingers crossed we don't get rusty in the next fortnight.
