National News The Brexit Thread 🇬🇧🇪🇺

Food shortages and making better food choices aren't the same thing. And if food prices go up due to shortages, who do you think is going to take the biggest hit from that?

Sorry food is too cheap, it`s why we have a looming health crisis.
The only foods that would become short from a supply chain perspective are those with a relatively short shelf life.
You aren`t looking at decimation of staple foods.

A forced better choice would do a lot of people a lot of good.

Yes, absolutely because over a long period of time we have lost contact with the "value" of food and its production.
Lots of people purely look at "price" rather than the wider view.
Do they care if their £2.99 sandwich "on the go" is made of UK, high welfare, low mileage chicken or imported (cheap) frozen chicken from Thailand?

We have several generations that have wanted for nothing and not cared where it comes from...... is turning that "consumerist cult" around a bad thing?

I won`t lose any sleep if there aren`t any avocado`s to be bought!

I agree, it’s why I didn’t buy that Brexiteer argument that we need less immigrants because it’s really hard to get a doctor’s appointment. Less readily available doctors appointments stop all the malingerers just going to the GP with every little sniffle. It’s a good thing!

Hopefully we will get fuel shortages. Then people will stop using their cars so much, start walking and cycling more, be healthier, the environment will be better... everyone wins!

In fact, when Brexit makes us all poorer, we will just learn to budget better, and stop wasting money on rubbish we don’t need.

Wow, the future is bright! ?

I hate to point out the obvious here. But are UK Govt (in part) preparing for the worse case scenario on customs checks in order to retain as little friction as possible if a FTA deal is not ready when the transition period ends?

Hurrah for bojo n co, getting brexit done, all those (job) opportunities....oh wait

In fairness, I think Ryanair have subsequently said their messaging was out of date and they intended to remove the line about right to live and work in the EU (but I bet those applying who don't have that right will be at a distinct disadvantage to those that do)....I mean...Kevin from Bishops Stortford.... speaks the Queens English and has the right to live in one country.....compared to Juan from Andalucia who speaks 4 languages and can take his pick of living and working in 27  :ROFLMAO:

I see what you're trying to do there.

People have a propensity to roll up at a GP with "every little sniffle" because we have "bred out" common sense and the concept of self medication.

I`m glad you realise we waste money on rubbish we don`t need. All that plastic tat from China et al is what is driving Global warming.

You can`t have an expanding, consumerist population without impacting the environment.

Can`t have it both ways...................... ;)

Sorry, that is way too simplistic. We have a health crisis because

So you think the looming health crisis is purely down to cheap food? Not down to people too lazy to cook, the proliferation of fast food, changes in lifestyle making everyone more sedentary? Advertisers pushing high sugar drinks? Cafe culture?

People too lazy to cook........... because they choose to buy cheap takeaway/microwave/processed food.
Fast food outlet`s................. again people choosing cheap, mostly imported, junk food.
High sugar drinks............ already being taxed to change peoples choices but tax them more if needs be.
People becoming more sedentary.............. their choice!

If the cheap shite people choose to cram down there necks isn`t there anymore they will have to find alternatives. Maybe eat less & better quality produce?

I wish life was that simplistic. You really think, let's pick some random fat bloke... Boris Johnson... is going to become slim if food prices go up?

You think if prices go up then the poorer members of society will be healthier as they won't be able to afford as much food?

You think that raising food prices will encourage people to eat higher quality foods?

That's the thing though, it's not a choice for those close to the bread line. Some have to buy the cheapest foods.
lets not forget that one of the few 'success' stories over the past ten years has been the stratospheric growth in the amount of foodbanks.... some people have to rely on them - whereas MPs have a daily breakfast allowance of £50o_O

It will make people think before they buy stuff that will probably end up in the bin!

Do you buy "Two for one" because it sounds cheap? Or buy one that will get eaten and not wasted?

All this food waste is coming from somewhere, driven by consumerism....... buy it because it sounds cheap..... without thinking about where it will end up.

Plenty of people live on a budget and need to make choice`s, cheapest isn`t always best.

Here we go again.............. who fed those people BEFORE foodbanks? Simple answer........... they went hungry.

And your point is? That's a good thing? That's something we ought to aspire to? Or are you trying to insinuate that those who use foodbanks are some sort freeloaders who getting overweight by topping up their diets with some freebies?
