If you read the excellent summary of our finances in Fan's View 2019/20 No.2 - Pre-season pt2 you will see that we have to sell a player each year just to keep our losses and debt management remotely manageable. This is the business model that keeps the lights on (When Tiger remembers to settle the bills that is ;)). Losing Nelson on a free was a big financial hit for us. So selling GW was somewhat of a necessity. At least he plays in a position we have some cover for. Like it or not it appears our owners are not here to throw money at the first team so being a selling club is the only way to survive.
Totally agree. But for the right price.

Selling anything for half price is never a good deal. It would actually be hiding the fact that our finances are not as good as others would have you believe. Imagine what we could have got for £4m?
Half price?
£2.5m rising quite a lot more by all accounts.
And the £4m was a like to have number by KR.
J ecpdcg that was said simply to push the price up

That depends if you believe it was £2.5m to begin with. Those in the know say it is, but then say KR is low balling it to bluff other clubs and yet somehow the local newspaper and radio station apparently know.

When you see what some other players go for, I’d say GW was easily over £3m, perhaps even £4m.

Indeed. You'd imagine there are potential benefits for the club that depend on the development of a new stadium with associated money making opportunities. Although (again taking the interview last night at face value) there is apparently no property development side to the whole project and the board members are only there to advise ST on the football and governance sides of things. Which does leave me a little confused, but that's probably just me!

£2.5 with add ons could very easily just be £2.5m, no guarantees when it's based on top flight appearances etc.

It's a case of yes, it's a good profit from his 100k signing a year ago, but we could have got a lot more in todays market. Especially from a club who would have just received a parachute payment of £40m

Jamal Lowe is on a par but with more experience and his reported fee is similar so if its £2.5m + add ons then i think that is a decent deal though still as disappointed as everyone to lose an exciting player.

Who on earth knows? How do you know we could have got more? I assume that the club have tried to get the maximum possible?
Or us rubbish negotiators another criticism of the club?

Jamal Lowe is reported to have gone to Wigan for £2.5m whilst John Marquis went to Pompey for £2m.

The large chunk that goes to Crusaders is definitely a good thing and at some point in the future, be it Whyte or another, this club will benefit the same way.

Zaki did say 'the board members etc' but iirc it was the end of a sentence that started with something like 'property deal is not the main reason the board are here'.

I think myself it was a little white fib ascending like a lark unbidden.

More generally Zaki spoke convincingly, I never believed the board as a whole were cash-strapped as such and it appears they do want to make the club sound as well as do the property deal.

Fingers crossed.

AND where the fuck is my striker!!!
